FOR every woman expecting the earth to move, there are two with more practical motives. From relieving boredom, to keeping the peace or curing a headache, women have sex for many reasons but romance and passion come rather low on the list, a new book has revealed.

One woman even admitted to having sex just so her husband would put the rubbish out.

"Research has shown most men find most women at least somewhat sexually attractive, whereas most women do not find most men sexually attractive at all," Why Women Have Sex authors Cindy Meston and David Buss said.

Having apparently discounted physical attraction, the 1000 women interviewed by the Texas University professors gave a huge range of reasons for sleeping with a man.
One said she did it for a spiritual experience, proclaiming: "It's the closest thing to God."
[BiggShoulders comment: maybe thats why she kept screaming His name ...]

But mostly the explanations were far more mundane, with 84 per cent admitting to having sex just to ensure a quiet life or to bargain for household chores. One woman said: "I have sex to relieve the boredom because it's easier than fighting. Plus it gives me something to do."
[BiggShoulders comment: I guess there was nothing good on tv that night ...]

While it may not come as welcome news, some women have sex out of sympathy, with one admitting: "I slept with a couple of guys because I felt sorry for them."
[BiggShoulders comment: pity sex ? yes please ! :D ]

Is this a usa study ..op?.. cause it is irrelevant to aussie studies/sex lives..statistics..
as would be a british study...

maybe in the international forum you.. could find out if usa woman agree with this study about them or not.....
although on usa sitcoms.. and in international forums.. I noticed a completely different attitude towards relationship/sex...
then ive ever seen in an aussie woman..
perhaps you could find an aussie study.. ... more applicable.. if you would like to guage aussie womans attitudes towards sex.. bargaining etc..

Good point Soulmate, and more specifically...

Texas University professors

Far be it for me to comment on how sexy and attractive men are, but I've seen and heard Texan men, and well um, George Bush was one for a start.

Well I'm fooked then, cos I'm looking for a woman to do my housework in exchange for sex...have even got a uniform for her.

This news article is nothing more than a titillating précis of a 307 page book called:

Why Women Have Sex: Understanding Sexual Motivations from Adventure to Revenge (and Everything in Between)

The quotes in question seem to have been selected to generate interest in the book and appear to be the responses of young women collage students; which explains a lot in itself.

The book is about Evolutionary Psychology about the evolution of the human mind. Evolutionary psychology is also a field of study in which the leading academics are as likely to be women as men, which to my mind certainly does reduce the chance that they are talking complete nonsense.

The authors Cindy Meston and David Buss are of course evolutionary psychologists of no small distinction so it is probable an excellent book which is no doubt full of statistics which is bound to increase its appeal.

Unfortunately I can’t give you a more substantial précis of what the book actually says because the first chapter is about what women find attractive about men and I am a bit disappointed to find that I don’t seem to be getting a mention anywhere. It’s a bloody long list for god’s sake there must be something, shined shoes.

What, ??!! Women arent supposed to be having sex for the pure enjoyment of it?? WHOOPS!!! ( must be those darn male tendencies!! )
Suppose I should start to work out some sort of bargaining strategies then... just in case I get the chance to experience sex again... best to do it right for once!!! ( according to the studies)

^^^ I've been wondering where you have been hiding Scuzzy

I actually also read this article in yesterdays Herald Sun (containing the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth as always....hahaha)

It claims that most women are not actually attracted to men at all sexually.....

When was the last time those fvckers got some?

Perhaps the only people to respond to "why women have sex" are the bitter ones who either
a) Aren't having some themselves and are pretending not to care
b) Are married to selfish pigs who's idea of an exciting sexual rendevous is to PRETEND to try different positions other than the old hat missionary (not dissing missionary, but give the "folding deck chair" a go)

To females credit though, they do a good job with the material they're given to work with in us blokes... I would find it kind of hard to be sexually attracted to something that looks like an Anteater being squashed between a two glaciers..... hahaha Scrat's (the squirrel thinggy from Ice Age) bug eyes come to mind now.... How fitting

I have been reading these forums for a while however have never put my two cents in before.

My situation, 3 years separated and never going back, just not divorced for financial reasons.

For the 23 years of my marriage my husband never once satisfied me so sex was a chore.

I have had a part time lover for a number of years now who I would more than happily have sex with every day. Its just that good.

That has probably finished now but i have to say guys, if she isn't enjoying it then there is simply something wrong with either the chemistry or what you are doing.

