facebook whats the deal?
Posted: 9/9/2009 7:34:04 AM
To some facebook is a bible, but what i dont get is why people add anyone whos name they happen to remember as a friend? fair enough if they are your actual friends, people you liked from school or family. Why do people add those they didnt like at school or never even spoke to while they were there? or who happened to bully them perhaps nicking their dinner money off them etc?

Then comes the point of "wall posts" typically very banal and pointless statements

omg ive just woken up !!

im having such and such for dinner!!!

kids are doing my head in please help

im having a great evening or holiday!!! i wonder why if it was so great that you decided to come on facebook?

By the way i have a facebook account, i wanted to see what the fuss was about and the above is what i have seen. I really dont get it all.

When all is said and done, facebook is a networking site and it's all for fun.
I have people on my friends list who I went to school with who I didn't really get on well with at school, but the way I see it, is that we were kids and I don't see the point in holding grudges. We're all adults now, some are married with kids and for the most part, we're a lot more mature. I deleted one girl from my facebook after she obviously hadn't left her playground ways in the playground. It was simple, I just deleted her.

Sometimes, people like to just let people know about what's going on in their lives and I don't see anything wrong with that. The only thing that annoys me is when someone changes their status about 10 times an hour. That's frustrating but for the most part, I like reading peoples status's, it lets me know how they are doing.

I think you should enjoy facebook for what it is, just a bit of fun! There are settings in which you can control what you see, so it's not as if you can't change it.

For most, it's a great way of keeping in touch with friends and family all over the world!

OK, I'm sad...I must be to stick around on PoF.

But I'm never going to reduce myself to the level of being on Facebook...I have too much dignity, honour and self-respect!

While some people use facebook to collect as many friends as possible and write pointless messages, you can use it any way you want, you can delete your wall and all those silly applications and you don't have to tell everyone what you had for dinner!

I use it to keep in touch with friends - some old school friends that I'm glad to get back in touch with and some that live in other countries who I wouldn't otherwise have much contact with. Its a great way of doing that.

I like using Facebook, but every so often I have a clear-out of 'friends' I never speak to or interact with through Facebook.

I don't mind the 'pointless' messages - you don't have to respond to them, nor post them.

One friend of mine always gets his friends 'talking' on his status threads - some really varied discussions have come out of it.

And all the applications are just for fun!

You can use Facebook to your own advantage and in any way you choose.

I like Facebook.
Once you get rid of most of the applications, it's actually a good place to keep in touch with friends and family...and it's so cute to be found by some long lost school friend; it really is.

I dont understand why people have 250+ friends on facebook. Do you realy know that many people. It all about collecting. Look at me, ive more friends than you

I have about 48 friends, of those, I know (school / work / social) about 44 of them.

I only have 27 they are people i know and actually like. I can't for the life of me understand why somebody has 250+ friends on facebook. Friends for me are people you socialise with or talk to on a regular basis if somebody has that many you can guarantee they rarely or ever talk to most of them so whats the point?

I always thought that facebook would be a complete waste of time.

I was asked by a friend from pof if I wanted to join, so I completed a basic profile in July 2008, and went no further. I was in a relationship, and I didn't feel I needed to keep in touch with anyone else.

However, I've recently resurrected it, and have it to be an excellent way of keeping in touch with friends and letting them know what I'm up to. I've uploaded pix and a video, I caught up with people from my previous life (hi, Rachel!) and I'm enjoying using it.

I've limited my access to 'friends of friends', and I really enjoy having stuff appear on my wall....

I love it, its great to chat to all your mates, make mass plans, let everyone know whats going on, and lets face it there are some posters on here who talk about their personal life in great detail !

At least on there you can limit who see's your stuff, mine is friends only, so if you aint on the list you don't know nowt ..

I like the random rants, meeting and talking to people all over the world, the photography groups are brill with cc's to help you improve and tell you how to improve, I have learned so much, for free and enjoy the competitions..

