So Jehovah's Witnesses showed up at my door...
Posted: 9/16/2009 9:03:32 AM
So a few Jehovah's Witnesses showed up at my door preaching about Christ and what not. I think I spent more time talking then they did. I talked to them about the universe and science and evolution. They tried explaining this world was finely tuned for life. I told them that their argument would only be valid if Earth was the ONLY planet to exist. I talked to them about evolution and how things have evolved based on their environment and that by denying evolution, they are denying what every mainstream biologist in the world has acknowledged to be true and that mutations are just another name for evolution....

...

They haven't come back since.

Did I do something wrong?

Oh, they'll be back. They're gathering up scriptural passages to defend their beliefs. (brainwashing) Very scary religion.
My sister is a witness. She was baptized 12 years ago.
We have some interesting conversations and debates. However, in doing so, I must be very careful not to voice any scientific reason whatsoever or she gets very offended and downright defensive.
My take on it, "is whatever floats your boat..."
Witnesses are highly trained human beings.
To believe or even explore anything other than what they've been brainwashed into knowing as the "truth" means they will not be eligable for eternal life.

I don't really have a problem talking to them. They're always so nice and i love chatting up people. I know I'm not a believer and no matter what they say isn't going to change that, so it's a bit amusing to listen unless I'm in a bad or impatient mood.

There was one fellow who called before, i found out him and his wife and baby moved here a month ago at that point. I talked to him about how he was thinking about going back to school for a trade. I'd let him say his spiel for 5 or 10 mins, talk a little more, "how are u guys getting along in the city?" and so on.

lol. ok, maybe i need more friends.

go into the bedroom and hide under the bed..

Oh that's priceless SB...

You brought back a funny memory from my childhood.

I remember visiting a friends home up the street when I was about four or five and the Witnesses came a callin'. My friends mother was terrified to open the door. She had all of us kids gathered up and crawling on the floor close to the wall toward the safety of the kitchen pantry so they couldn't see us through the windows...

Well, the bible says you are supposed to go out and convert people.

Actually OP, a million years when I was a Catholic school girl, I asked a nun about the Witnesses - and stated the above fact. Then I asked why we didn't do that.

Apparently, I am going to hell.

We get both JW and Mormons in my area. They are always very polite, as am I. I have respect for them - they are doing what they believe in. I always respect moral conviction, even if I don't share their beliefs.

Did I do something wrong?

No you didn't do anything wrong...and they'll be back...sorry couldn't help but do that in my Arnie voice.

JW's keep very meticulous records of...did anyone answer, who answered male/female, if there was a conversation, if interest was shown, was a magazine placed, call back...

All this is recorded and sent in, here in the UK its at the Bethel, Bowes Road London.

These people are dangerous, they will tear your life up, I can tell you more about these people that their elders ever could.

Last time I got such visitors, I spent my time educating them on the history of the bible... didn't hurt to much to toss in how much money was made off the bible last year, and then raised the question... do you think this is what Jesus wanted?

I have heard good things and bad things about people. And labels such as dangerous should be put on persecution , not human beings, as human beings are subject to change. Treat people as you would like to be treated, they go out not knowing how they are going to be treated and it is quite often they are treated with ridicule, abuse and violence. They are asked by their faith to go out and spread the word of God.
They are people who believe in a future. But ultimately they are people!

Or... when they ask if you've "Found Jesus Yet" you could say "Nope - but I've got him cornered behind the sofa - help me with the net, while I poke'im with the cattle prod..."

Hi Andy. As a rational and well educated man, iirc a working physicist I naturally respect you quite highly, but have noted an undercurrent of irrationality towards the religious on a couple of occasions which has had me curious. I don't mean to offend, it's just remember among me and my nerdy school friends the fundamentalists were at worst a source of tremendous amusment, whilst we accorded their democratic freedom if they actually came over to start Bible bashing it was they walking away frustrated and we laughing. And I think the real catalyst for this was the fact as a bunch of pretty decent guys albeit with an occasionally cutting sarcasm, we were basically practising any moral value you might get from a religion as a matter of course to begin with, plus as a little subculture of library nerds we had a sense of community. There was really nothing to "save" us from.

Now I did have my period of what should be termed mild or unsustained abuse at the hands of the religious in an orphaned lifestyle in my later teens. And had a few years there fundamentalism really got on my nerves.
But again now I'm older I've come back to being largely unaffected by it or any implications no matter how wild, regarding it. I feel quite assured if I had a soul any different from a pot plant, a highly doubtful proposition it would nevertheless be quite safe in the very face of the holiest light. It is how I've chosen to live my life of good conscience and practability and not as if in some kind of contract or deal to receive in payment an appropriate afterlife. I should think I would do better here in fact than the fundamentalists. I think they hardly even know what they're talking about. It seems to be even a cursory, genuine theological research proves this.

So my curiosity about some possibly unresolved animosity towards religious fundamentalism you have remains. They really are quite silly people. Might it be productive to be specific? If it is not too personal.

Back in my mid twenties, I used to get JWs calling on me pretty often...until a family of them showed up and I answered the door in my underwear, with a beer in my hand and invited them in. for some reason they declined the invitation owing to a forgotten appointment and offered to come back later... I never saw them again. Word must have gotten out about the disgusting heathen at my address, because I was never bothered by JWs there again.

