I am reading the book The Law of Attraction.
Basically in a nutshell it says that you get what you think about.

It says that if you focus on something and also combine those thoughts with
a happy emotional state you will recieve what you are thinking about.
Also if you worry or fear getting something bad you will get it.
Even negative thoughts and emotions will bring you that which you think about.
So when you have bad thoughts about something you need to change your
thoughts to something that you want that makes you happy.

Has anyone experienced this working? Anyone read this book?
Your opinions?

And as far as people go, it says you think about what you like about them and never think about what you don't like about them.

So if you meet someone who is rich but sick you think about how they are rich and never think about how they are sick.
I like this part.

I am wondering how much control I do have over my thoughts though.
I am finding that I have more control than I thought actually.

I saw the movie, it was good. You should also watch the movie "What the bleep do you know". It gives you the physics on it.

This is called manifesting. Does it work. Oh hell yes!!! Just be careful what you wish for and BE SPECIFIC!

You will atract what you are thinking.

Soldierbyte ,,, No one said that you didn't need to work towards acheiving your goals.

A person can wish for things without getting off their ass to go get what they want..
They will end up with nothing..

If you want something or someone and are willing to go after what you want , you will have much more luck in attracting what you want...

If you " SEE " yourself acheiving what you want , you can and will do all the right things to get what you want..
If you see yourself failing , you will fail...

simple as that !!!

I've read the book and, when I'm going through difficult times, times when I'm having difficulty keeping my thoughts positive and towards my goals.. I watch the movie to reinforce it's message. Thoughts are energy so, use your energy for good positive outcomes.

Yes, i've experienced it working when thinking both positively and negatively.
Thank you for reminding me, Op .. as the author says: "Thoughts are energy, choose good ones."

Yeah, they have something like that in the Bible...
" For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. " Proverbs 23 : 7

The book"As a Man Thinketh" was published in 1902. The premise is that the soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that which it loves, and also that which it fears.

The Secret is nothing new.

The law of attraction, yes...a universal law!
We are what we think about all day.
Thoughts are real things.
We have the power to alter our thinking patterns when we need to.

Ever notice how this doesn't work for chidren being raped/tortured/murdered even though they are putting all their emotions into one plea? Or how it doesn't work...well you know, it doesn't work unless you are doing something that can make the outcome the same even if you didn't spend a bunch of money on books and movies of people making a buck off your need to be told the obvious.

When I sold cars for Ford I worked with a guy who read a bunch of crap like that. He never sold anything. Me, who does not read that kind of stuff, did just fine. It's not what you think, it's what you do. Some people need to think a certain way to perform a certain way, others of us just know what needs to get done and do it whether it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy or not.

C'mon guys and girls,

Let's get real here. There is nothing magical going on here. Obviously the more you think about something in a positive way, the more your efforts will be directed towards reaching that "thing" whether it is conscious or not. Conversely, the more you think about something in a negative way, the more your efforts will be directed at avoiding that "thing."

Example:

a) I really really want to go to Disneyworld because it is so much fun and there's so much to do. Also, the weather is so nice and the family would really love it.

b) I really really want to go to Disneyworld, but it's so expensive, it will be really crowded, and I don't think I could take the time off work.

Which one is more likely to end up in Disneyworld having a great time? To me it's pretty obvious.

Obviously, for those of you saying you want money or a meaningful relationship, the very act of just sitting there waiting for it to come to you is negative in itself. Think about it, what you're mind is processing is "I want a million dollars, but I don't want to do anything for it." For those of you that aren't rocket scientists, logic says that if you aren't willing to get up off your ass and chase something, than you must not really want it.

Pretty basic stuff.

You're right.. absolutely nothing magical about it at all. The book merely reminds us of the laws of the Universe, gives us tools to keep focused at directing our positive thoughts and energies towards our goals/wants/needs etc.

I don't recall anyone saying they expect to sit there and things will automatically just come to us.

I'm confused. You seem to be advocating the teachings in the book, but at the same time you seem to be skeptical of it.??? Have you read the book?

Pretty basic stuff.
Yep, it is.

Actually it does sound magical, the way the authors describe it.
They say you are creating your reality with your thoughts, good or bad.
The universe is shaping itself to conform with what you are thinking about.

I haven't read anywhere in the book, and I am halfway through it, anything about
exactly how your desire for wealth, for instance, will materialize. It does not mention
whether it will fall out of the sky or if you will simply decide to work harder and smarter.

It does say not to horde your money. If you want a certain car and have the money to buy it, do it instead of thinking that you should save your money. It says that
the money to buy what you want will always be there if you follow this method.
That sounds foolish to me. The authors say that to not buy the car means that you are worrying that you won't have enough money, which will cancel out more money coming to you. That's a huge leap of faith.

Here is what I've gotten out of it so far that I like. It is good to be able to consciously direct my thoughts toward things that make me happy. It sounds like a good habit to get into.

It's sounds more spiritual and mystical than magical to me... but actually it's simply the power of positive thinking, ..

I read this ages ago, and my recollection is a bit sketchy, but it makes sense to me. I don't know how all of it works, but it does seem that on the whole, we get out what we put into the universe.

As to the example about the car- it does seem counterintuitive, but this is how I see it: one of the big things that keeps us from just about anything is fear. If you have the money, but don't buy the car because you worry that you then won't have the money, you are operating on the premise that you won't get more money. That's a negative approach not necessarily based in reality. If you were able to get enough money for a car, what's keeping you from duplicating that, or doing better? I guess the better approach is: I can afford this car, and I will buy it because I can replace what I spend.

You really just have to look around this site to see how people constantly sabotage themselves with that fear. Fear that they'll never meet anyone, fear that they'll meet the wrong person, fear that the right person will leave them, and on and on. With all of those fears in the forefront, it's hard to see how anyone could be positive, emotionally available and secure enough for a successful relationship.

What it boils down to for me is: a lot of crap happens that we just don't have any control over. Rather than letting that stuff turn me into a defeated, unhappy person, it just seems better to turn what I can into positives, and move on from the other stuff as quickly as possible.

the secret kind of bummed me out because it was too mystical, it made it seem like all you had to do was have a positive mental attitude (PMA) and visualize, so i failed at first. Then I began to read other books that explained the science of autosuggestion and the effect it can have on ones brain, then their outlook on life, which causes them to act differently. When I read the science behind it I realized it can work, but only with faith and persistence. If you liked the secret but are skeptical try reading more cut and dry books about the subject and the facts behind it's workings. I suggest:

Think & Grow Rich
by Napoleon Hill

and

The 7 Habits of Highly Succesful People
by Stephen R. Covey

it turns the ideas from mystical to science.

I just watched What the Bleep do We Know and it was excellent on this subject.

It gives an explanation for this with support from the field of quantum physics.
Reality isn't there except as we observe it. Matter isn't solid. Nothing exists
except in our thoughts.

OP, I've read your posting history and know how torn up you were about your situation. My heart goes out to you and I just want you to know you're not alone.

As far as the book goes, "The Secret" doesn't say anymore than what you have the ability to do yourself. If you throw negative thoughts out in the universe then chances are you'll receive negative results. We're all connected in some way by positive and negative energy and some collision is inevitable in the grand scheme of things. If your thought process is geared in a positive way then naturally you'll put yourself in situations that won't evoke stress and despair. On the flip side, if your life is filled with negative thoughts, then your actions will subconsciously feed on those thoughts propelling you into a downward spiral.

This is just my opinion OP, but like Dorothy in the "Wizard of Oz" you've always possessed the power to have what you desire...you just have to believe it yourself.
