Discuss? Thoughts? Should Obama be entering his opinion into celebrity events of this nature? Should there be concern that Obama seems to have over-stated his opinion rather recklessly on numerous occasions, most recently before this involving a law-officer and a professor? Does anyone feel that Kanye was NOT behaving in untoward manner?

I wonder how Obama feels about using Kanye to get his message out now?

Do you think someone else should get credit for something Obama said? Who?

The president seems to quickly realize he may have gone too far, and jovially appeals to those assembled that the remark be kept private. "Come on guys," he says. "Cut the president some slack. I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate."

"If you're sitting there with a microphone on, you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy," said Kelly McBride, an expert in journalism ethics for the Poynter Institute. "If you're a governor or president, you know that."

It's good that he tells it like it is. If he didn't say anything some jerk here would have called him a racist for not calling out another black man.

I feel so sorry for the man, he can't have an opinion about anything without someone b*tching.

But...he is a jacka$$

Seriously, the guy is human. He didn't say anything different then what most Americans said about the incident, big deal.
There really are more serious issues to worry about, in my opinion.

I think Obama needs one of them Cone of Silence gadgets they used in Get Smart.

Anyways, thank-you Kanye West for creating another internet meme.

There are tons popping up everywhere. Some of them are pretty funny.

EDIT: Oh wait. The Cone of Silence actually backfired whenever it was used. lol

George Bush the first said he didn't like brocolli - then he had to spent hours placating the brocolli growers.

But did we elect the president to run the country, or to bash or condone rap artists? I think the main issue is that he went way off into left field to bash someone and then immediately began back-tracking because he knew he was out of line.

Ah, but was he backtracking because he "knew he was out of line"? Or did he backtrack because he knew a segment of the population would fly off the handle if he didn't; because he KNOWS that they're just lying in wait for the next sound byte to froth at the mouth over?

If you're going to attack the man, you should really pick something that matters...

Should Obama be entering his opinion into celebrity events of this nature?

Sure...why not! He was asked his opinion about what Kanye did during what is normally an 'off the record' period prior to his 'real' interview with that reporter.

Should there be concern that Obama seems to have over-stated his opinion rather recklessly on numerous occasions, most recently before this involving a law-officer and a professor?

Hmm...reckless not even close. Besides, I do not think any of his comments compare to these made by former presidents....

The incident is reminiscent of past "open-mic" incidents involving politicians. President Ronald Reagan, while waiting to make a speech in 1984, joked that he had outlawed the Soviet Union and that "the bombing begins in five minutes." During the 2000 presidential campaign, George W. Bush turned to running mate****Cheney to point out a reporter from The New York Times and used an obscenity to describe him.

Does anyone feel that Kanye was NOT behaving in untoward manner?

Kanye is a jackass for doing what he did at that awards show!

Reguardless of why he back-tracked, it was because he did something he didn't think about very much before he did it. He bashed Kanye for rash actions. I in turn feel that he committed his own little mistake therein. His out of turn statements during his campaign have not stopped. He seems to blurt out whatever he is feeling at the moment at times. Kindof worrysome.

He is subject to no more criticism than anyone before him. We drug Clinton's business out of the bedroom, we drug Bush's inability to pronounce words properly onto countless calendars and cartoons, and the American people are going to be irritated over Obama's need to insult people before thinking. Small town PA, Officer Crowly, Kanye West, etc.

At least in this case, most of America probably agrees with his opinion, but the way he voiced it was inappropriate and he knew it.

People are still mad at Bush II over a war that over 90% of Americans supported in the beginning, and like all the Obama defenders say--once it's started you can't just say "we're done playing, lets go home". Obama "deserves a break" just as much as anyone else, and he's not going to get it. They didn't get it and neither will he. I think the media gave him all the break he's going to get during his election.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... and when he was pausing to think before speaking on the campaign trail people said that he was being too political and "spinning". That he wasn't good enough "on the fly" or "quick enough on his feet".

We elect a human being to run the country. Why are you so affronted when he behaves like one? He wasn't making any judgment on Kanye as a "rap artist." He was chatting (off the record) and he answered a question about the hot topic in pop culture.

I think the main issue is that he went way off into left field to bash someone and then immediately began back-tracking because he knew he was out of line.
Oh, please. How, exactly, did he go "off in left field" by having a casual conversation? It is very telling when someone takes issue with something like this. Good lord.

A simple Google search will lead you to an audio of the conversation. If you are honestly going to take issue with a human being having the following conversation, you either have too much time on your hands or your issues are showing. Or both.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/14/obama-kanye-is-a-jackass_n_286623.html

Given your staunch position on this, should we assume that you do not think Kanye behaved like a jackass? I'm sure even he agrees that he did. Whatever is chapping your heiney is being misdirected... yikes.

That is, except apparently in Congress, which according to Congressional rules prohibit at least some telling of truth. It's just more "Do as I say, not as I do"-ism.
Sigh. Talk about a strawman argument. C'mon now. The issue is one of decorum, that's all. Twisting it around doesn't change anything. This is not about congressional rules against the truth. Talk about grasping at straws (pun intended.)

"YOU LIE!"

Seems only some people can have an opinion and others get censured.
You'd think the halls of Congress would be the ONE place in this country where a person could speak their mind. If a President can call someone a jackass because in his opinion it's the truth and not expect flak, then a Congressional Representative can call said President a liar if he is in fact lying, since it runs exactly counter to what officials who know otherwise say...

That is, except apparently in Congress, which according to Congressional rules prohibit at least some telling of truth. It's just more "Do as I say, not as I do"-ism.

I do find it ironic that if a President knowingly lies in Congress, there are rules of order prohbiting anyone from calling him on it. Explains a lot about what happens over there though.

Whatever, but whoever does something like this is just for attention.
People who didn't know him, now know him.
This is the way to get attention by anybody. You can get your 15 mins. of fame or more fame than you already have. All you have to do after the fact is say you are sorry.

Too bad that doesn't work here on forums. Messages just get deleted.

I was just musing over that. I can take a few guesses, but I'm sure Kanye won't keep us waiting too long. It will be amusing if he handles the situation with more decorum than Obama though and stays his tongue.

According to Congressional rules, "disgrace" and "nitwit" seem to be acceptable political correctness. It'd be interesting to hear what he calls people who disagree with him....oh wait - probably "jackasses" as well. And worse, I'm sure.

I think a President should not have any ill thoughts of anyone, say nothing in anger, speak ill of the dead, love dogs and not lust after any person other than thier S/O.

In short the President should love everybody.

I don't think Obama will have to spend much time placating Kanye West lovers.

The MTV awards are nothing but a big freak show/self promoting/circus act . Every year somebody does something outrageous to get attention/publicity for MTV.
Last year it was Emenem and Bruno.
Before that, it was Madonna and Brittney kissing.

When are we going to stop paying so much attention to these petty little shows ?

Why not, he has an opinion just like I do. He is entitle to have regular conversation as I am. The differents is people scream louder when they disagree with his opinion than mine and it makes the news. But this does not mean he should be a robot.
