| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 12:56:44 PM | Wow...I couldn't believe this myself! Saskatoon Saskatchewan, Canada. One of those Nigerian scams, convinces a woman that she had "inherited" 12 million from a distance relative. Shes a tad suspicious, but figures she'd go along with it. (Already you can see the larceny in her heart. Remember people...you CAN'T be scammed if you have no larceny in your heart!) The guy says that for a "small" 80 thousand dollar fee, this money will be delivered right to her! Oh sure.....BUT, she does NOT need to send it ahead...she can pay it when she takes the 12 million! (Really??) She gets a phone call giving her a combination number for the lock on the delivery package. (Nice touch, that, huh?) She meets a guy at the airport. She hasn't got her money with her...she's still suspicious. The guy asks for the money...she wants to see her money. Scammer opens a large suitcase. Inside a slightly smaller one, with all kinds of locks on it, including a combination lock. He opens it, and by the holy christ hisself...12 million in US dollars, bundled up and wrapped in cellophane. The guy again asks for the money for the delivery fee, she says "Take it out of the money right there! The guys wants Canadian dollars, and asks her for at least thirty grand. She gets her hackles up, and says "No...I want to verify that money. Scammer tells her she is a very wise woman. He unwraps a bundle, and hands her a 100 dollar US bill. She takes it (leaving the rest in his care because she hasn't paid the 'delivery fee'.) She immediately goes to the police...who verify that the bill she has gotten form the guy is REAL. Actual 100 US dollar bill! OMG! 12 million...all hers! The cops are figuring "No way...this is too good to be true!" So...they get a warrant, go to the guys hotel room, bust his butt, take the evidence. The lady helps them by opening the combination lock...and all this cash is stuffed in there! All fake. Counterfeit. Every last bill. The one she had gotten was obviously a "bait bill". Lesson? If it is too good to be true...it probably is! Even WITH 'overwhelming evidence"...even if the "sample" is real...be very careful out there. | |

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 2:18:17 PM | | As W.C. Fields said, "You can't cheat an honest man." Or maybe he said, "There's a sucker born every minute. " Wait, that was P.T. Barnum. Anyway. Glad the woman didn't give this dolt $80,000. | |

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 2:19:28 PM | Now THAT was absolutely "choice"! First time I've heard of a 419er stupid enough to come to the victim's location to make the swap. There've been so many greedy people taken in by them that BOTH the Secret Service and FBI opened field offices in Nigeria to try to intercept dumb Americans - and there have been a good number of them taking the bait. At least one American was found dead in Nigeria after trying to claim money under this scam (1995).
Unfortunately, the Secret Service since closed their office (2006). I just checked and the FBI Legal Attache office was still there (2 agents?), located inside the U.S. Embassy.

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 2:49:02 PM | Sorry folks...this was from an interview on CBC radio this afternoon. Not everything is on the net...but this one might be somewhere for those wanting to go look for it. I figure the "scammer" used a dummy for the drop...maybe a stupid cousin, or some such. Certainly the people who tried this wouldn't want the "brains" of the operation going down. Besides...with all the time, and counterfeiting....probably a gang oriented scam. But sooo beautiful......sad in a way. Glad the lady didn't show up with the cash...she could well have been harmed and her cash removed from her corpse, leaving the scammer with the "bait money" right there in place for the next victim. So, I guess the lesson is "Never show up with the cash!" Legitimate deals involving large amounts of cash are most often NOT legitimate deals at all! Heard of and read about a lot of different scams and how they can be run. Simple self-protection on my part. I rarely feel that someone is walking around with MY cash in their pockets! (except when it is true, of course! rare...but has happened.) | |

She was not to smart if she thought you could fit $12million in a small suit case.
12,000,000 Dollars
In 100 Dollar Bill denominations = 120,000 bills or 2400 bundles.
No way you are getting 2400 bundles of $100 dollar bills in any suit case.
Any scammer with 1/2 a brain is not going to do a money swap at the one location with probably the most cameras watching him, like you would have in an airport.
Then add the fact there is no record of this on the Internet anywhere and -
Lesson Here - do not believe urban legends.

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 3:51:15 PM | As I poster earlier...an interview on CBC, on the radio this afternoon. Urban legend? Probably NOT. Considering the fellow on the interview had seen the actual evidence himself. (So he says...i can't verofy that, I wasn't there, and it is hard to read body language over the freaking radio!) Anyways...sounds like an odd story...and it is. BUT, this does NOT mean it is not true. Just because you can't find it on the internet, you say "Urban Legend"?? there are more ways for information to get out there than over the net. Try Saskatoon papers? Probably not huh? The warning still stands....as is a prediction. I say there will be a sudden influx of people winding up dead near airports in Canada.."last seen with a large amount of cash they'd recently withdrawn from their lifesavings". Just lucky this woman didn't show up with the cash. Also....i figure that there is a group, very widespread, running this. the "dropman", plus those who made up the fake currency, the people running it from out of the country. Besides...the way airports are run these days, how could anyone come in with a suitcase like that without passing customs? Can't be done, unless there are diplomatic stickers on it....which were NOT mentioned in the report I heard. Meaning this was set up and run here in Canada. But, again, probably hatched overseas. | |