Me, Every day would be awesome with the right person !

good point, I was misled by the fact it was reported in an Australian newspaper.

nvm, the specific statistics may be different here; but more the reason to discuss the disparity and why ....

Well, throwing my 2 cents in the ring. There was a segment on channel 9's TODAY programme yesterday discussing this very topic, and the studies that were shown are very similar to what you have said here, so not sure where the studies came from for the programme.

Sex is a very personal thing, and it does take two to do the job, however good communication and a willingness to explore and experiment is something that both sexes need to have. It is what keeps things interesting.

Oh, and studies overseas are not that different to those done here. I think I am a normal person, but well when speaking with girlfriends on this subject I am a bit wild for them, go figure. And from what I have seen of the porn industry, australian women are dragging the chain a bit. But then again each to their own.

I have been married twice and the sex was great till the kids came along! In my case at any rate, no help at all from either of them. The 2nd one even referred to it as BABYSITTING on the odd occasion he did have them by hinself. Ok, so I'm a slow learner but exhaustion and resentment slowly build to a point where I think I subconsiously used sex in a passive agressive way. No good for either of us. Cathy Lette says " No wife has ever killed her husband whilst he was driving a vacuum cleaner" Now I'm old and feeble I have an "arrangement" with someone I care deeply for, best sex I ever had and no cooking or housework! Met him here on POF girls I am in no way inferring that any of the wonderful posters on here would ever treat women that way.... does that get me off the hook?

Perhaps the creators of the survey should have a bit of a look at the "weird places you've had sex" thread on here and THEN try and tell us that women only do it to get chores done.......

I almost choked on my tea that morning cos she really was old school prim and proper but I have to say it is one helluva sound bit of advice.

In the spirit of this study, I think they missed a few reasons women have sex...
* because they didn't have the rent money this week.
* to stop husband noticing credit card statement
* to keep warm in winter
* it's cheaper than body scrub and helps slough off dead skin cells
* in order to have something decent to post on the 'weirdest places you've had sex' thread

Edit:

but more the reason to discuss the disparity and why ....

Hmmm...Sounds like a good way to get women to talk about sex...maybe beat their chest a bit about how hot to trot they are to prove the study wrong...give some examples from their sex life perhaps. All for purely scientific purposes, of course.

The reality is.. every society....culture...race....religion...etc.. does.. have different views..etc on things such as sex...
and part of anthropology.. Is exploring these differences...culturally.. just because usa/aussie/british appear to be white western societies.. studies would reflect different attitudes.. to things such as sex.. for eg..
Op.. my point.. was simply to point out.. these statistics/study need to be questioned... (intent/motive of study..demagraph etc..).. because some people will simply see/read something.. and believe it is true...... and also aussies are unique.. and its important to keep our social...culture....

If you believe what you read, Australians are a sexy lot. We have sex at a younger age and with more partners than our parents, and if we had our way, we'd like to do it more often. But how do we know all this, and what does it mean? Jacquie van Santen investigates.

Studying sexual behaviour and attitudes has interested us since the times of the ancient Greece.
The study of sexual behaviour and attitudes has fascinated society; in fact, attempts at a rational and systemic study of human sexual behaviour date back at least to the ancient Greeks.

According to The Birth of Sexology: A Brief History in Documents, the legitimate forefathers of sex research are physicians like Hippocrates and the philosophers Plato and Aristotle, who made extensive observations and offered the first elaborate theories regarding sexual responses and dysfunctions, reproduction and contraception, abortion, sex legislation and sexual ethics.

Landmark sex surveys
In modern times, Dr Alfred Kinsey's landmark sex surveys in the late 1940s and early 1950s sparked a revolution in social awareness of human sexuality.

Kinsey went where no other researcher had been before, probing the sex lives of more than 10,000 men and women. Using in-depth, face-to-face interviews, Kinsey and colleagues asked each individual an average of 300 questions about their experiences of masturbation, petting, intercourse, martial histories, sexual outlets and homosexual relationships.

His research provided a fascinating snapshot of what people were doing behind closed doors. After all, at that time, sex was hardly something one discussed at the dinner table.

We learnt, for example, that a fifth of males had first intercourse by the time they were 16 years old, married women were having sex 2.2 times a week by the age of 30, foreplay lasted between 4-10 minutes for around a third of couples, 40% of males preferred making love in the light and 47.5% of men ejaculated less than five minutes after sex began.

