I'll never go on a cruise for 2 reasons. I did my time in the Navy and when the ship goes out for 6 months at a time it's called a cruise. I know it's not exactly the same thing but it still has memories that make it a negative thing for me.

The second reason is that I choose live. Most cruise lines are flagged in someplace like Nigeria where it is much cheaper to pass the safety inspections. I think all you need there is a wet compass and a manual bilge pump to pass. Flag a ship in the US and I may consider it safe. The other problem is crew training. I have read many stories where in an emergency the crew was not helpful, made the situation worse, and even abandoned ship leaving the passengers to deal with the problem.

I'm not actually scared of boats, I live on mine. I read and train weekly, and carry more than the minimum amount of required safety gear.

been as passenger and crew

loved both and had no problems with safety even in emergencies.

they are miniature worlds on the sea - if you love the sea, and love the world and can accept it for its realities and restrictions its a great way to travel.

I'd have to say it is the one holiday everyone can actually relax on.

Love em, been on 5 cruises so far. As far as vacations go I think it's a good bang for the buck considering how much free entertainment & food and fun you get. I love being on a different island every morning. Can't imagine being stuck on the same small island for a week, I need more then just 12 hrs of beach every day to have fun.
What sucks for me though is that the flight to Florida costs as much or often more then the week long cruise itself. Suffering in a cramped plane for 5 hrs (round trip) shouldn't cost as much as a week of fun argh

I agree with you Sveen. I've also been on 5 cruises. I used to go backpacking in Europe years ago but when you only have a week off a cruise is the way to go. But as a single I would only book with a singles group tour. Otherwise you could be the lonliest person on board. I went with VTG and booked my own excursions by exploring information about each island beforehand. You could do as much or as little with the group as you wanted. It was a great time, I'd do it again. I'm lucky to live close to the ports.

Airline travel sucks/ cramped in any airplane is bad. Even for two hours, unless you go first class.

Been on 11 (ocean) cruises in 10 years. I want to do an East Asia cruise next (Japan, Korea, China) or SEAsia to Australia.
Being a single on a cruise is kinda lonely/boring and with going on as many cruises as I have they get a bit repetitive and I've only repeated 1 destination, once (Alaska). Still, I agree with the other posters about value, entertainment, different place each day. Good times.

Cruises are great vacations. I've been on 2 5 days an 1 last year that was 19 days. Loved them all. I cruised solo on all 3 of them and never felt lonely. Met lots of great people, had tons of fun an did just what I wanted to do. I keep trying to find cruise buddies, with no luck,(not to mention its nice to KNOW who you are rooming with, lol) and the only thing is the cruise lines seem to be totally anti solo when it comes to pricing. I would go way more often, but I refuse to pay 250% single supplement. You'd think having 1 person in a cabin would be better than no people in a cabin. But nooo. If anyone finds any great solo deals- pleaseeee let me know. I am a member on a cruise website(not sure if I can post that here, so message me) and they have a single/solo thread there if anyone is interested.

Hi,

I do a marketing service for a travel agent. He can do group vacations, cruises and help get good deals. What I am doing is booking appointments for him to come out and meet with single people or groups of singles who would like to travel. I will provide an information session. It is free without no obligations and he will give more details about the benefits. If anyone on this forum are planning to travel in groups, I can arrange a meeting.

If anyone is interested and have any further questions, you can email me at anita@uniglobedcatravel.com

or you can just respond to me here.

I have never been on a cruise but would love to go on one sometime.

Its more of a gf bf type vacation then a vacation for a single person. If I was to go on a cruise by myself, it would have to be a singles cruise, for a week, to a hot destination.

we have 12 hr fishing "cruises" here in houston where go sail far out into the gulf and fish.

it smells a bit and the bathrooms are less than 4 star you have to sleep on the floor...

but if you get a good catch it makes a great postcard.

I never been on a cruise because of extreme seasickness. Believe it or not I actually got sick standing on a lake dock!

Funny thing is that I love to scuba dive. Once I am under the water, I find my stomach calms and I enjoy the dive.

I love cruises. It's a great way to get away and relax, shop or do whatever. I like the meal variety and that they are included.

I am booked on my 53rd and 54th cruise in 2010. To me and my group of friends all younger than I we think it is a good vacation. I have met some really great people and also crew over the years. To each his own.

Ok, so I know you were looking for people who love cruises - that's not me. Went on a 12-day Mediterrean cruise a few months ago and hated it. Food was terrible, excursions were costly and not worth the money spent.

After reading all yours posts, I feel like I was on a Twilight Zone cruise.

HI all,
I went to cruise critic as advised by others on my cruise clothes thread. Everyone was talking about packing snacks and drinks. Since I don't drink, and all I drink is water, is it going to be a big hassle to get water bottles on different parts of the ship?

I tried reading some threads for first time cruisers but there was a lot of info and some of it conflicting. Some people advise to bring so much stuff, others say everything you need is available on the ship. Your thoughts? Thanks so much!

Yes, bottled water is available for purchase aboard ship. They usually also have it available for purchase on the gangway as you leave the ship on port days.

I have been cruising since 1988 and what I have noticed over those times is that cruising has changed so very much from those early days. Cruises are no longer the "formal" affairs they once were. Thankfully, casualness has taken over so there is no longer any need to pack the entire closet for a 7 day cruise. While there are still "formal" and "semi-formal" nights they are much more casual than they once were. While it is left entirely up to the individual traveler on how "formal" or how "casual" one wants to be, for the ladies that same black dress with different accessories/jewellery and for the men, a business suit, is all that is required for those more formal evenings.

My rule of thumb has always been to lay out everything you want to take with you on a bed and then pare it down by half. At half, you will find that is still more than enough and it will leave room in your suitcase to bring home more treasures that you find in your travels.

Cruising is really no different than going on an all-inclusive vacation with the exception that there really isn't all that much included with the cruises of today. Cruiselines will nickel and dime the passenger to death and your cruise experience can end up costing the passenger far more than bargained for if they are not aware of how quickly things add up in the cruise's cashless society.

Worry less about the what should I do's - just go to enjoy the experience and have fun.

Anyone know if they ever have dance lessons on cruises? I am taking ball room dance lessons and I wonder if they provide lessons of any kind on the ship or is it just shake you butt dancing in the bars?

Sorry Frankie. I'm not with you on this one. Generally best bang for your buck means that someone else is losing out. The treatment of labour employees by the major cruise lines is criminal. Many labourers are from the Phillipines. They are not allowed above deck. They are paid very little. They are forced to be away from their families for many months at a time. They have no days off. Some employers do not even pay for them to fly home when they are finished. Secondly, when the ships are on international waters there is very little recourse for criminal activity. Many women every year are raped on these cruises - often by the employees. They are further traumatized by not having any recourse.

So as the old adage goes .... if its too good to be true, it is generally too good to be true.
