So many posters appear to be squarely against it. what were your experiences that lead to your views? I've my own, but I'm curious about the rest of you. What makes this such a no-no? Is it worse in your views than alcohol? Many states and cities have decriminalized it citing a poor enforcement record and imprudent use of police resources.

Okay I do have one issue with it, I would not want to date someone that was always stoned but I always would not want to date someone who was always drunk.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 3:16:49 PM | My issue is this .... I actually think Im so GREAT and such FANTASTIC company that no one should need to be stoned or drunk to enjoy being with me.
If someone needs a crutch when with me, then in all honesty they just aren't that interested are they?! If someone has to get stoned before or during a date, then they are having a better longterm relationship with their drugs then they will ever have with a real person.

Trying to derive some deeper meaning about it is a fool's errand.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 3:55:04 PM | Grew up with it in the home. My father and all my brothers were or are pot smokers.
They (they being pot smokers) always say that its harmless but I've seen otherwise. I can tolerate and even have participated in smoking pot every couple of months (more like every couple of years in my case) but seeing people who smoke joints the way someone would smoke cigarettes just disgusts me and I've made it my choice in life to make sure those kind of people aren't in my life.

Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Because people are people. It's prevalent that being "racist" is wrong, so let's ostracize the pot smokers instead. That's still okay.
What are your issues with it? It smells bad, has always lead to peer pressure in my experience with it, and it's either I judge them for smoking pot or I get judged for not smoking pot.
and why? No positive experiences with people that blatantly smoke pot and want to force me to accept their pot "lifestyle." People that just do it, privately, and I don't know about it because they haven't made it a crusade in their life I have no problem with. As they keep it to themselves, and it doesn't affect me.
what were your experiences that lead to your views? Finding roommates that advertised as non smokers, but didn't include pot until after the lease is signed. Lived above a state trooper, so windows were always closed, my clothes always smelled like pot. The apartment always smelled like pot. I always smelled like pot. Constantly worried "the man" downstairs would arrest me as an accessory or something.
Friends that smoked pot and thought it was a great idea not to bathe...ever, because they read that dirt clogged pores would keep the chemicals in and lead to a bigger high.
Too many "oh dude, I forgot to pick you up, forgot it was rent day, forgot to give you the message about cancer from your doctor, I'll catch you next week."
Too many "Oh dude, I ate your food for the week that you can't afford more of. I'll buy you a pizza tomorrow man..."
Too many public service announcements that annoy the hell out of me.
Too much shoving it in my face and judging that there is something wrong with me because I really don't have the desire to participate.
Is it worse in your views than alcohol? I think alcohol is just as bad. I think people abuse pot more than alcohol, it just doesn't lead to as many deaths. But people on too much of either are just as annoying.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 4:21:05 PM | | I don't have a problem with recreational use i.e. vacation, the weekend or whilst reading a good book and sipping port (1-3 joints a week). I don't think it is any worse than me smoking cigs. However, if the other person is a total burnout, lacky, no job having, living at home with mama, putting pot before bills deadbeat then we have a problem. We all have quirks and different ways of relaxing, but when you but a vice before everything else you have a problem. | |

