I personally don't want a God fearing man... I'd rather have a mean sob that puts the fear of the devil in everyone that sees him... 'cept me of course.
I like peace and tranquility and what better way to get it than to be with someone so ornery that no one wants to come around?  | |

(as opposed to someone who considers themself Christian, but doesn't actively practice it) It seems like the expression is chiefly Southern, but I'm not sure.
A sizable majority of people don't seem to take their religious beliefs too seriously. Many are religious simply because their families considered themselves religious, but don't actively practice it. I would stay away from the profiles where people make it a point to indicate they have a personal relationship with God, that religion is important in a relationship, etc. They're far less likely to be open-minded about dating someone outside of their own religious beliefs. | |

I guess some feel that if they put that in their profile, it might act to weed out the bad characters. The only problem, it seems once the 'sinners' go to confession, or ask forgiveness, they go out and do it again...

why should you have to be afraid of God?
Read the Old Testament lately? God is a lean, mean, killing machine in those stories... him and his army of avenging angels ruling the Earth with an iron fist/bloody sword.
If you believe in that God then it is a pretty scary concept.
I'd much rather believe that God is like a giant puppy... and all of outer space smells like puppy breath! | |

I always thought it strange the way God is portrayed in the Old Testament. It almost seems like two different entities from Old to New. I'm just not into the whole ruling through fear thing, so when I see that phrase, it's BackSpace time.
Oh! Astronauts for the most part agree that space smells like steak and hot metal...I guess like a barbecue?

That's probably how it was derived, but I hear people use it in a less convictional context. On the other hand, phrases like, "strike the fear of God into you" are obviously more Old Testament.  | |

Ex, Sodom, Jobe, The plagues of eygpt, 40 days and nights of floods and everywhere about smiting and smoting. Then somewhere along the way after we murdered his son he had this change of heart, and he loves everyone no more mean God only nice happy God. So now he is not to be feared because he is on prozac and adavan so we can all be happy to knowing he won't smite us. | |

Posted: 9/15/2009 12:07:52 AM | I'm an atheist but if you've read the whole Bible (or book of your religious choice) and you actually live what is said in the holy book of whatever religion you profess to believe in, you'd certainly fear the god(s) in these books. But most people like the happy-go-lucky made up to fit their lifestyle religions, which have nothing to do with the holy books at all. I would have been stoned to death years ago if people were more God fearing and less do as I say not as I do.
Besides, Jesus (according to the Bible) told his followers to leave their wives and children and follow him, so probably most of these women wouldn't really want a god fearing man, they want a man they think they can control with fear. | |

I know I wouldn't want to date a man that said G.D. like that...Not Good...
Just means if your Christian that your serious about it...there are some that claim to have religion that are very liberal and may go against specific scriptures...God fearing means you take the scripture seriously and your religion seriously...not "flakey" about it...
Maybe some of the ladies out there are finally starting to figure out about the only way to find a man these days that isn't just out for sex is to seek one that is God fearing... | |

Posted: 9/15/2009 7:21:46 AM | Since the majority of Christians cannot even recite the 10 Commandments, and the first 4 have nothing to do with morality while the rest are covered under the Golden Rule, I believe the "God-fearing" phrase is code for fundamentalist, born-again types who wish to stick to their own kind. Some of the least moral people I have met were "God Fearing" including the two preachers who ripped me off for work done for them, and the nice Baptist man who stole all of my equipment out of his church after attending services that morning.
"God fearing" appears to be code as well for intolerance, judgement, and olde testament values over the teachings of Christ. I know Baptists who hate Church of God folks for their religion, and Church of God folks who hate Methodists, Episocpalians, Unitarians and definately pagans and Muslims.
I have also seen consistent high morals out of most I have met of the more liberal Christian traditions, pagans, wiccans, Buddhists, Muslims, etc. The idea that "God-fearing" somehow equates to morality is laughable. It is strictly code. | |

At that point, it is pretty much signifying that the person who believes that philosophy has no accountability for their actions as long as they ask for forgiveness and accept Christ.
As Einstein once said, if people only do good for fear of punishment and hopes for a reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. | |
