| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 11:23:54 AM | I have just been watching the news and one item was about a pub in Newcastle that has banned the use of mobile phones.
I suppose banned is to stronger word, although they ask that you go outside to make or receive call so as the rest of the customers dont have to listen to your conversation especially when meals are being served.
I know some fellas may find this handy when the wife or girlfriend may be trying to contact them when they are out with the lad's, but would you take offence if you were asked to go outside to make or receive a mobile call.
Seems those that frequent this establishment dont seem to mind and along with the drink it is going down well.

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 11:29:27 AM | Unless it's an emergency, I rarely take calls in company anyway, and if I do, I keep it brief.
I dated a girl who would often have 30 minute conversations whilst we were out. I walked out and left her in a pub once because of it, she was SO angry, but I explained (this was after 3 20 min plus calls) that perhaps she should be out with those people if she was so desperate to talk to them.
she didn't do it again. | |

I hate having to listen to women whinging down the phone while i'm having a pint with their man, send 'em packing!

"mobiles are anti-social and rude"
Behavior is anti-social and rude. Mobile phones are just a tool. They can be used politely, but loud obnoxious jerks choose not to. If someone is being a loud obnoxious jerk, of course they should be asked to go outside (and not come back in)... blaming the phone is treating the symptoms, not the root cause.

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 11:53:41 AM | | I'd support banning them, never take mine with me when I'm out socially, not that I don't want to talk to people, just want a bit of bloody time to myself and whoever I'm with without interuptions. | |

Then it's not a 'ban', is it?
The landlord is merely requesting people to go outside when making or receiving calls. It's perfectly acceptable to have the mobile switched on whilst in the pub, and to receive calls.
My local doesn't need to ask its customers - they all seem to go outside anyway when on the mobile.

Pub ban's Mobile Phones
No i dont mind at all, good idea!!!!!!!!!!
Can they ban kids as well i dislike kids in pubs horried thing to do take little ones in a pubs...............................
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 12:06:07 PM | I think the ban/restriction is a good idea. I carry my mobile when I am out but keep it on silent. I hate it when your sitting having a meal or a drink and there are half a dozen different ring tones going on around about.
I would check the phone if I was expecting a specific call ie from someone else who was meant to be meeting the company and hadn't turned up. I can also understand some people keeping their phones handy ie just in case a babysitter needed to contact you.
Whatever the reason, I would always take or make a call outside or in a hallway because I wouldn't want everyone hearing my conversation and pubs tend to be a bit noisy so you do have to speak louder than normal.
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 12:18:00 PM | Most of the locals where I drink take their calls outside as a matter of common courtesy and as has already been mentioned, privacy.
A particularly noisy half-wit came wandering in the pub one night, mobile jammed to his ear, bellowing about hanging on for the au-pair and not to forget the £500 in loose notes from his bedside table, he was doing really well until the phone started ringing in his hand!

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 12:25:15 PM | Sitting next to someone and they're texting or reading texts...Bloody rude....Banning THWM is good asn they are rude...
But I want one of those big huge ones with a car battery and ye have to shout very loudly....suit me...Shouldn't ban them ones...

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 12:28:10 PM | We don't do quiet pubs up here in Newcastl so I don't know how anyone ever hears a phone ringing never mind being able to hear what the caller is saying | |
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 12:49:13 PM | This instance isnt a ban no, but I think a fully blown conversation in a quiet place is bad manners if you are in company..
There are places that ban mobiles absolutely of course. I mean other than airplanes
My workplace has banned mobile phone, cameras, video camera... in fact any device that can save an image... walkman and other mobile audio devices are banned also...
Bans of this type are common these days, and I cant blame them, it seems to me its only good manners to go out or into a place more suited to a conversation.

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 12:52:24 PM | My workplace has banned mobile phone
We have been quite sly with this............we have not banned phones at all. But for health and safety reasons, it is a requirement to go to a 'phone point' to make or receive a call It certainly stops people standing there texting all bloody day!
............ ,,,,,,,,,,,,
Here's some commas and full stops. Just in case your keyboard doesn't have them, just cut and paste and put them wherever you like.

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 1:12:45 PM | would you take offence if you were asked to go outside to make or receive a mobile call.
I'd go outside anyway to make or receive a call so wouldn't take any offence if asked.
If I was in the pub watching west Ham thrash say Arsenal 5-0 I'd probably not hear my phone ringing!
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 1:25:38 PM | There is a pub here that serves excellent food and has had mobile phones banned for the past 5 years.
Its a favourite of mine because of this.
Nothing new here. | |

I suppose banned is to stronger word, although they ask that you go outside to make or receive call so as the rest of the customers dont have to listen to your conversation especially when meals are being served. So is it offensive to have a conversation with your dining companion during the meal? I do feel it is rude to your companion if you decide to have an entire conversation with someone on telephone but it seems strange that the conversion would offend other patrons (unless of course the phonecall is with someone on a sex chat line).
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/1/2009 11:13:04 PM | | Can we ban them at concerts too please, there are so many phones held up to take pics that sometimes you can't see the performers? | |
|

| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/2/2009 1:11:51 AM | | Pubs - there's always so much chat and banter and laughter in my local I hardly think anyone notices mobile phone conversations. What a lot of old grumps. | |
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/2/2009 2:49:53 AM | | Im not fussed either way, but I went out with a girlfriend for dinner once and she spent the entire evening texting her boyfriend! thought it was rude and told her so. | |
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/2/2009 4:37:06 AM | | I reckon it's because the owners are Russian spies that want to stop the James Bond types finding where the stolen plutonium is hidden (using their mobile phones that are also geiger counters, corkscrews, inflatable rafts etc.) | |
|
| Pub ban's Mobile Phones Posted: 9/2/2009 4:50:32 AM | i think they should be banned There is nothing worse than sitting opposite a guy and he is answering a few calls from his mates meeting them after meeting me it shows not enough effort on his behalf as well as other things i'll walk out on the next person that does that to me and leave him sitting there
If the tables were turned and i had met up with him and my mate had phoned me a few times arranging to meet me nearby after are meet up with him i wonder if he would like it.. me thinks not..
