ADMIN: city is not appearing in profilesPage 1 of 2    (1, 2)
Hi,

It seems that there was a change in the script for viewing profiles sometime today, so the city is now showing up blank for all users, and the ethnicity and hair color has moved to the other column. I believe this will be a big issue for a lot of us who live in large states, or major metro areas where someone who lives 30 miles across town is actually two hours or more away.

Thank you for your attention to this.

I just viewed a few profiles. City contained valid values. Ethnicity too.

Yep - city is NOT showing up on the new profile pages. It gives the state in the field that says "City".

Every single one I've looked in my area suffers from this issue.

The 'lead-in' pages do not suffer from this issue. Lead in pages correctly show the city location - but the actual profile does not display the city name.

What is the distinction between new profile pages and "lead-in?" How do you guys get to these problematic profiles?

I've viewed a number of actual profiles and the city, ethnicity, etc. looks good.

a lead-in page is like the new user page listing new users, no-emails, or Favorites - these normally show the city.

I think this "may be" a farm issue - as in server farm - depending on which server you are on - the problem may not be evident to all users - just my two cents, could any number of reasons why its only affecting some users such as myself and the OP. But IMHO it sounds like the code base hasnt fully propogated.

If you need a for example page to view - I can post the URL (if thats legal on here)

Like you suggested, it must be related to the server you're hitting. I just went to "search" and took the links for new users, not viewed yet and users with no emails. City and ethnicity looked ok to me. (Assuming I understand the problem you guys are describing.).

Difference found: Ok -- all the aspx pages seem to show the city (tho i havent checked all the variations) - but its the HTM pages that havent updated.

For example - click either "I Viewed" or "Viewed Me" -- these link to the HTM page (memberNNNNNNNN.htm#in) where N= a member number

Other areas that link to the "viewprofile.aspx" URL do not have this issue.

Hope this helps

Viewing a profile through "I Viewed" and "Viewed Me" show city and ethnicity for me. (?)

Mark are you viewing the pages in Firefox? I just tested in Firefox and viola' - city names are there.

Notably - I just ran the same profiles via Internet Explorer (my default) and the profiles now seem to be working correctly.

Call me crazy - the issue seems to be fixed at least partially, for me anyways for now.

(hmm was somebody muckin with the code while we were discussin this??)

gonna throw this back to a server propogation issue -- looks like updates are being distributed

Seems to be a non-issue now (keeping fingers crossed)

Yes. I should have tried IE to see if it behaved differently. Browsers treat caching instructions differently. Possibly IE didn't expire copies of a .htm file as early as Firefox does. But, it's probably what you suggested about multiple servers, and someone doing a little "development on the fly" on the server you hit. :)

It seems to be the same regardless of browser type.

It does show common cities (in use by more than one member) everywhere

It does not show cities names posted by only one user in the newly formatted profile page.

It does show those single used cities in other pages, searches, favorites etc..

Browser independent, apparently

I agree, it seems to be browser independant. It looks like its affecting about half the profiles I view.

Also, on some of the profiles where I could click on a city (I guess the ones where a city was popular), those are no longer links (again, for those few profiles that the city actually displays), and are thus unclickable.

An hour or so ago I began seeing profile pages where the formatting is messed up. It's not in a tabular format. All the values (like city name) fall below the caption, like there is a line break between the caption and value.

Ok, I'll through another wrench into these gears. The profiles I was looking at earlier were all six or seven digit member numbers. What I've been getting for about the last hour and a half is that if the member number is greater than 14 mil, they display OK, but the older ones are not.
I'm wondering if it might also have something to do with when the profile was last updated.
I checked my own, and the city isn't showing up on there, either, even though I just made a change in it the other day. And on my box, it doesn't matter whether I'm using an HTM or ASPX URL.

I am beginning to wonder if it is a some other kind of issue. There is no ryhme or reason - but its definitely an issue and NEEDS FIXED.

This and the fact that the distances are now really whacked (more so than before) is making the site almost useless to locate nearby interests. Buy hey its free - one gets what one pays for i guess.

