| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/22/2009 3:11:33 PM | With all the extreme grant cutbacks on childrens sports.... Wildlife rescue organizations.... The arts etc......
How do you feel about Crown Corporations buying executive suites for Executives during the Olympics. Granted they say they are for customers etc but still? The taxpayer will eventually get the bill........all 1.6 million of it and counting.
Right or wrong? | |

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/22/2009 4:22:18 PM | What I wonder is if we have the referendum again voting for or against the Olympics, what would be the results be? I think it has gone way over budget and we are now in a recession. Also, it is an El Nino year.
Having said this, Canada Line is impressive and has led me to believe we need a subway system in Vancouver.

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/22/2009 5:39:26 PM | BCers should have done the research, what a H*ll of a mess to leave your kids. By the way when did the olympics turn pro for crying out loud. Oh yea when it turned big buisness! | |
|
| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/22/2009 6:13:25 PM | No, I voted for the Olympics in the referendum but I wonder if it was held today how people would vote. Would most people vote in favor of the Olympics if it was held today?
If you cannot contribute to a thread in a meaninful way, dont. DFS - your post is brilliant compared to someone elses.

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/22/2009 6:42:00 PM | The Provincial Government cutbacks come from one budget and the Crown Corporation expenditures come from another source (insurance premiums, etc.) All Government spending ultimately is with money contributed by the taxpayer by its very nature.
Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure you will) but are not Crown Corporations mandated to break even each year? If they have a surplus and choose to buy an Olympic suite with the excess, can they not use this as a tax deduction for promotional expenses the following year and theoretically get more money back? I'm only familiar with how ICBC works but I'm sure other Crown Corporations function similarly. I can't imagine they would authorize this kind of expense without it having some additional benefit for them at some future point.

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/22/2009 6:42:45 PM | And here I thought most would be outraged.....
Initially, these games were were voted on with a 600 million dollar budget, and passed. We know now it's in the billions, add the whistler hwy to the mix, the convention center, the actual cost of security etc etc....... We could be looking at a 5-6 billion dollar bill......... Add on these new hidden costs for the elite and well..........
I've seen misleading a few times in my life but this is a doozie.

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/23/2009 9:48:27 AM | Add in all the employess of provincial crown corporations and provincial govt agencies that are getting time off with pay to 'volunteer' at the Games.
how many volunteers get time off with pay?.... hell those are my tax dollars!
Transit is looking at a toll on bridges and hiking up taxes......why the hell are they paying staff to take time off to be so called 'volunteers' at the Olympics?
|
| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/23/2009 9:53:39 AM | why the hell are they paying staff to take time off to be so called 'volunteers'
Because they can't get enough, by far, authentic suckers, erm volunteers( UNPAID WORKERS), to support this enormously financially oversupported venture!

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/23/2009 1:23:59 PM | ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I call BS on that!
the Gov't workers are not picking up garbage and standing outside for hours in the freezing cold guarding urinals or dumpsters.... they are given plum 'volunteer' jobs.
If Joe/Jill Public Volunteer were to get a chance at these nifty indoor, opening ceremony, hockey games, figure skating venue positions hell ya there would be no shortage on the books.
Check with Vanoc... you will see there is more than plenty pple who have sent in their names.... most of the nobodies got grunt jobs offered to them with little or no flexibility, no nice choices.......thus they walked away rejected or disgusted.
No... I have not sent in my name to volunteer....I volunteer at my church, my kids schools, in my community.... I didn't see a need to get involved in the hoopla.

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/23/2009 8:59:36 PM | El Nino is here. We broke another temperature record today --- 28 degrees. Will there be enough snow? Because it is not cheap to make and move. H1N1 is slowly creeping into our schools. Will the pandemic be over by the time of the Olympics?
I resent the deception that has gone into this event. The Olympics is truly an elitist event and obscenely costly. If people were rational, they would not support it. We would give all the money we are wasting to developing countries but the world is all messed up so we will not be doing what is the right thing to do. We could start at home and give all the homeless clean beds to sleep in but no . . . the world is just not like that.
However, few of us are rational, reasonable and/or sensible these days. I think having the Olympics here is exciting in a shameful kind of way. This may be the irrational news junkie speaking in me.

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/23/2009 11:35:01 PM | | I was against the Olympics at first, and some of this "news" comes as a shock. Our town had some arts programs sponsored by the Olympic Legacy Fund this past summer. | |

And here I thought most would be outraged.....
It is an outrage...and what is even more outrageous is that people supported this endeavor at all. Whatever made them believe the crap that the self serving politicians were spewing forth in the first place.
WTF is up with that??
And to then in retrospect get choked......like ya didnt see the train comin cuz you were blinded by the light?
Man, oh man.........I wasnt going to comment.....but I just couldnt help myself!
What is that saying? I see stupid people....they're everywhere, they're everywhere!!

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/28/2009 10:19:10 PM | | Absolutely wrong. I don't believe they will be for just customers or for any of the regular public as I have also heard. In these times, crown corporations should not be spending any money on tickets or suites for executives. The government is just putting us further in debt which to me is why BC is in the financial trouble in the first week. Those damn Olympics are going to be the death of BC. This is going to be a negative legacy just the way Montreal was. I can see no benefit from the Olympics at all and especially at the time that the world is in it's most financial distress ever. | |

| 1.5 million in Olympic perks....... Posted: 9/28/2009 10:23:37 PM | | Ironic how the government is cutting back grants on childrens sports, so that in the future we will not have future athletes to be able to participate in Olympic games as our own Olympic games have destroyed the future of so many of our children. What a shame, they should be so ashamed of themselves. I don't know how they can hold up there heads in public and think it is okay to make cutbacks like they have. It is just so unfair, indecent and just so not right. Our government needs a good kick in the ass and then some! | |
