| Has anyone else noticed how many websites offer the tests about personality? Posted: 8/30/2009 6:25:46 PM | Just asking, and not a bash on the E-blah blah...based on XX number of compatability factors.
I do "get it" in a way, I'm just not that confident that it works. And "works" is relative, the admin here does post and there've been threads, the Myers-Briggs, I've taken myself, hell the Gemini female...yeah, yeah.
So here's the question, what value do you give to the predictor of taking a personality test that it would be the most compatible person for you?
I know myself, and I'm one of odder ducks that like taking those, but none that I've taken have personally given me some unknown revelation about who I am. Doesn't mean I discount them at all, many are very credible, I just don't feel or think that it's an accurate predictor of a person(s) who would get along great with you...okay maybe, but be a compatible partner.
I don't think that's predictable at all...if I would have relied on that, and sometimes I maybe should have, but I just don't think you can factor in the other X factor aspects.
I will share something I've read, and IMO it's worthy od quoting, the Rev. Billy Graham was sked this same question in an interview. I like this because I it's something I related to. The question was about compatability and his long term marriage. He said "Ruth and I have been happily incompatible for 50..some years."
I don't remember how many years they were married at that point, my own parents were happily incompatible for well over 50 years.
I don't have absolute faith, but I don't discount the tests either. It does make for at times an interesting interaction. I think at times I understand compatabile as it relates to me, then again.......ehh.
I do like the tests and take them and read them.

Of course that means that you'd have to answer the questions truthfully but if you do you can gain some pretty valuable information.

Posted: 8/30/2009 9:00:31 PM | | I only did that once at a dating site, as it was included in a bigger test that covered other things besides personality traits. It was about body type, income, and maybe some other things I have forgotten. There was a little pie chart at the end showing that I was compatible with a very tiny sliver of women. I mean, I think the sliver was 1 pixel wide and only that big because the computer screen can't display a thinner line. It was interesting so I went back and changed a few of my answers looking for what ones would make me more compatible. The two main ones aside from personality were body type and income. In fact, if I had a different body and a lot of money, my pie chart would have looked appetizing not like a symbol of abject starvation or anorexia. In the personality department I scored as some kind of freak, which should be no surprise to anyone who hasn't been able to avoid reading my posts here. Since then I lost the weight, well, most of it anyway, but my personality has only gotten more strange, and my income still goes up and down like always. I learned that as far as online dating goes, I'm toast, in a land where toast is not popular, not even when slathered with strawberry jam, or wishing it could be. I think of that pie chart sliver whenever I momentarily lapse into wistfulness. Maybe there is some sliver woman out there, and she's invisible only because she is standing sideways.

Yes. I have had that happen to me too. But from a woman's perspective. Apparently the quizzes are intended to be helpful and insightful(and CAN be). But one must be "normal" to be most successful. Odd or quirky is a harder match. And if one is PICKY on top of that. Then matching up becomes even harder!

With married men, guys with girlfriends and mulitple girlfriends on here, I don't want to pay. I do agree with the type of guys I like "The Protector". I've always dated seemingly "loud" guys(or more extroverted). Yes The Protector--a manly man is a turn on for me.
So I guess there is some truth to these tests,

For example, I test as INTJ... this is suppose to be such a small fraction of people that you would be surprised to find another in your daily roamings. I noticed in a thread that discussed the results, that a good 50% also claimed to be INTJ...
I think compatibility comes down to more than a simple test to determine the surface of a personality... it has so much more to do with how tolerant each person is of the other's quirks and oddities.
I stopped doing the tests a long time ago... now they seem more boring than amusing.

Posted: 8/31/2009 7:51:08 AM | I've found the Myer's-Briggs very helpful as a high-level filter for communication style and thinking style. I find NF and NT types make far better matches for me, but of coure that's only a starting point and there is so much more to consider. However, since NF and NT types are a small part of the population, it did help filter out a great many who would not be as compatible.
It got so that 9 out of every 10 dates I had were NF's - and they were indeed better overall matches for me than the other types. All of the good relationships I had were with NF's.

Has anyone else noticed how many websites offer the tests about personality? Yes. One would have to be a total moron not to have noticed.
A website of the sort the OP is talking about has the same problem a fashion magazine does, namely that if the women don't show up it will fail as a business. Same thing for bars, which is why they have Ladies Nights.
Women tend towards passivity and a fatalistic outlook, as well as a belief in an "inner/hidden beauty" of some sort (at least about themselves), so they tend to eat up these sorts of quizes -- calling them "tests" is a bit pretentious since no one ever crams for one, and no one ever fails, making them the ultimate in anxiety- and stress-free parlor fun for the gullible with too much time on their hands.
They're roughly the pop psychology equivalent of astrology columns, offering the simple-minded easy ways of navigating through complex terrain.
