| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 7:59:43 PM | There are a lot of us here in the States. (Yep I’m one of them, and so far I’ve been called foreigner, alien, immigrant, terrorist even communist! ) I wonder whether folks our age consider dating people who were born abroad and talk with funny accents that are not likely to go away, or you strictly prefer the homegrown variety. If the aforementioned alien can speak and spell, but there are cultural differences, would that affect your relationship in the long run? How about people with different religions, customs and traditions; wouldn’t that be a major put off?
I am not talking about illegal immigrants who are out to get a green card from you, just people who live here but they were not born in the States.
Just curious what the general sentiment is among the 45 + people.

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 8:13:13 PM | | I have. I don't have any problems with race, religion or lack of it, ethnic origin, different country of birth, type of employment. It all comes down to character - and in some cases, making sure we're on the same page with regard to just what a 'date' is. In some instances, some natural born citizens seem a whole lot more alien than the true aliens. Takes all kinds, and I've learned something new from each and every one of them. One thing I learned is that it'is not a great idea to date submarine crewmen, though at our age it's a non-issue. | |

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 8:23:07 PM | I did; married him, too. But I imported him on my own, lol! Lasted 12 years, and was good most of it. We're still friends, but he lives across the country. Do it again in a NY minute if I felt that way about someone.

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 8:29:33 PM | Well, aliens, folks born outside of the U.S, before WW2 , raised me. My manners are theirs, This country has edumacated me to drop some of their bad ideas. One of my co-workers, who was raised not by Europeans, but by her Egyptian parents, also has great manners. I am guessing the lack of manners is kinda our thing. We had to break with the English. So, Aliens can abduct me anytime. | |

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 8:57:26 PM | Wow, When I first read the subject line I thought....this is getting serious, we've run out of topics for discussion. Now we're sharing views on dating aliens (lol)
People from the states have said they could tell I was from Canada by my accent...meanwhile, I was thinking the same thing about them. (lol)
I think being from a different culture and having a different belief system/religion would make getting to know them far more interesting OP and would make for some lively discussions. For instance I am Metis, a French/Cree mix from Northern Manitoba. Most people aren't familiar with my cultural background unless their from Canada.
So I guess I could be referred to as an alien.

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 10:00:44 PM | Yes I would. My only condition would be that she (it?) be a carbon based life form and have at least a rudimentary understanding of our mating rituals. I hate having to start from scratch. You'ld think that would be a boon, but then you have to get them to let go of pre-conceived notions of humans, explain everything from the git -go, and by the time you've covered everything up to third base, I'm just too damn tired to slide into home.
Naw, seriously, In my short, but extensive, list of must haves I don't think I've ever stated anything about having to be born and raised here in the good ol' US of A. And as others have pointer out -- I've got enough trouble relating to others here in the states ('specially those in the big cities), that an "alien" might not be all that dif'rent.
TK {I speak fluent hillbilly, and can converse, albeit slowly, in Metro-ese}

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 10:14:22 PM | ^ ^ ^ I think I can program myself to speak hillbilly with some effort-albeit a with traceable accent too, aliens are pretty talented with people's tongues | |

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/1/2009 11:17:50 PM | As long as they were kind and could speak English I’d be okay with it. Not sure about colour; my fave colour is purple and if they were green they’d clash with an awful lot of my clothes... Seriously; one family member is Russian, my nephew has a Polish girlfriend, and I’ve dated a Croatian. We’re very cosmopolitan. | |

I'd welcome the opportunity, actually, just to benefit from the new perspective.

| WOULD YOU DATE AN ALIEN? Posted: 10/2/2009 2:48:37 AM | hmm, really thought this was going to be a star trek kind of thread. well, my ex was from scotland and became a citizen after he married me--i think. it was just not important enough to peg the date. he had been living here for years, before he met me.
even more important--here i am in california, a new yorker! can't become more alien than that. so, it's not always the country, it's the smaller subdivision or the "corporate culture" as they say in business. recently i met some born and raised californians who could easily have passed for being east coast raised. maybe in another life? my best friend until she moved back to portugal, was born there, raised in australia and lived a good part of her married life in england and travelling with her engineer hubby. we bonded immediately. so, not clear: why wouldn't someone date an alien?
op, it may be where you are living or the neighborhood or that you aren't getting out deep enough in the unfamiliar waters, to find your fish. you have to keep swimming and just land a few times, to see if there is a difference from one place to another. there are all kinds of bigotry. as i tell my kids: their loss, not yours!
