Does anyone do any boxing exercising? I am looking into maybe joining a boxing club to do something different. I'm curious if anyone does it and enjoys it? I'm wanting to try something new. Some of you may know me and not know but I'm down 108lbs now. Is it difficult to get the hang of?

I'm just a beginner and am a little nervous just going in the facility, but I know others started not knowing.

Well first is it a boxing gym, where boxers train for matches? Do they spar? If so then I would watch a couple workouts and make sure you want something that intense. Getting hit in the head three times a week is not for everyone.

If it is like 90% of the "boxing gyms" where people jump around and shadow box to music, then you have nothing to worry about. That is like cardio boxing just for exercise. It is good for you and not so hard on the head. That is the upside, downside is you won't really learn to box or punch properly.

You have to figure out which one you want and what type of gym it is.

Anyone I know who's been in it has enjoyed it, male and female. It will definitely give you strong toned arms. But as the previous poster said, be prepared to get socked in the face on a regular basis.

Like Shurite said, you need to figure out what you're looking for, and checking out what they do there will give you a good idea. I don't belong to a boxing club, but I do take real boxing classes, where we are shown the real techniques. No sparring for now. You always have a choice about sparring. I doubt any boxing gym would force you to spar if you didn't want to. On the other hand, there's no better way to really learn to keep your guard up!

Boxercise, Tae box, Kick aerobics and the like may be good exercise, but a real boxing workout will push you harder than you ever imagined. You will gain confidence and stamina, and learn some great moves along the way. I love it, but it is hard work. Look around for something that suits YOU, though.

I did it all! I took a boxing class this evening and it was a freaking blast. Kicked my ass and was a huge workout, but I can tell all my hardwork paid off at the gym. If you all could see me that I am smiling so big right now!

The workouts themselves are taxing but once you get in the habit of doing them you'll love it and they'll become easier as you go. And I wouldn't worry too much about going into a gym, everyone in there has been exactly where you were, and if it's a good gym everyone is usually really accomodating and friendly. Boxers in general have a habit of being humble, as taking punches and giving them in the ring gives you a sense of humilty that most people don't understand or ever attain.

I box once a week, it's a great addition to my workouts and is excellent for full body exercise.

I boxed as a younger man in the golden gloves. I've notices a low rent training center open up close to the house, down in little Mexico. ~ I've wanted to drop in and have a look about.

At 59, I think my boxing days are over however. ~ I'm torn with the notion.

Good luck to you and keep your guard up and your feet a dancing.

My GF directed me to this thread. I fought as an amateur lightweight in my late 20's.

I checked your profile to see where you live. I go to the gym to workout but I don't fight anymore...I'm 54 years old.

Yeah, I think it is a good workout. There should be box fit or executive boxing classes available to you.

Find a real gym if you can. Women fight out of our gym. If you feel inclined to take it that far.

Or you may want eventually to spar. Research the gym and the trainer.

You can google Pep Boxing. Tony Pep. He has a web site. Might give you a "feel" for the subculture.

You might get more than good muscle tone. There is a lot to learn. Good luck.

I used to box a bit myself, and it's amazing... all the gyms I went to, it was never a requirement to compete if you didn't want to.... although if you choose to compete you're going to push yourself harder and see more of the results you want....

If you're intimidated by the gyms.... you could always work out at home...
http://how-to-box.com/ is probably the best boxing site ever....

If you can't afford a lot of gear... you can always DIY.... I used to use a US army duffle bag full of whatever cloth I could fit into it for a heavy bag.... gloves you can get for 20 dollars and under and hand wraps are maybe five bucks....

boxing..greatest sport ever..being an ex pugilist myself i must say it is one of the most demanding fitness sports in the world..and is very hard..but is excellent for getting and keeping fit..and as a bonus.. is also a very very effective self defence method..good luck and enjoy..

Boxing is loads of fun and there are plenty of gyms where you can train w/o any pressure to compete, or even to spar.

Try to find a gym that has REAL bags though, I mean bags that hang from the ceiling not the "Wavemaster" free-standing ones that wobble on water-filled bases that many health clubs have.

I'd also recommend doing kickboxing (sometimes goes by "Muay Thai" or "Thai boxing") rather than classical boxing because having to use your legs will make it a much more intense and efficient workout as far as calories burned per minute goes. Plus learning how to use your knees and elbows is invaluable as a practical self-defense skill.

The least useful would be the kind of "cardio kickboxing" class where you just punch and kick the air. You want a place where you're working with bags or pads, so that you're always striking against resistance.

I am :) Went tonight and I can tell in just a couple of weeks almost that I am improving each day pushing myself to get a harder workout. Its definitely not an easy workout, but its one of those that when you leave you know you worked your arse off!

Just curious but was your boxing class really a boxing class or an aerobic boxing workout? Is the person teaching the class actually a Boxer or is it a trainer that thinks he has some boxing knowledge. I ask because at my Gym there is a trainer who runs his clients through a pseudo boxing workout they jump rope, do crunches and other ab work which was fine but when they got to the actual punching and foot work it was a joke....the guy had no idea what he was doing and was obviously not a boxer...

The guy is a professional boxer. I have to do the footwork and correct punching. I don't do it at a gym; its a boxing club.

Have you tried kickboxing classes yet ? They are a blast and burn tons of calories , get you fit and teach you self defense moves . Also great because you are usually with a group of women which can make you feel really comfortable . i have been going for around 3 months now and can't wait for my next class ! By the way I am now more fit and have a better body than I had 20 years ago . I do also go to the gym around 4 times a week to work out with weights .
