You can rip the audio from a DVD to an audio track, but it will be exactly as you hear it on the DVD with people talking over it the lot.

If you want a CD of the tracks that are played in the film your best bet is to do as sugested above, get the soundtrack CD, that will be the songs played in the film from start to finnish without anything else over them

It is straight forward! I use an external DVD player(under $50), a USB capture unit(again very cheap) and some software. I connect the audio output from the DVD player to the audio in of the capture unit and plug it into a spare USB slot. I run the record software and play the DVD, the software saves the audio to a file which can be edited to cut out unwanted chat and save the tracks to individual files, then burn a music CD.
I use the EDIROL UA-1A capture hardware which may now be obsolete but a search on the net will find a suitable replacement. I use Sound Studio on a Mac to capture and edit the captured data(there is also capture hardware/software for Windows, I mainly use the setup with a turntable to convert my old Vinyl to something that I can load on my iPod.

Do you mean the farewell concert by the Band? I have that DVD and think it is excellent.

You could do that or you could just rip the digital audio stream straight off the disc with a piece of software like ImToo DVD audio ripper.

I just did a quick newsgroup search ( http://binsearch.info/?q=last+waltz&max=250&adv_age=365&server= ) .... and in about 5 seconds I got over 250 results. It's definitely out there.

BladeRunner

The thing I like about Sound Studio is that it allows me to set markers where I can separate the captured file into individual files allowing me to discard dead time on vinyl or chat on a DVD. If the OP is talking about the Band DVD then there is a significant amount of time spent talking between tracks which would exceed the time of a CD. Cutting out the chat would allow the music to be recorded to a CD, it is a while since I watched the DVD so I am unsure if only the music can be recorded to a single CD.

Thanks for all the replies.
Guess I need to do a search. I swear the last time I looked I did not see a sound track CD!

best way to do that is to record on cool edit and then save to a wav or mp3 but you would have to do a live record

You can cut out the audio you dont want with Sound Forge or Nero Wave Editor, I prefer Sound Forge, but its expensive, usually used by professionals, where as Nero Wave Editor is included with Nero when you buy it from a store

Yes there is a program called DVD Audio Extractor that will do exactly what the name implies. It works great for exactly what you are looking for. If you have a problem finding it, let me know. It will break DVDs down by title and chapter etc. If it's a movie with other audio (speaking) just edit with audacity. If in fact you still have problems, you can burn a copy and send it to me and I will rip it for you for free.

Freebie Download ---> Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

... which is also part of the K-Lite Codec Pack.

It will playback DVD/Blu-Ray LPCM, DTS or AC3 in Stereo in the Settings.

Then use "Windows Sound Recorder" or whatever Software of your Choice and capture to 44,000 Hz @ 16 Bits into Windows WAV/PCM. Record each Song seperately, unless you want to learn how to make Cuesheets.

Most Audio DVD Rippers can only grab the lowest quality Sound ---> AC3.

AC3 = 640 K/bits (max) @ 5-7 Channels
Audio CD = 1,510 K/bits @ 2 Channels
DTS = 1,538 K/bits @ 5-8 Channels
LPCM = 4,608 K/bits @ 6-8 Channels

Further, AC3 is a lossy Multi-Channel Format similar to MP3, whereas MP3 is "usually" limited to 2.

AC3 Multi-Channel Audio Extraction can often produce 7 Files at 640 K/Bit resulting in a total of 4,480 K/Bits of Audio, and that is about 3x the Bitrate of Audio Cds. Aside from the Fact that AC3 Audio is degraded, better than 80% of the Audio Data is also redundant entirely to create a Spacial Acoustical Environment. Most of these "DVD Audio Rippers" cannot properly down-mix 5-7 Channels into Stereo, since it requires the listener's Criterias to make Adjustments. Should "Rear Channels" contain excessive Reverberation, and the "Center Channel" improperly 'lays-over' the "Front Stereo" Channels, the Stereo Down-mix will be in a complete Mess.

In many Cases, no Matter how good the DVD/Blu-ray Audio is, sometimes its not possible to "stereorize" the Multi-Channels for CDs, and one is often even better off to just download a 160 K/Bit+ MP3 and burn it to CD.

Usually the music is only stored on the DVD in that lowest quality form, AC3 at 48k samples/sec. Converting or recording it to "CD quality" PCM (16/44.1) just makes it compatible with audio CD players - it won't restore the quality lost when the music was reduced to AC3. Some concert DVDs include PCM (better than CD quality) tracks; any DVD audio ripper should give you the choice of using them instead of the compressed AC3 surround track. But, they'll be in 16bit/48k form, so to burn to CD, the track will have to be resampled to 44.1k.