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 4:25:38 PM | having smoked when i was younger, i just don't get what the freakin fascination is.
like it or not, some of us grew up and choose to handle life without mind altering crap and some of us grew up physically but are still stuck in our teenage and younger years.
and for those that that depend on it and don't want to grow older or just plain old without it, i feel bad for you.
it's something that you and/or society tells you not to do and if you do, you get in trouble but you can't do without it yourself, what's up with that.
and when our kids get into it, get caught and arrested we yell at them, ground them and preach how it's a drug blah, blah, blah but yet it's ok for us to have a double standard and use it ourselves.
how about the parents that provide and smoke it with their kids. wow, that's great parenting at its best.
for myself, no matter how bad life can get and at times it can get pretty bad, i never felt i needed it to help me feel better.
i like being grown up and sober...i like not smelling bad and i especially like living life with a clear mind.
i also enjoy the fact that i'm a responsible person and parent even though my kids are all grown and that i have a clean record, have never been arrested and don't have to worry or look over my shoulder because i have to smoke freakin dope...
only loosers do drugs may they be mild or the strongest crap out there.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 4:46:17 PM | | I have an 18 year old son that has smoked regularly for aproximately 5 years. Before the pot he had ambitions and goals and valued education. Now he is just wasted all the time. It seems his brain has turned to mush. Has absolutely no goals and dropped out of school only a few months before graduation. All he talks about is getting high and how pot has made him philosophical and "deep", but he talks about the dumbest things I've ever heard (basically made up stuff). Thrown out of school twice, pulled over by police (within 6 months of getting his license) with pot in the car. It has been a nightmare to say the least. I'm done! | |

I realize this is an old and discarded idea, but, how about papa opening a little can of kick ass with that boy ?
His real father is out of state and not in the picture. There have been a few altercations with my x and my son over the pot. Nothing worked, trust me we did it all....right down to taking the door off the hinges. My son cared so little that he would just be naked and say things like "well you wouldn't have to see me naked if you didn't take the door down". I'm pretty sure that there is nothing we didn't do short of sending him off somewhere for others to put up with him.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 6:34:43 PM | At one point, alcohol was illegal. California has approved marijuana for medicinal use. Countries such as Canada do not have strict regulations on possession. I think a lot of people on POF want to look "good" so they deny smoking marijuana and espouse all of its evils. If you compare marijuana use to alcohol- marijuana is the better choice every day. Alcoholics are some of the most violent, deadly and harmful people out there. They rip apart families and kill innocent people while drunk driving. What are most pot smokers like? The ones I know are mostly young,...hippie type or hip hop type. Just trying to chill out and enjoy music, concerts, food, love and life. I think if some of the naysayers on here got high once or twice they might slow their roll and chill the f out. Damn....one love. | |

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 6:40:22 PM | I'm a school teacher. I would be a hypocrite to approve of it while telling the children not to do it. Also, a lot of drug laws are federal, so cities and states can decriminalize all they want, but it's still illegal.
I agree that we should legalize it and tax the hell out of it, but I don't need it in my life.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 6:40:59 PM | | People who blindly insist on stigmatizing pot users (and I'm NOT talking about abusers) are still hypnotized by Reefer Madness. Get a life people. Abuse of any substance is not good regardless of what it is. I really wonder if the most vocal anti-pot posters have ever (a) used it and (b) don't get upset about a little wine with dinner...just to take the edge off 'ya understand. | |

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 6:57:50 PM | I think it should be legal, frankly.
However, now it isn't, and pot smokers do therefore live in a culture of being afraid of the knock on the door. Plus, there's the fact that they commonly deal with criminals to get it.
Also, in my experience, pot smokers become seriously irritable when they have to go without, even for a few hours. Also, they never recognize this fact, which might be a side-effect of the pot.
I think that someone who only smoked pot occasionally and also lived in a remote area where they could grow their own would be OK. Probably a pot smoker in the Netherlands would be fine.
As for alcohol, most of the people I know who drink do not do it to the extent that their personality changes if they go a few days without, unlike most of the pot smokers I have known. Plus it's legal. It is, of course, a far larger health problem than pot, and so there are good reasons for pot to be legal. But in the current cultural climate, I do think that pot is a negative. Either let it be legal, so that those who have a dependency can satisfy it regularly at low cost, or else get used to the fact that many people are going to consider it a red flag.

| Strong opinions on pot smoking here and abouts; why? Posted: 9/10/2009 7:23:54 PM | Pot.... to me it is no big deal, used in moderation, there are worse things out there to worry about: crack cocaine, speed , child ponorgraphy, date rape.....
However....I also believe it is a gateway drug...