Are paid members seeing a similiar issue?

I am uncertain but think there used to be a comma between city and province/state. Currently the comma does not appear.

This may not be significant where each is only a one-word name, but both my city and province are two words and the lack of the comma is more noticeable.

BTW I've restored the original subject line in accordance with the rules against changing them.

Someone just made me aware that that is the case on my profile. It only shows 'California' as city. When I try to edit, it correctly shows the city as Richmond. But it doesn't appear that way in my profile.

It is not more then just the state name appearing where the city name is should appear, its also screwing up who is showing up in your who's online and wh0 has been online. Until recently when I logged on POF only showed me personals limited to the distance I selected(50-75miles). Now they show personals from the entire state. There showing personals from people there is a slim chance I will write. When I get an email from someone if it doesn't tell me the city, I'll just delete the email. This problem seems to have started when POF wanted to start charging for an upgrade on memberships. I've read most of this forum no one mentions if they have complained to POF directly. I plan to and encourage everyone to complain to everyone directly. This did not use to be a problem why is a problem now.

The bug occurs when the city is two names.

Works:
City = Berkley > profile displays “City: Berkley California”

Does not work:
City = San Francisco > profile displays “City: California”

It is a problem with the site, not the individual browsers. Checking the HTML shows the city is in fact not in the source being sent by the site.

Are the site administrators aware of the problem?

Ouch. If you look at this page (http://www.plentyoffish.com/advertising.aspx) you'll see the site gets 2.1 billion hits per month, 90 million visitors, and it sounds like it's just Markus and his girlfriend (plus volunteer moderators) doing it off advertising revenue.

If each page view is 10k bytes, that's 20 terabytes (20,000 gigabytes) of bandwidth. If there are 90 million users storing 100k in photos, that's 9 terabytes of disk space.

I don't know if I understood that web page correctly, (nor how much money comes from advertising), but it costs a lot to buy that much web hosting capacity.

I'm new and have seen a lot of people speculating that the site will become subscription oriented. It wouldn't surprise me. I don't know how 1 person can manage a site this size. It seems like the owner will have to increase revenue or expand the volunteer base to include developers and system administrators.

Two very eye opening links will detail the site and Markus's work habits.
http://highscalability.com/plentyoffish-architecture
http://www.inc.com/magazine/20090101/and-the-money-comes-rolling-in.html

Theres way more than enough profit to hire some one to fix this friggen city issue - I am a web development firm owner myself - Markus has done well - BUT the site is slowly going to go downhill IF improvements are not made that makes USERS happy.

10 million a yr and he won't hire people to maintain the site - all i can say is wow.

But this is getting off topic - the problem is CITY LOCATION IS NOT WORKING - will some one msg a moderator so the mod can tell Markus the peasents want their cake.

I tested this and found that if I enter just anything, it ignores the city. If one enters a major recognizable city, it will display it. Many sites these days will associate your city with the zip code you enter. It appears the site is at the early stages yet has not associated the city to the zip code but is doing some sort of validation based on what one enters.

Please refer to post #5 in this thread - this issue does not affect the 'lead-in' pages. Having the lead-in pages working correctly would seem to make your argument a moot point. Im not saying you're not right - but there is no consistency and now in another thread I see this is also impacting international users as well.

Actually, a database that contains all the cities with related zip/postal codes and lat/long info is not that big - actually its small when compared to other databases. (I use one for all the cities in the US on some of the sites we do) - costs me $50 a yr to keep an updated zipcode database.

The city name validation should occur at entry time not at runtime - but since you can put in anything, obviously no data checking is taking place - soooooo - the profile page being viewed SHOULD display the city since it is apparently a 'read' action and not doing anything comparative.

Hmm, now I just clicked onto about 10 New Jersey profiles and they all displayed the city and state. City was sometimes one word, sometimes two, and always New Jersey after it. Maybe admin is working state by state? New York is still messed up with regard to city display.
