| Compaq Cq5110f says Vista 64bit, Off.Dep says 32bit Posted: 9/28/2009 7:28:37 AM | I am confused, the new compaq Cq15110f at Office Depot is on sale for $296 with Windows Vista Home premium, and sales rep says it is 32bit (and 3gbram, athlon7550, etc). But the same computer on HP website shows Cq1150f "comes with Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit edition" etc. It only has same 3gb ram.
I called HP 800#, she said If I add the 4th Gb ram, it will upgrade to to 64bit OS. Is it that simple> Or how simple is it?
PS Cq1150 has maximum 4Gb ram allowed.

| Compaq Cq5110f says Vista 64bit, Off.Dep says 32bit Posted: 9/28/2009 9:30:01 AM | A 32bit OS can not use all of the 4Gb of RAM installed [unless PAE is turned on, avalable on certain OSs] so when an OEM like HP offer a system with 4Gb and more the option to have a 32bit OS is still there but they usually auto switch the OS from 32 to 64 bit.
I know Dell did that with my precision, they warned me the OS I chose was incompatable with the hardware configuration and recommended the OS upgrade.
These days it doesnt matter wether it comes preinstalled with 32 or 64 bit OS, as the key is valid for both versions, all you need to do is get hold of the right DVD and your set.
32bit OSs are more common, less trouble and more widely supported by other hardware vendors, where as a 64bit OS will give better performance from the same hardware.
Short answer to your question is yes it is as simple as they said.
But there is a proviso and it is a 64bit OS user who does add hardware to it and likes to play with software might run into trouble when a 32bit OS user will sail through it all

Upgrading RAM will not automatically upgrade your processor or OS, it just gives you more RAM but the one at the store might already have a 64bit processor and just be running a 32bit OS.
So, like BladeRunner said there are benefits/drawbacks to both but I would recommend the 32bit OS

The problem with your system is if you want 4gb of ram you are going to have to get rid of the 2 512mb ram sticks already in there and put in 2 1gb ram sticks in there instead.
Anoher thing is since you have the Phenom based processor in there, the ram should be running at DDR2 1066 instead of DDR2 800 for optimal performance, but in order for that to happen you are going to have to upgrade the entire ram sticks itself and replace them all with DDR2 1066 ram sticks. HP was really cheap there, by giving you lower speed ram for a processor that's suited for a higher speed of ram, but all namebrand pc companies cut corners with stuff like that so it doesn't surprise me.

While the hp website says 64-bit, it is very possible that they shipped a 32-bit version to the stores. The best way to find out is to check the display model and/or box, the product box should tell you the specs as well.
And no, upgrading the memory will not automatically enable the 64-bit version of vista.
One thing about this computer is it is practically a throw-a-way.
300w power supply is barely enough to run expansion cards (depending on which ones) an I'm sure the motherboard has no room for extra sata devices as well, like my current Compaq SR5610F.
However, if you toss in a decent card, say a 8600 GS (or one that doesn't require a power dongle), you shouldn't have many problems with lag on most games. If you want to upgrade to a beefy graphics card, you'll need to replace the power supply.
All else fails, just use the oem key with a 64bit vista os dvd disk as mentioned.
