Do not let yourself fall into one of the stupid stereotypes that so many like to set up. You are as old or as young as you feel and this is also a function of how well you've taken care of yourself. Not everyone ages the same. Some are old at 45 and some at 85 (or maybe older, look at Roberta McCain) Me, I turned 59 this past May 30 th, whats the difference now compared to when I was 25? I'm a lot wiser and much physically stronger.

Life should move relatively slower as we move into the retirement years. I would hazard a guess that time may even go only half as fast as it used to.

Then in Sextagenarian years, your just turning 30 again !

Sounds like you laugh a lot (lol lol) that will keep you young!

Really, I think we all have good days, and bad days, no matter how old we are, but much of it is taking care of yourself and your attitude. Sometimes we have to work hard and I think aging does have unavoidable effects. Maybe we need to learn to work with those changes, rather than against them, i.e., age gracefully. To me some of that has to with acceptance, after all, you can't change the fact you get older, but you do have control over how you deal with it.

No, 59 is 59 ... I hate to hear references as "the new" this or that. 59 is 59. Last year you were 58. Next year you will be 60. The year after that you will be 61. I hate when people refer to their age negatively. It just sounds so doom and gloom. No one likes to be around doom and gloom people. If you think it is gloomy then it will be. How about saving up for something special - a trip, a new wardrobe, learn to speak another language and engage in that culture, etc. etc. - anything but sitting around and wondering if aging is gloomy. I plan on learning a new language and visiting a different country sometime in the next couple of years after pursuing to c ontinue my education and be skilled enough to stay employed in the upcoming years. I don't think you are in such ill health because you are taking care of someone else. Enjoy what you have and not what is impossible to achieve!

I am 64, so a 59 year old woman sounds just perfect to me. Too bad, you live in a different country.

I just turned 59 yesterday
Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!
I remember that fear when I turn 40, in a couple years I will be 50....all these round numbers are scary, but really it's not about numbers, it's about your attitude

It's not about how old are you, but about how young you feel....enjoy your life and don't count numbers!!!

happy 59th birthday...
i beat you to it by just 3 weeks...
i'm going overseas again soon...i'm not planning on slowing down any time soon... i've got too many things to do and people to meet.

nobody likes to get older...but the alternative isn't much of a choice.
should you roll over and die?
now that's a thought...lol

you know,
you're probably going to meet the same people and do the same things you did yesterday...

if this is a depressing thought maybe you can change what you do and who you see...

just might make all the difference to you...

Happy happy birthday.

I turned 60 in August -- shocked my own self! But, here's the deal - I don't think about how many years are left, only about what I'm going to do next that's fun or interesting or novel or educational - or all of those things at once. I'm soooo much more into learning and talking some intelligent talk as well as doing outrageous things than I wouldn't have done in the past. Please revel in your age and the license to lose the self-conciousness of youth. I'm loving being older, honest. I think I want to travel with Daff and shock the pants off the men we encounter!!

Ready, Daff??

Bruce Springsteen is turning 60 tomorrow! Me, I'm doing it in a few months. It's just numbers and time has a way of contracting and expanding. Days last forever sometimes, months disappear, it's always changing.

Turn on your favorite rock and roll, loud, and dance. Happy Birthday!

Take a gander at Tina Turner -- Zoooweeee!!!

You can't change the chronological years, but with proper nutrition, a good outlook on life, etc. you can certainly beat the odds!

I've seen women, and men, in their 50s, who look like they looked 78 when they were 35. I think it's in the face and disposition, but I don't know.

...I'd give anything to have legs like Tina Turner. She looks fabulous.

Yup, I look in the mirror and think .... "Gosh almighty, now doesn't that lady staring back at me look exactly like my mother."

OP...aging isn't the greatest thing in the world - but the alternative is worse now isn't it?