There are groups for every sport, or interest ..

It's real if your carefull who you allow on to your profile, and the fakes do not last 5 minutes, soooooooo easy to spot ...

Abuse gets reported and dealt with, not as fast as on here, but its monitored 24/7...

If you don't like it fine, but do not be ignorant enough to dismiss something you have not tried..

I love facebook

I use it to stay in touch with scattered family and friends, people I grew up with as kids, people I used to work with.

It's a great way to see what everyone is doing, what they look like, keep up with new additions to families etc

I like Facebook too. I have people from all over the world on mine including President Obama, I play Scrabble with a multitude of people for every corner of the globe, am a member of the Facebook Wrinklies who organise great nights out and visits to places of interest and picnics and such like and the dating parts of it are far better than here on POF in my opinion. It's a great way to stay in touch with family and friends, share pictures and other info and a great place to make new friends too. Oh yes, and no-one thinks your a slapper for having hundreds of favourites either

Facebook is, like most websites (including this one) just what you make of it.

I keep in touch with friends who dont live nearby (it's free, unlike phonecalls), I share photo's with my friends (which I probably wouldn't see, or wouldnt print to show people), I organise a lot of my social life, I laugh at some of the status updates my friends post, and I thoroughly enjoy it.

The privacy issues have now all been sorted. I don't share anything with anyone except my friends, I don't use all the applications, and I don't have people on my 'friends' list who I don't know or don't want.

What's not to like?

I love Facebook!

I have many friends all over the world, which means Facebook is fantastic for keeping in touch with them all. I have found a few friends on facebook that I lost contact with over the years too. So to be chatting again, is great.

I wouldn't be without it to be honest. Sad probably, but nevermind-I'm happy! :-D

I love being on face book and up until a few months ago I couldn't have recalled many thoughts or faces from my school days. After joining up it's like i've been given a lot of memories back, I even met up with some old school friends on a recent trip back up to my home town.

I do find the games addictive though which is a little worrying lol.

I also have over a 100 friends on my lists but a vast majority of them are family and it's a great way to stay in touch!!

I only have family and close friends on Facebook and use it to keep track of their lives. My security settings are high, so there's little danger of anyone finding their way onto my friends list unless I want them to be there.

I do agree with your point about the banal and pointless statements, though. I also wonder at some of the intimate statements, too!

I'm on Facebook, I've got about 45 "friends" . I do believe its pretty stupid to have lots of friends on your friends list who you don't know. The people who added me, who I went to school with at least I had seen them and spoken to them at school.

Some people have add me from Groups which I use, but I have seen them on their before and I don't add anybody who lives in one of those odd countries.

You don't have to see anything your friends are saying if you don't what too.

Only down site to Facebook is that they are too many idiots on it

I have a facebook account, it is about 2 weeks old now, I got it because my children are on there and I like to know what they are doing, but I have to admit, I have found family loads of them... It has worked for us!

But it is bloody werid, I get messages from people, but we did not get on at school?? Also people sending me messages who I dont know, because they know my family... Now what is that about???

But all in all, I do like it, I feel my gilrs are safe on there, as we can all see their messages...

An old boyfriend found me on face book and we are in contact all the time now. Some memories just make me smile soooooooo much!
I work away from home and I like the fact that I can keep up with what everyone is up to on face book. It's faster, quicker and cheaper than many long, long distance phone calls.

Cherie, you do know that there is a private messaging system on there too, don't you? x

On Topic:
I get the odd person who I don't know putting in a friend request, but I just ignore them.

i just have friends, family and freinds from work on there

i like the farm games too,im a complete addict

i too dont understand having people on there just becasue you happen to know them for some reason, one guy from work puts a post up about his day or life, and people on his freinds list are really quite nasty to him, really take the piss,i often read it and think christ why have you got these people on your page,he never gives me an amswer when i ask that tho so he must enjoy the attention even though it is negative
