So, ladies, when you're dating a guy, what hobbies of his give you second thoughts?

Of primary interest here to me are "nerdy" hobbies, like Dungeons and Dragons, video games (RPGs and the like), DDR (that thing where you jump on the pad to arrows on the screen while music plays), reading, excessive computer "hacking" (programming, tinkering, et cetera), and the like.

What does this make you think about the guy in question, and does it affect your perception of him in a negative way (he's childish, he's maladjusted, he's not cool enough, whatever)? Are there other noteworthy examples?

Not that I have a vested interest in this question (cough). I, uh, spend all my time wrestling bears and hewing wood.

Unless you're skinning cats for fun, I can't think of any hobbies that would send me running. It's more if it consumes all your time that it bugs me. My ex would come home from work and spend five hours playing World of Warcraft. That was not okay.

Believe it or not, there are more girls/women getting interested in those things every day.

But I agree with the above, unless your hobby is obsessive, then it's not too big of an issue.

and LOL@skinning cats hahaha

Having sex with strangers is generally viewed as a bad hobby.
So is stalking celebrities.
Trying to acquire the largest porn collection, ditto.
And for some reason, women think decorating with a Barney the Dinosaur motif is a poor choice.

Hobbies that I would be morally opposed to.

As for being "nerdy", my boyfriend is into these things, while I am not. It does not say anything bad about him to me. Only that we compromise on what we do together and that as much as we love each other, we don't have to spend every moment together.

Hobbies I find are a turn off:
Cars. (I don't get it, I hate cars because of the environment and such)
Extremely interested in sports. (can't do it)
War/the military/etc
Conspiracy theories.
Anime/manga
pop culture

the list could go on. But those are the big ones for me.

if your going to hate cars because of the environment then you must hate everything, because everything man made is hurting it. Also even stuff that isnt man made that we use travels by truck, trains, airplanes. So unless you live in a place that dosnt have power and eat food that you grow and dont use man made products then you can say that you hate cars because they are bad for the environment

It's a little disappointing that reading has gotten to the level of "maladjusted," "not cool enough," etc. So I'll answer with this: The first bad sign is when a guy isn't confident about his own hobbies.

The only time I have an issue with anyone's hobby is if it takes over thier life. If someone neglects thier responsibilities due to it, I will be turned off. Other than that, do whatever you enjoy, harm no one.

Yes poster. Your hobbies are turn offs to ME. I think they are really nerdy and weird- and by your post, you seem to think they are as well! However, it doesn't matter what I think because these are YOUR hobbies!!! If this is what you love to do- then do it. You will find a girl who will play Dungeons and Dragons with you in the woods or jump on DDR all night!

I think a lot of women would be afraid to respond due to your hobby of "excessive computer hacking".

There have been threads on similar things gaming and such. But I agree with the previous posters thus far.

a hobby that would be forced onto me ...if he's into gaming --then cool...I'm not. As long as I'm expected to take on his likes/dislikes then all is good. I don't mind sharing interests and trying new things at all; in fact , that is really fun. But, if he wants to game, then maybe I'll curl up with a book next to him..or maybe I'll go and ride my bike in the mountains.
Unless his hobbies are internet sex and scoping out the babes on dating sites or drinking the blood of puppies or small children...there really aren't any that would be a turn off --so long as it's understood they're 'his' and not necessarily mine.

Everyone will have different answers. For me: murder, kidnapping, brutalizing small animals, world of war craft, and dungeons and dragons will send me packing.

What the first lady said. Leave video games out of your profile. Even if you’re a casual gamer, she'll never believe you.

Also, don't mention computer hacking. As an IT major, I understand what you mean. But the rest of the world thinks criminal. Computer Programming is just as accurate and makes you sound smarter than the average.

D&D = games/card games in your interest lists. If she assumes it means monopoly on a rainy night, so be. The point is your being honest.

As long as that stuff doesn't take up your entire life, then it really doesn't need to come out until after a couple of dates anyway. And if she doesn't like that, then send her packing. Don't forget to remind her to take all of those Romantic Comedies that you didn't care to sit through with her as well.

IMO, you should not omit hobbies, interests, or pursuits that are important to you; and wordsmithing the things you love into more benign versions in order to appeal to a wider audience is fine if one is just looking to casually date and make new friends, but your profile states you’re looking for long term. So, wouldn’t it be great to find a compatible gal who also enjoys DDR, RPGs, science fiction, et al (they DO exist)? If you think so, then I think you should gear your profile more toward your target audience instead of trying to please the majority. Additionally, if you’re honest in your profile, then you don’t have to send anyone “packing” if they feel you were misleading, or if they are less than accepting when you “come out” of the gamer, sci-fi guy closet.

No hobby is a turn off for a woman who shares the same passion. I'd love a nice nerdy game of D&D. The only two things I miss about my ex husband are having an appreciative person to cook for and the fact that he was a fantastic DM.

Some of us are looking for gamer geeks!

Personally, I don't want to see camping or hunting :)

I agree on the pornography not being a great hobby or anything addictive...for some obvious reasons guns and knives would make me not really interested but hunting or paint balling (sometimes) wouldn't creep me out, under the belt tattoos (on private parts) would give me a creepy factor. video gaming is an alright hobby just as long as a girl can game with him, be included and it doesn't overrule life real world happenings. There's a lot of women can enjoy and pick up a hobby guy has on a whim. As long as it is interesting to them, they get to know you better and want to be included in your life.

If I found those things a turn off, I wouldn't mention that i'm a nerd and post pics of me in star wars stuff, lol. I need someone to share at least a bit of my childish fun loving side and be into some of the same silly stuff so we can enjoy it together.

Things I find that put me off: hunting, racing cars/trucks/boats, anything NASCAR, swingers, guys who spend more time in the gym than with me (when we're pretty serious). Super picky eaters, close mindedness, tattoos as a past time.

But that's just me, lots of girls I know are into those things and not into the stuff I like in a guy, we are all different :)
