are you getting the "shot"?

the hype of this h1n1 flu is really gettin old fast
from the natives crying because they got body bags in their shipment to the gov now crying at the inflated cost of this so called shot .
we all know its gonna hit us in the pocket in the beginning and the end
are or should we feel obligated to go get this shot since weve all paid a preium for it?
i have a friend that got it when it first came out, shes now had the flu 3 times already and felt like shit for over a month.
i find it funny that everyone is getting worked up into a frenzy over this flu, since the flu is a fact oflife for us up here in our changing environment
personally, they can stab my flu shot into their own arms as i refuse to be innoculated and given the flu .

Already Tamiflu (most lauded flu shot) resistant strain in Alberta. No matter to me though as I still let my body do it's own dirty work, and suffer far less than pill-poppers on any front. *knock on wood*

they can keep it.

The last flu shot I had was about 8 years ago, work 'required' we have it. I was sicker then a dog that whole winter.

Never again.

No, I won't bother. I haven't gotten sick since I quit smoking four years ago.

Probably not. I never get a flu shot and never get sick. Not even colds. Knock on wood, I hope saying that isn't the kiss of death. Literally LOL

I get a cold once a year, shot or no shot, so I doubt I will get it. I will recommend that my mom gets it though. Even though she's still the picture of health at 86, I figure anything that might help is worth it.

Tall N Curvy... I hope your theory is good for me. This will be my first winter without the weed.

Probably not unless my grandson is still living with me then possibly for his sake. I have never had a flu shot and haven't been taken down by a flu in about 8 years now.

No flu shot for me, but I think it's a good idea for older folks that can't recover that fast. About 6 years ago my then GF and I both got the flu at the same time. All I can say is "wow". The effects of this weren't just feeling tired and lethargic..but completely unable to get out of bed. We lived in a 1 bedroom apartment and just walking to the bathroom took up all your energy. Lived off Cranberry juice for 4 days and lost about 12 pounds. At the time I was a long distance jogger putting about 70 kms a week on the treadmill so I was in pretty good shape. To get back to feeling fully healthy took a few weeks.

If that can do that to a healthy male I don't want to know what it could do to someone older or with health problems.

My youngest landed himself in the hospital with RSV last year, and was hospitalized for 5 days. The 4th day we were there, they began slowing down the Ventolin intake, and that's when we noticed the Ventolin actually had the opposite effect on him, and depleted his oxygen. Day 5, they took him off the Ventolin entirely, and within 4 hours, he was himself again! The Pediatrician felt she had to see how it affected him for herself, and dosed him with FOUR puffs of Ventolin on the 5th day. My little man passed out within moments of taking it.

Lung condition + no rescue medication + H1N1 = death for my little guy

So YEP!! We will be taking the flu shot this year, even though I tend to get horribly sick after a flu shot myself. I'd rather be sick and feel run down then ever have to go through what we went through last year again!

Maybe the OP should do a little research on what inoculation is and how it works. No live virus is ever used in a flu shot.

I will probably get the shot but will wait to see how people react to it before I get it. I have asthma and I don't want to be faced with the breathing difficulties and possible death. Influenza kills thousands of people every year, even relatively young, healthy people. The last time I had the flu I thought I was going to die alone in a hotel room - couldn't function for days.

Nope.

First of all, the first vaccinations are not expected to begin until November, however, the spread of H1N1 is expected to peak in October. By the time you can get it, you will likely have already been exposed.

Secondly, this vaccine is being rushed into production. It will NOT be well tested, and it will also be adjuvanted, which means it will contain compounds that are added to a vaccine to boost its effectiveness. Adding this chemical increases its risk factor, particularly in children and pregnant women.

So, Health Canada wants us to be vaccinated with a vaccine that is not properly tested, contains an additive that will increase the risk of complications AND is probably not going to do a lot of us any good anyway because it will be too late.

Any takers?

