| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 8/31/2009 3:32:14 PM | If you want some amazing brownies, just add 1 or 2 tablespoons of chili powder to your batter. It will add an amazing amount of flavor without adding heat. If you want them to be more of a spice brownie, you can also add in some ginger syrup and cinnamon. I guarantee they will awaken your taste buds!
Hope you all enjoy! | |

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 8/31/2009 3:38:32 PM | You should try cayenne pepper!! I have been making them for years add some extra virgin coconut oil and you will die.
I like the heat and the coconut oil, makes it where you can chill them in the fridge and they are still chewy and hot..and cold at the same time.
I am glad you posted this because a lot of people can't take the heat and I still like to spice it up, didn't think of chili powder. Thanks!!

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 8/31/2009 4:45:36 PM | I personally think the quality of the chili powder is the key. Plain old red, type not labelled, bottled cheap chili powder just doesn't do much.
I like smoky chipotle, or the clean spice taste of chimayo. Ancho would be better than the plain blah stuff that I think is mostly paprika.
Also, for a chocolate flavor booster, don't forget espresso strength coffee. Coffee really intesifies and mellows the flavor at the same time.
Another thing I like, is chestnuts, not the crunchy Chinese water kind, the used to be American, now called French, chestnuts roasting on a open fire, type creamy deliscious chestnut. MMMMMMM

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/1/2009 3:30:00 AM | | Speaking of brownies, a family friend used to make cinnamon brownies. The were not chocolate, but more like a blonde brownie, with lots of cinnamon. She gave me the recipe before she passed away and i've misplaced it. I've searched for the recipe and nothing has come close. Does anyone know of a recipe. She was in her 70's and said her mother used to make them. Any help would be great. | |

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/1/2009 5:03:41 AM | | I have a couple of tricks I use. Instead of chili powder I add cinnamon. And I replace all the water in any brownie mix recipe with coffee and have even been known to throws a couple of squirts of coffee syrup in the mix. It intensifies the flavor of the chocolate and adds a more adult richness. | |

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/3/2009 5:29:58 PM | | Try adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the brownies as you mix them. The batter will be slightly thicker so you may wish to add either more oil/more water/ or the contents of your favorite nip sized bottle of raspberry or cherry liquor. I have heard that lemon is great but I haven,t tried it yet.Good Luck! | |

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/5/2009 5:53:43 PM | Well I have had dk chocolate with chilis and it is the best. I am not sure about the ginger or cinnamon though hmmmmmmmm my freind makes the best brownies and what she does is instead of add ing oil or butter and then flouring the bottom of the pan so they wont stick she puts unsweetened cocoa in the bottom of the pan. This really makes the chocolate taste come through. | |

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/11/2009 11:02:20 PM | Great ideas guys! Smiling salmon, I couldn't agree with you more. The quality of ALL your ingredients will definitely make a huge difference.
As far as flavored liqueurs, I never though of using them. I can see how they would definitely boost the flavors. I'm not much of a drinker, but I guess it can't hurt to carry a little more variety. Especially if it means adding a variety of flavors to my cooking.
I've never tried dusting the bottom of the pan with Cocoa before, but isn't there a chance that it would turn out badly? I'm not sure about it so I will have to try it myself. It's just I seem to vaguely remember a childhood memory of excess cocoa powder on a cake that really ruined it for me.
And finally, I would like to thank the last poster who made it clear that "Butter" is always far superior to the "Greens" lol. I was expecting those comments and it actually made me smile to see you clarify that.
...Mmmmmmm...butter...

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/15/2009 2:40:27 PM | when my sons were little and planning a week-long camping trip with their Dad ... I'd make a large container of brownies ... added chopped walnuts to one side ... added shredded or flaked cocoanut to the other side ... with the center PLAIN! they loved 'em ...
that was a tradition I'd completely forgotten till I read this thread ...
now I just go nuts and put ALL sort of things in my brownies ... trail mix ... chocolate chips ... sliced almonds ... dried fruit ... stripes of peanut butter ... I've been asked if there were any BROWNIES in my brownies!
P.S. have never added any green stuff to my brownies!

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/16/2009 5:25:03 AM | Please...How ridiculous to think chili powder is makes brownies taste better.
there is no tradition of using chili powder in baked good in the US, American Southwest, or Mexico...
OK then, why not a Baked Alaskan with serrano peppers, Apple Pie with chipotle peppers, or Banana Foster with scotch bonnets.
give me a break. Ya'll have ruined chili con carne...now you want to ruin dessert too.

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/16/2009 10:41:19 AM | Hi there!
I came across some chili cocoa powder in a grocery store. I use that in place of regular cocoa powder. The brownies are incedible!! Talk about sweet heat!! Yum Yum!!

Butterscotch schnapps with skor toffee bits is pretty fantastic...

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/17/2009 8:29:58 PM | SA, some people just like what they like. I am that way about some stuff, but I never liked chocolate unless it was a strip of orange rind that had been dipped in unsweet dark chocolate, until I tasted chocolate with spicy or hot chile powder in it. I developed a Caribbean Spice Crinkle just because of it. SInce then I have learned that I like dark chocolate cake with strong coffee in it and I never liked cake before!
They just need to fix chocolate ice cream now. Regular stuff is so nasty.

Always make "oil" or "butter". Never thrown in the greens. It tastes awful.
I would like to thank the last poster who made it clear that "Butter" is always far superior to the "Greens" lol. I was expecting those comments and it actually made me smile to see you clarify that. Very true! In days gone by we never had greens...just "mini black brownies" that we'd crumble up and add.
I'm not much of a drinker... Not to worry...you're not drinking it...
SAguy...have you ever tried Pollo-Mole? Spicy chicken with a hint of sweet dark chocolate.
Brownies, in and of themselves, tend to be too sweet and rich so I add a large dollop of unsweetened raspberry sauce. (Crazy as it sounds...but steak and raspberries go hand in hand)

| The best flavor boost to any brownies! Posted: 9/18/2009 5:51:25 AM | One of the ingredients I've seen listed in some 'spicy' recipes (Southwestern/Tex-Mex/Mexican) is cocoa powder.
Interesting corollary to the OP's suggestion of putting chili powder into brownies. I'll have to try both sometime.
