Sore knee
Posted: 8/31/2009 6:37:51 PM
I slightly tore my MCL about 6 years ago and now the same knee has been acting up for the past 2 weeks. I didn't have surgery on it yet it hasn't caused me any pain for the last 4 years or so. Initially, I thought I must have bruised it but that I just wasn't marking. When I sit cross-legged, it feels exactly like the feeling you get when someone pushes on a fresh bruise but deep within the knee. I can't imagine it's my MCL since it's been so long but I thought I'd throw that in there just in case. Any ideas what a feeling like that could indicate?

p.s. I know I should see my doctor. I just figured I'd give it a little more time to heal before going that route and get some opinions based on personal experience/knowledge in the meantime.

Thanks!

If you have lost any range of motion then there is a chance that part of the torn ligament may have become wedged somewhere.

All of my MCL surgeries where done with a scope and for the most part just involved removal of tissue.

If the pain goes away in a week then you just bruised it, which could have been caused by the knee shifting under load and with part of the ligament no longer there, it increases the range of movement in the knee and that can cause temporary pain.

The only way you are going to find out for sure is MRI or scope.

MRI or scope...lovely. My range of motion is still there. It's just a little tender when I "straighten" my leg out too far (double jointed) or cross my legs. Do you mean a week total or a week from today (three weeks total)?

Is the knee still sore even after doing some good warm ups before getting out of bed in the morning? I never cross my legs and have to be careful I dont sit for to long or my right knee which I messed up, gets really stiff and sore.

If you have insurance or can afford it then please see your doctor or a sports med doctor which I think would be better, because there may be a simple solution we dont know of. Or....by doing surgery sooner than later you may be preventing a much bigger problem.

I'm Canadian so our health care is covered by the government (well, taxes). I just don't like going to the doctor unless it seems like a serious problem. As for surgery, I hope it doesn't come to that. I was a wrestler and in the middle of university exams when it first happened so I didn't want to take all the down-time associated with surgery. I was doing rehab initially but it was really time-consuming so I stopped going. Not the brightest of ideas. Nonetheless, it seemed to go away with progressive weight training so I thought I was in the clear. Shucks.

As for warm-ups, what kind of things do you do? I've never warmed up before getting out of bed or had problems sitting cross-legged. I'm a primary teacher, so I'm accustomed to sitting cross-legged with the munchkins for hours each day without a problem. That's why this is so strange.

Obviously going to the doctor will be the best way to get an answer for your knee. I have injured both of my knees in my teen years, many, many years ago. I can cross my right leg over my left knee with out a problem. However, when I cross my left knee over my right leg I get a sharp pain in the knee. Like you said it is deep in the knee. I describe it like a long needle going through the knee. An old timer suggested it was arthritis. Dunno. It does act up with the weather changes and I also have problems in the knuckle of the right index finger. When I finally get to the docs again I will have to mention it to him

I finally dragged myself to the doctor after 4 weeks of little to no improvement. It turns out I sprained my MCL again. Lovely. He said that I should start doing weight training to build up my quadriceps but I forgot to ask him how long I should wait before starting that. Any idea?

Go to a reputable bike store and have them fit you for a bike.

Ride said bike until you can not ride any more.

Repeat as often as possible.

I was riding 2 months after both of my ACL surgeries and with in 1 week of MCL surgeries.

Just use pain as your guide.

It is important to be fitted properly for the bike though, so you do not do any more damage to the knee.

I loaned someone my bike but I'll see about getting it back. We'll see how that goes. You would recommend starting even while the pain is still there?

Yep, as long as the pain is only a discomfort and not anything that would inhibit your ability to preform the activity at a moderate level.

If you have never been properly fitted for your bike make sure you have that done.

Couple of key things with the bike is to make sure that-

Seat Height - (Slide your foot forward and put your heel on centre of peddle. You should be able to have peddle at lowest position without having to rock to the side to extend leg, Check both sides as many of us have one leg a bit shorter than other.)

Seat Position (front to back) - (With peddle in 3 OClock position and your foot properly placed on peddle you should be able to drop a plum-bob from the front of your knee and it should not fall ahead of your toes. You are aiming for it to line up with the ball of your foot.)

That said I am no Dr., I am just going by hat worked for me, so for the best advice you should really speak with a Kinesiologist or Physiotherapist.

...What on earth is a plum blob...

1 - A plumb-bob or a plummet is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, that is suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line.

This way you can make sure that your knee is not going out past your toes when you are peddling.

Can't I just use my eyes?

You could try.

Only problem could be.

You need to be on bike in normal peddling position (foot at 3 O'Clock) and then be able to see if your knee is ahead of your foot without moving from that position.

Flax oil is good for muscle repair and for the joints. You should try taking an ice bath, it can help with getting oxygen to the damaged tissue.

Ice baths...brrrrr. I promised myself I'd never take one after quitting wrestling. I plan on staying true to that promise.

Good news. My knee is already starting to feel better! I don't want to stress it but ever since I found out I sprained it again I've been taking much better care of it and I'm definitely seeing improvement. Yay!

Well, I'm off to the gym for the first time in about 6 or 7 weeks. Wish me luck...I'll take it relatively light but I may need it nonetheless.