Not me!

yeah, thats what the CHR tried to sell to me last year.... until I got ahold of my union chairperson and got a doctor's note--->no shot for this chick. Had I gotten sick, and there is an outbreak, unless they have alternative duties, I get sent home WITH pay.

I'm sure I'll get the "shot" for the H1N1 and any other flu strains that I'm able to be vaccinated against. I've done so 5 or 6 of the past years and may as well continue to. No big deal for me. Have to admit though this year is a bit unnerving. Hopefully the Flames won't be stick handling around piles of body bags down at the Saddledome anytime soon...!!

If you are asking about the regular flu shot then yes. A nurse is coming to my office and the company pays for it so why not. I used to be concerned that maybe my immune system needs to be utilized or it doesn't get stronger but I have yet to hear a doctor say getting a flu shot is not good for you and all so far say it is. I'll likely get the swine flu shot when it comes out too. Why is it so many folks are against getting the shot?

Why would they tell you it's bad for you?? that'd mean loss of revenue for them if everyone decided not to get it because it's bad... they get paid for every shot they give. You honestly think they're going to tell you it's bad for you and lose all that money??

I can only speak for myself, but I used to get it, on and off, years ago, and the years I DID get it, I was sick sick sick... the years I missed, I had nothing but minor colds. Why would I be putting something in my body that I KNOW is going to make me lose a bunch of sick days?? Not really rocket science, for me anyways.

IMO, flu shots always have been and always will be PR and “damage control” tactics exercised by the various public health agencies. The public demands that these agencies DO SOMETHING to protect them from flu outbreaks so they have to appear that they are to appease the public and to deflect criticism. But the reality is that there are so many different strains circulating and they mutate so quickly that flu vaccinations are like trying to kill a swarm of bees with a pee shooter.

This vaccine, in particular, is dangerous.

I suppose if you base your decision on which is more dangerous the vaccine or the flu strain... well then you have the answer. Or on the other hand don't worry, do nothing...

So every doctor out there is making money from flu shots? Is your gyno or heart specialist? And they are making enough money that they have no ethics? Guess I know some doctors I trust.

I can see why you don't get the shot. I have yet to have a bad reaction nor have heard any coworker, family or friend have has had a bad reaction.

I am not judging anyone who doesn't get the shot. I am just curious as to the different reasons folks feel so strongly against them

I trust my doctor too, I've been with her for years and she'll be the first to tell me I don't need it.

I was talking more along the lines of the nurses who the workplace brings in, or the community health places... they hype it up like you're gonna die or get deathly ill if you don't get it, and the majority of people do get it. I simply prefer not to because I know it makes me sick, and the more people I talk to, the more have the same reaction as me.

To each their own tho. I'll take my chances this year.

“Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Sir Winston Churchill

During the last swine flu outbreak in 1976, the US government rushed an inadequately tested vaccine into production. Vaccinations began October 1 and by the middle of December, the government suspended and recalled them as it was discovered that the risk of developing Guillain-Barré syndrome was 11 (11 !!!) times greater WITH the vaccine than without it. In the short period of time that the vaccine was deployed, about 500 people were afflicted with GBS, and 25 died. More than the number of people who died from the flu that they were being vaccinated against.

“Guillain-Barré syndrome: an autoimmune disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. It is frequently severe and usually exhibits as an ascending paralysis noted by weakness in the legs that spreads to the upper limbs and the face along with complete loss of deep tendon reflexes. With prompt treatment by plasmapheresis or intravenous immunoglobulin and supportive care, the majority of patients will regain full functional capacity. However, death may occur if severe pulmonary complications and autonomic nervous system problems are present. Guillain-Barre is one of the leading causes of non-trauma-induced paralysis in the world.”

It has already been reported in the media that this vaccine will be subject to abbreviated testing using a very small sample of subjects. If the vaccination side effects of the 1976 outbreak is an example of the havoc that an inadequately tested vaccine can wreak, I would consider that sufficient “proof” that this inadequately tested vaccine is dangerous. Others may not agree, however, I’ll take my chances with the flu, thanks anyway.
