Lost 115 pounds so far
Posted: 9/16/2009 10:28:08 PM
So I topped the scales at 440 pounds. So far I've lost 115 pounds. I walk anywhere from 2 to 8 miles a day. I am still a big guy but I am already getting to where I can do a lot of things skinny people cannot. I will be running in the Mule Day 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk on Sept. 26th. Mule Day is an annual festival in Winfield Alabama. I've lost the weight by getting active, staying away from products with aspartame and corn syrup. Especially high fructose corn syrup. I also count calories and try to keep my body's pH levels on an alkaline level. I don't drink soda anymore period. That is how I have lost it. It has been a true life style change that stems from losing my grandparents. I want to hear from people who have lost weight as well and how did y'all do it.

Also do you have any advice?

My biggest advice to people looking to lose weight is to change the way your mind thinks. Make weight loss a happy side effect of healthy living. Don't get down if you have an unhealthy day or moment because one unhealthy day or moment isn't going to effect you the way you think it does. Most people give up on diets because they view it as a diet and not a life style.

Fantastic

Since July 20th I have lost 15 lbs, could have been more but there were a couple of family occasions that I allowed a little indulgence. I still need to loose 10 - 15 more pounds.

Mainly I have lost the weight by:

Starts at the grocery store, if it doesn't go in the cart it can't come home with ya!
Only eat when hungry
(drink plenty of water to make sure it's hunger and not thirst)
reduce portion size
count calories
I drink 48 oz of skim milk a day, four 16 oz servings a day. Love my milk.

I was lifting weights and bike riding for exercise but right now I am just cutting firewood.

It takes about three weeks to make these practices into a habit where you don't constantly have to think about it. In about the same time frame you will find that it takes less food to satisfy your hunger.

On portion size, when possible, put the food on the plate before cooking to see how much food you have. This will keep you from cooking too much.

Dinner plates used to be smaller than what is common today. I believe that the diameters of most plates today are 2" larger than what was common a generation ago. When buying your next set of dinnerware you may wish to look for smaller plates. This will reduce how much food you can get in a single serving.

Have a good attitude about it, this is a change in live style, not a punishment. Allow your self an OCCASIONAL treat with out guilt.

Try to loose weight like the tortoise not the hare and you should be good to win the race!

I have lost over 85 pounds over 15 months after having pituitary surgery and not being able to lose any for several years...How did it...lots of cardio, and then interval training once I got in better shape, increased strength training, and changed my diet just a little....havent really eliminated much just limit a lot of things....

"Also do you have any advice?"

- Make changes every month esp. if your progress has slowed.
- Dont be a slave to the scale...take pictures and judge by clothing sizes.
- Figure out why you were heavy to start with (emotional eating, bored, etc.) and fix it.

That's an excellent point and is one of the hardest things to get over. I lost about 45 lbs over the summer, just by changing how I "think" about food and being more active. You have to work out, but you have to love what you are doing because of the end goal in mind. Losing weight is a great feeling, I've dropped two pants sizes. Awesome, because shopping at the big guy store got expensive. I would have loved to drop 115lbs, I'm sure I could do it if I really want to, though now I am aiming for 30lbs more. I figure at that level, I will be happier.

Keep up the good work! The fact is, being thinner is a lifestyle change. It doesn't mean you have to eat salads every day, just be smart about what you are putting into your body.

yea! i totally agree about the whole changing your mentality/attitude towards weight-gain/loss. - i've tried for about 5 years with no luck (i was a "skinny mini" before college.. and then... kaBOOM!! pounds!). and then recently i've had to work A LOT (working overtime), been super busy, and now a month later of not realizing i'd forgotten about it and not "obsessed" over it the pounds have seem to have magically melted away!

- i live in nyc, and instead of relying *completely* on the transit system, i got a xootr kick scooter and use it to fill in the gaps between trains. (sometimes the buses are a joke!). - oh man, talk about loose jeans! (even the band size of my bra around my ribcage shrank!) - and for suburbanites, you can opt to use it for quick errands/jaunts to your coffee runs/etc. :) (i used to bike everywhere back home in VA before college.)
- they offer a shoulder strap, but ha i've noticed that carrying it around/lifting the 8 lb scooter over the subway turnstiles has actually toned my arms! - i used to feel a bit embarrassed about what i called my "arm squish" and wearing tank tops, but :) now it's like i never had that tricep flab!
- messenger bags/crossbody bags look cool, but i've found that my good ol' forgotten jansport corrects my posture, thus i dont lean forward for balance & no tummy pooch.
- it takes a lil extra time, but it's worth it: skip the elevator! - if it's anywhere on the 2nd-7th floor, i'll take the stairs. - and i know it sounds silly, but tighten/squeeeze those buns as you climb those stairs!! and try to go at a comfortable yet smart pace; a light huff n puff never hurt anyone! :) and hey, a light healthy rosy hue in the cheeks is always appealing :)
- i drink LOTS of water. of course this is optional, but i eventually invested in a hydration pack (i got a Camelback.) mine holds 2 liters. they're great cuz there's no water bottle to possibly lose or to take up space in you bag. - i've found that my dry skin issues have completely disappeared/Chapstick will miss me lol, my is completely clear, my friends say my face "glows", my hair is SO SILKY, my eyes are brighter, i sleep better/my mind is clearer... the list goes on. most people take this small change for granted til they try it.
- my system is able to more fully/easily flush all the built-up bad junk now, lol revealing the more svelt me that was hidden under layers of college junk food.
- i pack my lunch! - not only does it save $, makes sure it healthy "real" food, it also controls portions. :)

hrm.. i know a lot of these are verbose versions of what people have mentioned already.. but i felt that i should share what i've tried/gone through. :)

and as for being realistic about myself/size/goal - i'm allowing myself to admire the abs of Keira Knightly and Beyonce, but i know i'm not them. and as the layers and pounds of chub leave me and slowly reveal more and more of what my real (potential) shape is/could be.. i'm learning that: (i'm actually a bit of an hourglass, whodathunk?! ya know?? haha versus the donut i carried around my middle!) to love myself and be satisfied with it too. - i also know that i'll never have the cute tush or figure of Allesandra Ambrosio (dude, that's gotta be a made up model name... Ambrosio?? as in after the food of the Gods?? lol, who here agrees with me?? :) )

- welllll, enough rambling from me~ :)

True, each day is a new day and the only goal you need to have it today you will do everything in your power to live healthy.

If someone you fail, then tomorrow is a new day.

The I would add, do not do it for the results, but accept the results as a bonus of your lifestyle change.

I think I "found" 20 of the pounds you lost. Where should we meet so I can give them back to you?

CONGRATS!!! I lost 108lbs and now 56 inches total so I'm with ya! Exercise and eating lots of protein & fruits/veggies. I only eat natural carbs if possible and drink lots of water. This isn't really any thing new though.

Unhealthy day's are a choice. I can go to the worst restaurants and still make decent choices. For me, I'd rather make the choice of eating something healthy UNLESS I have a craving for something then I decide to responsibly give into a craving.

Yeah, can say I'm not on a diet, but its life. Way to go. Keep up the good work.

This.

So many people think "Oh, I had a potato chip, might as well give up for this month". One meal, one day, won't hinder your progress. Most people will see the 5lb or whatever increase after a cheat day and think it's all fat, when it's all water weight.
