What's the worst or most inappropriate gift you ever received?
Posted: 9/22/2009 3:58:33 AM
My family are champions when it comes to inappropriate or 'strange' gifts. Last Christmas I was given a very expensive Dart Board and cabinet, except that I don't and never have played darts, and live in a unit. When I worked in the Wine Industry one bought me a $5 bottle for one birthday knowing that I had access to many great wines at cost. After many years as a photographer I once got a 'set' of mini photo frames that look like they came straight from the $2 shop. I mean that's like buying Jackson Pollock a water colour paint set from the toy shop or a colouring book.

As much as I hate shopping I do try to buy gifts that 'fit' the person and have some thought behind them. Although we did for many years in the family of 4 boys 'pass around' a gift set of Brut 33 as a timeless dud gift. I think we lost it some time ago so have now replaced it with a shiney tasteless silver photo frame. I gifted it to my brother last Christmas with the challenge for him to pass it on without the receiver knowing until they opened it! What have you been given by family or friends that you smiled about at the time but couldn't wait to dump?

An x-boyfriend once gave me a belated birthday gift, men's bedroom slippers; I thought it was a joke and dug deeper inside the slippers to see if he had slipped a real gift inside them like maybe a bracelet or some other jewelry only to find nothing inside them....needless, to say, I ended up recycling them and gave them to my son's dad for Christmas......

I got given a porno mag for my 18th. (coz an 18yo male doesn't already have like a million of them by this stage....)
Was obviously an outdated one from a newsagent... as it had the barcode cut out of the top of it, and the cut marks had gone all the way through the magazine.... Nice

My ex didn't often remember my birthday so one year I reminded him several weeks beforehand that it was coming up. On the day he gave me a card in an envelope and there was a small lump inside the card and I thought (gasp) he's brought me a gift. It turned out to be a chocolate frog.

Freddo frogs, chuppa chups...I am writing all these gift ideas down. This is gold! Can't wait to see the look of joy on my friends' and family's faces this Christmas. I normally give 'em nothin'.

A friend of my wife once gave me an egg timer for christmas.

My wife thought it was funny and told her friend that somehow I didn't have much use for an egg timer as I had cooked enough eggs to tell when they are cooked.

So now the timer is sitting on a shelf somewhere gathering dust.

Herpes?

Whoaa! That's refreshingly candid of you, though probably ill advised?

I was going to say it was refreshingly candida of you, but I thought it might make you thrush with embarrassment. Or crabby.

I laughed my arse off when I saw a sticker on the wall in a movie (I think it was a Chevy Chase flick) that said " I Love (love symbolized in a heart figure) Pit Bulls.
I was over the top in hilarity so much (used to smoke the green back then and a geeky friend of mine had 2 pit bulls) that someone gave me a personalized in raised velvet lettering t-shirt that had emblazzoned "I LOVE PIT BULLS" on the front. The weird thing was they weren't even there at the movie and had to hear it in the forth of fifth person so it must have still been funny to transend that far to have a t-shirt made. Had to carefully choose my destinations to wear it but I wore it out in a few years.

There were many from my new sister in law . She excelled at finding unbelievably funny gifts which were meant to be useful objects . We in my family never made eye contact when we unwrapped one of her Xmas presents , but the Xmas that topped them all it was my turn to unwrap and it was an unidentifiable at first glance wooden thing with a dog's head ... OK so far so good but then we realised it had toothpicks sticking out of it . The choking coughs of strangled laughter got way out of hand that Xmas . I mean you would have to search hard for a wooden dog toothpick holder .

Ahhhhh the memories come flooding back. I'll prob have to go back into therapy now. Why did I start this?

I had a thing for smarties as a kid, loved them. So it became a challenge over the years to disguise smarties as various other things for Christmas. I think the best one was a garden rake. I was sus at the outset as I don't have a garden. But then found a flat pack of smarties and a long filled tube. I recently had a 'significant' birthday and got 50 packs of smarties. Took weeks to eat them all!!

Then there is the memory of those paper mache Giraffe's from a (now Ex) girlfriends strange Aunt. I remember she was coming to visit so we had to dig them out of the cupboard and put them on display until she left. Had to make sure we were in the Will now didn't we!

I got a taxidermied toad once as a thankyou gift............most revolting thing I had ever clapped eyes on. Worst part was when I got it (thoughtfully still in its giftshop bag) the words said to me was 'When we saw it, it reminded us of you'

yup done the brut 33 prezzie as a joke Xmas prezzy. Boxing day, snowing, leaning out of 2nd floor flat window BF and I heavily merry, lightly sprinkling the bus queue with talc etc....wonder if anyone noticed the snow smelt foul that day. One girl friend gave me a revolting gold painted plate that we both remember her opening the year before and I passed it on to someone else the next year..am wondering if the plate will ever get out of its box. The Bunnings woman's face was priceless......my 34ishth birthday....drill, sander, router, yard rule, mitre saw...and when placed in the bag my ex gave it to me saying Happy Birthday...she was genuinely shocked, I was DELIGHTED and they are ALL MINE>>>>>rubs hands with glee.

Same BF of Brut 33 reknown once bought me a saucy little black lace number. Usually he had great taste in underwear so delightedly I tried it on and came out laughing my non existant tits off....."you bought this because the pic showed a busty sexy blonde didn't you? He was a bit sheepish and agreed that he had not thought what I would look like in it....sad..sooooo sad. what a waste of $200.
