| Pick a topic... ummm... internet addiction support groups?? Posted: 9/16/2009 4:02:56 PM | Time to shake up the forums!
I recently heard that "internet addiction" is actually a problem now. I suppose that isn't hard to believe, with all the dating sites, Facebooking, tweeting, MSNing, etc... it's become a virtual world. Face-to-face "chats" are getting scarce, which is a sad fact. :-( I don't consider myself addicted, by any means, though I do remember when I first got "online" a few years ago, and would freak when the internet was down! But... I guess the novelty wore off for me. I no longer chat on MSN, or in chat rooms, nor am I on Facebook... but I'm still in touch with friends through hotmail. Does that make me old-fashioned... add the fact that I don't own a cell phone, blackberry, or Ipod??
What about you... are you "addicted" and if so, what's your "drug of choice"?

| Pick a topic... ummm... internet addiction support groups?? Posted: 9/16/2009 5:35:08 PM | I am most definitely addicted in the moment. I play on the forums, facebook and some movies...
I've been switching pc and they've been crashing so I need the internet going for the moment so that I can get my next pc up and running...
I'll probably get rid of the net once I get a decent pc up and running. It's an addiction I don't need and there's always the library(which gets me out of the house) for the times where I do need the Internet for something.
It's a major time waster and pretty useless if I look at what I am doing with it.

OT..... I am not near as addicted to the internet as I once was many moons ago. I think it is like anything, the novelty wears off. I don't own a cell phone and never have. I really don't want anyone contacting me when I leave the house. I am funny like that. My addiction lately is Rockband, I can't get enough of that. :)

| Pick a topic... ummm... internet addiction support groups?? Posted: 9/16/2009 7:02:58 PM | Our society in general is becoming compulsive based due to very subtle marketing strategies that formulate anxiety disorders in people, driving many who are feeling disconnected.
It is all designed to pressure people to fit the new social norm. The pressure to have and use the next tech wonder is the new form of social materialism. Partly because technology makes people feel empowered, and those who sell the gadgets and whizmigs know this and target that emotion.
Sad part is how hidden and subliminal this drive is. Unless you are more then 40 years old then you probably don't see how bad it has become, since many young people today have grown up around gadgets and can't function well without them.
Internet Addiction is just a symptom of the larger problem. People are forming emotional attachments to their devices and technologies, because much else is absent in their lives. All part of the overall elitist mindset. Too bad few people take the time to think about how it is damaging their lives more then helping it.

| Pick a topic... ummm... internet addiction support groups?? Posted: 9/17/2009 4:48:12 AM | I could not live without my Internet ! So , am I addicted? U betcha ! Mind ya , I do not spend hrs poring over the thing , but I get on at least 10 times a day , whether it be for 10 mins or 5 mins .. check emails , find a phone number , address, menu list , party venue .. or just think of a weird question off the top of my head ! U can google anything and find a answer!!
I still find time to read a book , do housework , watch a movie (on TV) . and spend time with my friends .. but let's face it .. Internet makes life SO much easier !!! So like anything else.. use it responsibly

Posted: 9/17/2009 4:48:54 AM | There's nothing new about marketing to the population, just the abiltity to reach more people.Internet, blackberry, cellphones etc. are just a habit like anything else is or was,and people loving the newest gadgets are nothing new either.
Balance and moderation have always been the key to healthy living and always will be,it's just a harder sell. The insecure or anxious etc. will always be the more vulnerable to promises of the quick fix or the soft sell. The only thing that changes is the ease of targeting more people faster.
A good parent and support system can counteract all that better than anything, and this is what too many lack.
IMHO of course ...

Posted: 9/17/2009 10:29:20 AM | I agree Vampie...the internet is a convenience and a fast way to get info (google) also a pass time for singles who are home in the evenings...not all are serial daters lol I hear a lot of my married and hooked up friends complain that the machine does interfer with their relationships because one of them is always on internet which in turn takes away from their quality time together
I also don't own a cell phone, blackberry etc. anymore...they are a nuisance...when I go out, I don't want to be found lmao...I did own one when my kids were younger and lived at home, more for an emergency contact only... besides family, not many had the number anyhow
I think it's very rude when out with groups of friends and they spend the whole time texting, tweeting or whatever when they should be socializing with their friends who are there with them in the flesh ...
I agree with whoever said "only ppl over the age of 40 get this"...my kids (young adults now) grew up with all these gadgets, no thanks to me tho lmao.., I didn't give in to the tech crap, didn't have to...my ex made sure he and they had the latest new gadgets the first day it was on the market for sale...drove me nuts (he's a tech junkie always was)...what 10 yr old needs all that??? I wouldn't take gifts/bribes received from their dad away from them, however, mon-fri while under my roof it was monitored...they just knew if they took cell phone to dinner table, or if I caught them messing with it during study or bedtime they would lose it til it was time to go to dads on the weekend...I'm sure they muffled B**ch under their breaths more than once lmao but that is too bad! self control and manners are very important in this world and ppl who have them get further in life (imo of course)...I'm just glad my kids turned out respectful of others and understand now why I did what I did when parenting them..so all good in the end...

Could have been at one time -- as it is I make my living online. But I think my "drug of choice" would be a cold beer and weekends when I can get away from it.

If your too cheap to own a cellphone, go find a payphone. Why should someone that purchased a cellphone feel obligated to loan it to you, because you choose to live in a pre-1980 world.

I guess they'd let you use their phone out of kindness,as foreign as that may be to you, just like I give people rides in my car occasionally despite them choosing to live in a pre - 20th century world.

I didn't own a cell phone for many years, but with kids, it's a safety/security thing, so I got one. If you choose not to own a car or phone, but expect to use mine or others, then your a user. Now is someone is broke down and needs assistance that is different. But if your just cheap , then the hell with ya.

not cheap at all ...as I mentioned, cell phones are a nuisance to me not a necessity...when I'm out with friends, I'm out with them...not with ppl who aren't there...I have no prob using a payphone if I need to make a call that badly ...friends don't use friends, we are courteous and good to each other...but those who don't have friends, wouldn't know that! lol... gee...my neighbor doesn't own a super large lobster pot and just came to borrow mine, should I call him a user..I think not!..

I believe Divine stated ,and you even quoted her, saying desperately needed to borrow one.I think that denotes an urgent need and not someone just being " too cheap" to buy one.Just another case of not reading what's actually written, but instead what your negative mind reads into it.
I don't borrow cell phones and I use payphones when I need one happily, unfortunately the advent of cell phones is killing the payphone. It's getting harder to find one and then to have it work at the same time.

So I suppose the saying give the shirt off your back would never apply to you? And if someone was dying of thirst you wouldn't spit in their mouth??

| Pick a topic... ummm... internet addiction support groups?? Posted: 9/18/2009 5:48:37 PM | Methinks Back4More is trying to "liven" things up perhaps??
You can't honestly call people who don't own cell phones because they prefer the freedom of not having one... cheap... can you??? I don't own a cell phone (and I DO use pay phones when I need to, but as posted, only when I can find one that works), nor do I own a car, and that's not because I'm cheap, but because I live and work downtown and prefer to walk or cab it... or rent when necessary.
You're painting everyone with the same stripe... think about it.
Plus... you must have a lot of "user" friends, do you? But then again, I don't suppose you'd call anyone a friend who would dare ask a small favour of you.
