Who's your favorite past or present MMA fighter(s), and why?

(note: I didn't say 'best' - although, best is still a good reason for them to be your favorite)

One of my favorites is Fedor Emelianenko. He doesn't showboat or trash talk, and he gets the job done. Peep his record: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedor_Emelianenko

Wish the UFC would get on board & hire him...

From what I've heard, Dana White's been driving pretty strong to the hoop to get Fedor to the UFC so everyone can see that dream Lesnar/Fedor matchup. Fedor's refused every single time. He hates money, I guess. As for my fave MMA fighter, I'm Canadian, gotta go with G.S.P. The guy is the most well-rounded fighter in the UFC right now aside from maybe Anderson Silva. Great standup, under-rated wrestler, just a beast in all areas.

When I first was introduced to MMA and the UFC, I was a huge fan of Ken Shamrock and Dan Savern, mostly because of the backgrounds in submission and wrestling respectively.

Out of the current generation, while they aren't "top" guys, I am a big fan of Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck, and Chris Leben. I do like GSP, Hughes, and Lesnar as well, but I'd say I'm a bigger fan of the first three.

I don't know who my favourite is ... hmmm ...

Kenny Florian is pretty cool, well rounded, positive attitude, intelligent, a good representative for the sport.

I always liked Chris Horadecki too. That boy has some sick power.

There are of course alot of interesting fighters, fun to watch, who's names or organizations I could never tell ya, but I'm not really a "fan" type so to narrow it down to one favourite would be an effort in futility for me.

Wish I could say Fedor, but that guy just pisses me off. Yay, he's a shrewd businessman. Do I give a shit about his business suavey?

Top three in order. George St Pierre/Forrest Griffin/Bj Penn

George is a beast and I can't see anyone in the near future stopping him. Best lb for lb in the world

Forrest is awesome. Been a fan since the original UF.

Bj is also such an incredible fighter and if he can keep his head in the game and be more proffessional hes no doubt a consideration for one of the best lb for lb fighters

yeah i wonder why no love for machida, bad ass fighter. love his knockouts of evans and franklin. confusing as hell for other fighters to track his movements. he never telegraphs any strikes which is amazing(due to his karate bkground).

tito has still been talking trash calling him a coward and stuff. hes back in the ufc and he said he wants a rematch.

my faves:
bj penn
vitor
henderson( that KO of bisping was b-r-u-t-a-l !!!!!!)
nate quarry
kid yamamoto
genki sudo

While I like both Bisping and Hendo, I basically have alot more respect for Hendo's personality. I appreciated the kind of man he is. BUT, that second blow, after Bisping had been KO'd ... a fact which Hendo admitted he knew for a fact ... that was a NO class act. I can't ****in believe people celebrate that shit.

Then again people these days also celebrate swarmings and other clear mismatches, so I guess it's anything goes.

As for Machida; I definitely like his style. The guy never gets hit! Anyone who calls him a coward for that is a fool. Machida is a warrior. And if you go to war as opposed to merely play games, you don't want to ever get hit.

After watching Henderson fight many many times, and after watching his interaction with Bisping on the show (where Bisping went WELL beyond normal trash talking, and actually started messing with / trying to pick fights with Henderson's fighters), I think Bisping got what was coming to him. This isn't an office job where people sit in front of an HR rep to reconcile their differences - the reconciliation is done in the ring - until the ref stops it. Bisping KNOWS that, and I believe, accepts the risk of taking that cheap shot when he runs off the mouth. How much more would Bisping be shooting off his mouth if the ref didn't see the KO, and he was able to recover / win the fight? I believe Bisping got what was coming to him.

/end rant

I love Machida. It's pretty close to what I was taught back in the 80's / early 90's before MMA was known. My instructor combined Karate, wrestling & judo into his own style. I think it's a lot of fun seeing what actually works, and what doesn't in combat. Machida may not always be an exciting fighter, but he's there to win fights - and that's what he does. A HUGE part of wining a fight is risk management, and he's got the winning formula.

"The Dragon" has a place in my heart...Lyoto is awesome...made mincemeat out of Evans in his last fight. The guy is truely undefeatable.

Lyoto is a dog, but in my opinion there are better fighters then him.

GSP-hands down the best pound for pound fighter in the world. his conditioning and his reign as world champion in a division filled with greats speaks world for his talent his coaches and his training camp.

mark kerr-the original monster and will always be one of the most brutal fighters theres been

mark coleman- althought the game as evolved beyond him, does anyone recall him bein the most dangerous man in the world? another ufc original and legand

royce gracie- the all arund little guy who could kick anyones ass the original ufc champion- ufc legand

andre "the pitbull" arvloski- rightfully named the pitbull from his ferocious fighting style, monster knockout power and skill and heart.

this is my opinion, these are just a few of my favorites and some of the badest this sport has ever had i dare anyone to argue with me.

Maybe he did. Bisping has a smart mouth. No arguing that.

But the fact remains that MMA is a SPORT. It is not a trial by combat or ritual duel, in which one is out to prove a crime or avenge an insult.

It is a SPORT that is struggling for crediblity in the eyes of people who think it is just a ciovneinet way of being allowed to engage in violence without consequence.