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 4:25:09 PM | Is it true Canadians just leave their doors unlocked too?. Such trusting souls you lot. In NY, we call that open invite for free stuff.
I don't understand how this was the "best scam EVER!". Or are people that trusting or easy to amuse? If so, I have real estate at ground zero going for cheap. Pay no attention to the bulldozers there at the moment and those people building a memorial. They'll be done soon, but you'll have to forward money to my off shore account first. You'll get first pick at your land once the transaction is complete. Trust me.
She immediately goes to the police...who verify that the bill she has gotten form the guy is REAL....
The one she had gotten was obviously a "bait bill". Well duh! OF COURSE the guy is going to give her a real bill to have checked out. Why would he give her a fake one knowing she was going to have it checked out. You think he didn't know that??? He didn't argue with her saying "No you can trust me, it's real". He said go right ahead, get it checked out to gain her trust. What she should of done, is ask for several bills. $100 bills now have a watermark/string in/on them now so it's pretty easy to spot fakes.
I too am finding flaws in this story because of the amount alone. I know that in the US, if you carry more than $10,000 in cash on you and getting on a plane, they will ask you a sh!t load of questions. So if this guy got on or off a plane with that amount, I'm sure the airline would of had plenty of questions for him. ESPECIALLY the way the airport security is now. So not buying it.

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 5:07:15 PM | the link is there. It works. I am sure this is the story that was being commented on this afternoon. So....no longer just "urban legend". And yes...we don't lock the doors...jeeze...you know how much it COSTS to replace a lock today? Good lord, you don't let someone bust your door open for a home invasion...you be polite and save yourself some cash by OPENING the door! You Americans...so hostile and rude at times! You really must learn to be more open and hospitable! Especially when you are considered a "sheeple" by law enforcement and criminals alike! Anyhow's....what would "airport security" have to do with someone meeting some at an airport? Doesn't mean either one of them flew in...just a meeting place. Get the idea? Doesn't matter that she did not ask for several bills...the guy got nailed. Great ending to another scammer! They didn't mention the Quebec tie-in on the radio today though....should have known there would be one though. And why can't it be the "best scam ever"? You got a better one?
Besides...you New Yorkers had snow today (Sept 30th!) Bwahahaha! Serves ya right!

They didn't mention the Quebec tie-in on the radio today though....should have known there would be one though. And why can't it be the "best scam ever"? You got a better one? Well considering this one failed there are millions of better scams just based on that fact they where successful.
I would say the most successful scam ever run and still going is religion.
A close second would be government.

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 9/30/2009 5:15:17 PM | | Humm...the best scam would have been if the woman had kept her mouth shut and kept the $100. | |

Is it true Canadians just leave their doors unlocked too?. Such trusting souls you lot. In NY, we call that open invite for free stuff
When michael moore came up with all that stuff i thought, that's just dumb, no one leaves their door open. it must have been a really small town he was at. Then the last few days there were some stories on the news of a guy getting into women's bedrooms and sexually assaulting them, and how the door was unlocked or they key was in the door! mind u this was on the island in a smaller community, but i thought "wow, it IS true". But again, smaller towns, no one in their right mind in the city would leave their door unlocked.

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 10/2/2009 6:09:25 AM | | Actually OP I think maybe your the one that got scammed I live in Saskatoon and read the news daily and have never seen nor heard of this story. Do you have a link where I can read it myself? | |

| Best scam EVER! Posted: 10/2/2009 6:39:56 AM | I always believed after all the warnings that surely people wouldn't be stupid enough to fall for these scams... But was watching the judge judy show a few weeks back. Not only was a woman being sued by her friend over one of these scams, but she had actually gotten caught up with another during the hearing...
It wasn't stupidity on her behalf because her friend was out of pocket, but pure greed... Not sure how the saying goes exactly... "Nature provides for mans' need... Man will connive for his greed".

If by 'better' you mean 'funnier', well - why yes, yes I do.

Better than using the cops is scamming the scammer - but that could be just me.

OP... can you post the URL to the source story? It sounds a little too fantastical to be real... Oh, but if he has a "source" then it must be real? I think your logic skills may need some honing. Allow me to clarify due to a comprehension issue you appear to be experiencing.
The ability to link to a source story does NOT make this valid, it allows me to make an informed opinion.
Nice jump to that conclusion though...
Is it true Canadians just leave their doors unlocked too?. Yes, in many areas this is the case. I have no problem running out to do some shopping and leaving my doors unlocked, but I live in a very old neighbourhood and my neighbours keep an eye out for things… they will also plow my driveway in the winter and sometimes even mow my lawn in the summer…
It’s a Canadian thing… | |