I'm not sure what it is, but the numbers clicking every onward haven't really bothered me in a long time. Laugh, I laugh at myself - but the really tough birthday for me was - 25!!! Of course, I was absolutely miserable at that point in my life, so I think that had a lot to do with it. 40 didn't bother me, and 45 is coming in October, and I couldn't care less...so at some point maybe another one will get me, but I don' think so.

Happy belated birthday Ms. swcarolinej........

but its just 59 sounds like old to me

Well, I just turned 61, five days ago........Then, how the heck do you think 61 sounds? I was eliminated from most mens search parameters 5 days ago........
Does this mean I'm doomed? Not on your life!!! There are benefits to aging.
For instance, I'm so much smarter than I was 10 years ago. I'm living a fuller life, with less regret than even 20 years ago. My legs are still great for an old broad.......!!!!!!

Don't fritter away your days worrying about aging. Get out there and live............
and have an extra piece of birthday cake. You deserve it!

59 is the birthday to practice for 60, which without having got a feel of it a year in advance would come way too hard. The countdown begins.

You think you have it bad. This summer I turned 50. Wait until you are faced with that! Half a century, five decades, two generations, the letter L. It's so bad in so many ways I wonder that I can still get up in the morning (yes, I can, by the way, and any other time of day, heh heh). 59 is easy. Wait until you hit 50.

See, what you do is get yourself a copy of Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5". That's a novel. The Main Man is Billy Pilgrim. He hops around his life from one time to another without following the usual chronological progression. One day he is young, the next old, then back to middle age, then old again then young again and even with that freedom from linearity he still manages to have all of the usual experiences of life, from wearing silver boots to wearing a white lab coat to mating with a starlet under a biosphere canopy.

"If what Billy Pilgrim learned from the Tralfamadorians is true, that we will all live forever, no matter how dead we may sometimes seem to be, I am not overjoyed. Still--if I am going to spend eternity visiting this moment and that, I'm grateful that so many of those moments are nice."

LOL! The only time I ever felt old was when my niece had her first baby. I thought OMG, I'm a great aunt! And my sister is a grandmother! I was in my early 30s then.

Hasn't bothered me since - except for a brief hiccup when one of my great nieces had a baby... guess that makes me a great-great aunt. So silly, really, to keep track of numbers.

lmao I was a aunt when I was born and then a great aunt at 20 so I know what you mean Kari!

Age is a good thing...it keeps us humble. Some people look at it as how much life they still have to live, I look at some and think how much life do they still have in them.

Hope you enjoyed your special day.

I know I don't feel on top of the world like I did at 35, but heck, I am still digging life. I think that is the most important thing, to enjoy your ride.

My mom was talking about her deceased husband yesterday. He was 11 years younger than she is. He always acted or seemed older than she did. He was stuck in his ways and didn't want to try anything new. Perhaps not feeling your age is half the battle to living a long and healthy life?

A very happy birthday to you and have a wonderful year.

I'm not far behind you. I'll be 59 at the end of November. Actually, I am looking forward to the future so much. I feel no different inside than I did when I was much younger. I do have some physical problems, but I'll deal with them. There is so much to still do and enjoy in this life. Now is the perfect time in which to do it.

I have a friend who is 94 and he played tennis into his mid-80's. He considers me quite a young woman. It's all relative. I don't feel old, therefore I am NOT.

After thinking about it for a bit, there is one thing I no longer do because of my age. I don't do rescue for the exotic hookbills anymore. It simply isn't fair to a creature that has an average lifespan of 40 to 70 years, a living being that bonds with it's person. I have one left, and it took him nearly 15 years to get past his first owner's dying. He's about 24-25 new, and when I can't take care of him any longer, he'll go into a sanctuary so he doesn't get passed along from one person to another who won't have the patience to deal with him.

I find the easiest thing is simply to think of my dad as old, that way I am always at least 23 years from being old. He is nearly 86 so I have lots to look forward to. To Phoebe, the only reason you are not in my search parameters is distance certainly not age.

And I'd like to be one of those men.

As to aging, Rodney Dangerfield got it right when he said:

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Okay, okay he was quoting Dylan Thomas.