I like Hendo, but he knew Bisping was OUT cold. And with Bisping unconscious and his head flat on the mat, he dive bomb punched the guy. Thats the kind of shit I expect from losers on the street. The kind of thing that can result in grievious physical injury, right up there with Marty McSorely's cheap shot years ago in hockey ... and those that followed.

Someone being an ***hole simply isn't an adequette excuse. He had already STFU'd Bisping by KTFO'ing him. That second punch was overkill.

And personally, I have been jumped on the street, with my life in danger and no one around to help. And you want to know what? When the guy, who was definitively a bigger ***hole than Bisping could ever be, wwhen he was beat, he was beat.

You don't kick a man when he's down. And certianly not an honourable combatant. That's WRONG.

People need a lesson in good sportsmanship. And generally I would point to Hedno as a good example, and still would, except for that one instance. Call a spade a spade. That second shot was WAY out of line.

Urijah Faber is a force to be reckoned with in the near future. He is making his way up the chain and using his cardio to beat out all the beafy, throw everything they've got, fighters. He has a record of 22-3, with many of his wins being against such big opponents as Jens Pulver, David Velasquez, and Joe Pearson. But with his last match being a loss, you should see him slowly moving his way back on top.

Well, in fairness, the vast majority of the best and most popular MMA fighters in almost every weight category are in the UFC, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that UFC fighters would dominate this list. Especially if you're talking casual fans.

Heart?

Since when?

And his style is only ferocious when he hasn't been KTFO in a few fights.

Had to respond to this as someone who actually has had some cage matches you do not stop fighting until the Referee tells you to stop.It is up to the Referee to determine whether or not someone is knocked out...Hendo only hit him one time after the punch that laid him out the ref jumped in as he should have...you don't back off and wait for the guy to recover, you finish him...

While it is true you don't stop fighting until the referee tells you to, Henderson did admit afterwards that he knew Bisping was unconscious and threw that last punch anyway. So while Dan followed the letter of the law, he didn't follow the spirit of the law, which is to protect fighters from unnecessary punishment.

Exactly. You won't hear me complain too often about a fighter continuing to hit after it appears their opponent is out. And if I do, it would be a complaint against the ref. I've seen fighters dominating their oppoent more or less plead to the ref to stop the fight. I mean, no one is out (or at least shouldn't be out) to seriously injure their opponent. And alot of these fighters do have a conscience there. They don't want to pound on someone that is defenseless.

But Dan admitted to knowing that Bisping was clearly KTFO'd, but wanted to hit him again anyway.

Seriously. Guess not many people on here are familiar with PRIDE/Dream outside of Fedor and other guys who transitioned stateside.

Saku is absolutely my favorite fighter ever. Sad to see him hit his twilight years so early but what can you expect when they threw him in with guys like prime Cro Cop, at least a full weight class heavier, on a regular basis. His showing in the 2000 GP was legendary, as the wars with the Gracies. A funny, humble warrior with more heart than a hundred Forrests. He came in dressed as Super Mario when he fought Randleman (who they called Donkey Kong in Japan) for chripe's sake!

Also really dig/dug:

Big Nog
Igor Vovchanchyn
Hendo
Hayato Sakurai
Wanderlei (seriously, no love for Wandy either? I know he's had a rough time lately but man..)
Hidehiko Yoshida
the Diaz brothers
Gegard Mousasi
Kazuyuki Fujita
and KIMBO SLICE .... okay that one is a joke

And the really obvious guys like Fedor, GSP, Machida, et al

I was a Cro Cop fan until two years ago, his recent UFC bouts have been horrible, he walked away with his towel over his head in shame. He's finished now. His fight was Fedor was him at his peak and is still my favorite fight to re-watch.

No one can argue with Fedor's success and we all are fans, but no one likes what Wanderlei brings to the ring? His fights are always great, both in result (except that last decision somehow won by **** boy Franklin) and in his ring performance. Some guys are scared to get hit, KO'ed, that man wants the fans to enjoy the fight. He gets my vote. If I wanted to cheer for slippery snakes like Anderson Silva and Machida, who can't take a punch I have to say, I would vote for them. My vote stands for Wanderlei Silva, with Shogun in second. For those who count votes Belfort is third on my list and is a welcome addition to the west's roster of fighters.

Not to bash GSP and Koscheck fans, but their strategic fights are a little more boring than the others, and why does it take them 4-5 rounds to do on top of someone what Fedor can do in a minute? Most of the time in the guard! Again, GSP, Koscheck, even Brock, another wrestler, can't take a punch. Smothering is boring. Brock's got fists of concrete though!

I understand it's MMA and all styles are included. P.S. I'm a Bob Sapp fan too! He makes me feel small and insignificant and hungry whenever I see him!
Cheers!

I disagree. I left it open for this very reason... thought his name was going to come up sooner:

Urijah Faber is a force to be reckoned with in the near future.

Remember 2 of those losses were from Mike Brown - who looks like he's going to be a force to be reckoned with for a while (I admit I've not watched WEC since Brown vs Faber 2). Prior to being beat by Brown, Faber held the belt (read: went on an undefeated winning streak) for what - something like two and a half years?

Guess not many people on here are familiar with PRIDE/Dream outside of Fedor and other guys who transitioned stateside.

Well, the few guys I was watching in pride & K1 were the guys that happened to come over to the UFC. Since UFC absorbed those promotions (and the fighters I liked watching), I've not paid much attention to them.