(Kinsey speculated that for perhaps three-fourths of all males, orgasm was reached within two minutes after initiation of coitus, and reported this as a frequent source of marital conflict).

It was in this climate that Masters and Johnson began their research into sexuality and intimacy. Together they developed polygraph-like instruments that were designed to measure human sexual response. Using these tools, Masters and Johnson initiated a research project that culminated in 700 men and women being observed under laboratory conditions while they had sex or masturbated.

Today, research into sexuality and sexual behaviour is regular media fodder.

Condom manufacturers have a vested interest in conducting research into sexual behaviours which generate alot of media fascination.
We have condom manufacturers giving us the low down on the average penis size, and research comparing Australia's sexual prowess against the rest of the world.

Did you know, for example, that Aussies are average when it comes to bed action, ranking equal 16th in an international 'league' table on the number of sexual liaisons per person per year? And that Australia leads the world in the frequency of sex in the park? And that the average length of the erect penis is 14.928 centimetres? (The latter was discovered in a Mexican nightclub. More than 400 partygoers were ushered into private tents and had their privates measured by a team of doctors. Perhaps not surprisingly, only 300 were able to gain an erection for measurement.)

Aussie's start earlier than their parents did
Closer to home, the Australian Study of Health and Relationships - Australia's first large-scale national survey of sexual behaviour and attitudes - found that Australians are having sex at a younger age and with more partners than their parents.

More than 19,000 Aussies aged 16 to 59 years were questioned over the telephone about their sexual experiences, relationships, use of condoms and contraception, sexual satisfaction and difficulties and sexual attitudes and knowledge of sexual transmitted infections.

Researchers from La Trobe University, The University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales reported that more than three quarters of those surveyed believed that sex before marriage was acceptable.

An Australian Study of Health and Relationships found that Australians are having sex at a younger age and with more partners than their parents.
Heterosexual couples who had been together for at least a year reported they had sex on average 1.84 times a week - but most wanted more. (Interestingly, while 85% of respondents said they would like sex at least twice a week, only 27% actually had sex this often).

Lead author Dr Anthony Smith from La Trobe University's Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society said the study also revealed that vaginal intercourse was by far the most common sexual practice and most (95% men and 79% women) people had an orgasm last time they had sex.

"Nevertheless, it was interesting to find that the majority of those with sexual partners had experienced some sort of sexual difficulty in the last year lasting for at least a month. These ranged from lack of interest in sex, difficulty with erection, pain during intercourse or difficulty reaching orgasm," Smith said.

What it all means - and does it really matter?
At the end of the day, however, when you gather up the vast body of international data into sexual habits and behaviour - some of it little more than 'fun' research carried out by private companies with vested commercial interests - it begs the question of how much is truth and how much wishful thinking? Do people really do it as often, and as well, as they claim they do? And if people aren't keeping up with the Jones' does that mean they're sexual failures?

Well, no, according to Dr Edith Weisberg, director of research at FPA Health, Sydney, who says some research may not represent the average couple, "because it's done on couples who are obviously sexually active and sexually confident."

Weisberg maintains that 'viva la difference' is the key for most couples.

"…My concern about it all is that it is setting all sorts of standards of what people should and shouldn't be doing and I guess I feel that what suits a couple - as long as it suits both of them - is the norm for that couple."

"I don't see that measuring it against what the 'average' is achieves anything at all. It just makes people anxious."

Now as you can see.. usa started alot of studies.. which helped put such things out in the open... so this research.. includes.. usa studies from early on.. then moves forward to aussie studies..
things such as the penis measurements.. might cause.. anxiety.//concern for some males.. and to me.. I would'nt take as accurate.. so I would'nt if I was male be affected/concerned about such statistics..
also..young'un.... the woman attracted to males.. thing.. Is more complex than how the bait and tackle looks
so please don'y buy that bullshite.. from the study either...
perhaps.. at another time .. I might TACKLE that aspect...ha ha ha..

So if some women trade sex for getting the chores done, then I will have to brag that I can do the following;
cook,
do the washing up,
clean the house,
wash clothes,
hang the clothes on the line,
clean up the yard,
mow the yard,
take the rubbish to the bin,
take rubbish to the tip,
do the shopping,
do the ironing as well as work a 38 hour week.

Now I know why I am not getting any sex, I am too bloody tired to meet any women who can lighten my work load.