My next encounter with them was about 15 years later, in the driveway at a different address. Unfortunately, I was dressed & sober at the time, but managed to get the "floor" and held it till they got frustrated trying to explain how they had IVs and hypodermic needles in Biblical times between my fits of laughter.... That was over 15 years ago; they haven't been back, so I guess word got out about the heathen "clown" at that address.

I won't bore you with my encounters with the Mormon kids... It'd just be pretty much the same story as the JWs, except that I may have persuaded them (I'm a pretty good "preacher" in my own right) that there is no God; the only thing worthy of worship is the sacred bottle!...

Hahaha! You remind me of a friend of mine, a flamboyantly gay, promiscuous guy who moved to a rural area to help his aging father on his farm. My friend's very macho, hetero brother is too much of a drunk to help out and not interested in the farm anyway. So, of course, the "black sheep" son is the one who comes home to help his dad.

One day these "missionaries" show up at the door asking him if he's saved. Now, my friend is *very* involved in a 12 Step program, *very* much into his "Higher Power," and right away he's saying to them, "Oh, yes!" and starts outdoing them at their own game. He's trying to invite them inside for coffee & to sit & talk about how God has worked in his life and they're trying to, uh, gracefully back out of it. It was hilarious to hear him talk about it.

You won't change their minds but sounds like you had a good time and I can't see where you did anything wrong.

Since I'm neither of those (Not that there's anything wrong with that), I take it you were referring to some other similarity betweeen myself and your friend, like my flamboyance (I'm flamboyantly disgusting, often decorating myself with last night's semi-digested pizza - tastefully of course; it has to blend nicely with my "wife beater" & dirty jeans --Georgio Armani can eat his heart out!), or maybe the booze?...

O they'll be back... usually bringing an 'elder'
who can explain things better. Happened with me with the Mormons. They brought in a heavyweight elder but we just ended up discussing the history of the bible... I must admit that having these discussions and interactions sharpens your own belief system...

from what you said, it doesn't sound like you offended them.
why offend them, unless some people are not secure enough to talk to anyone about anything, [other than deleterious stuff, of course]
hey, they are people too, just like anybody, aren't they?
don't they also, add an interesting element to life?
isn't it cool to put up with all kinds of things we don't personally believe in?
good opportunity to learn about stuff, unless of course, you already know all about those things.
or, if you really don't have the time, or are intimidated by that belief, excuse yourself politely.
or if you get off on throwing them out, and telling everyone about it, what can I say?

Well as I can’t speak on the forums about myself…I shall give you a for instance.

Back in 1972 this guys mum had a knock on the door, it was the JW’s, long story short she became a witness. He was only 6 at the time. His dad wasn’t but stayed to prevent ‘indoctrination’ of his kids. Each xmas was a time of conflict, as was birthdays and any celebration, invites to…for eg. This guy met someone and they had 2 kids. Well they went through a rocky patch and his mum started siding with his partner. His now ex started attending the kingdom halls as did his kids. As this guy was not a witness and not married, his ex was advised to stop seeing him and for the kids not to also. His mother sided with the ex and said she was ‘acting in the best interest of the kids’ This interest was to get the kids to be baptised. It took a year for the dad to go through court to get access to see them as she had the full support of the church. His saw them for 6 mths then contact stopped again. It has been 2 years now since he has seen his kids, the social services have concluded that the kids are subject to ‘Stockholm syndrome’. They cannot find grounds to remove the kids as there is only ‘mental’ abuse if he persists in action.
So from experience he knows that these kids will be brought up with guided tours of the natural history museums with particular emphasis on the fossils being faked (homo erectus being just a deformed man) and how they could have all been formed during the flood. How it is pointless even doing your exams or taking your driving licence, as Armageddon is ‘just around the corner’. To only have a selected group of friends who may be taken from your life IF their parents stop being witnesses. To be advised that you shouldn’t have kids as it would be unfair as the end time is near…by the way, that was supposed to be in 1914 when Satan was cast out of heaven, then 1975 when it was 6000yrs, then 1994 or 6 cant remember off hand, then it was ‘the people who saw the beginning of the end will see Armageddon’, now its 6000yrs from when Eve was created, as they don’t know when she was…it could be anytime now.

So you can go on as say that these are just ‘silly people’ with their crack pot ideas, but they are far from it. They prey on the weak minded and vulnerable, divide and conquer.

So this guy now sits there waiting for the courts to agree to let him see them and posts aimlessly on dating forums.

The conflict for me comes in that in order to beat religion you must understand it. Don’t confuse a ‘belief’ in God with a ‘belief’ in religion. Religion is the root of most evil…not a God. If you believe in a God you must believe in a good and bad. In the bible if you translate it properly, function and dysfunction, you can believe in a God and be functional without a religion. Science helps us understand the mechanisms of the universe, you cannot just use science solely to disprove religion or God for that matter. This is why arguing over creation v’s evolution is like apples and oranges. To me evolution is the effect of creation (define creation), How can the big bang be caused in a zero time frame…when time did not exist.

So you can rant and rave about circumcision blah blah blah OP, but for some of my mates that have been blown up in the name of Allah and for this guy who has missed the joys of watching his kids growing up…it’s not so funny anymore.
