Basically, when you work out you need food to fuel A) your activity, and B) any muscle repair that needs to be done after your workout. In other words you should be eating more calories around your workout times than proportionately throughout the rest of the day.

So if, for instance, I was working out at 4:00 and it was going to take me 45 minutes, I'd eat at 3:00, 5:00 and 6:00.

That depends on when and what you had for lunch and if you had a snack after that as well.

Basically you never want the tank to go empty and if you are doing high intensity workouts best not to eat to soon before going to he gym (~1hr)

They types of food you eat and the types of exercise you do are just as important.

Check out this site as they have lost of great information on the types of fuels and how they work in your body.

How the body converts food to fuel relies upon several different energy pathways. Having a basic understanding of these systems can help athletes train and eat efficiently for improved sports performance.

your alimentary canal is digesting your last 2 or 3 meals for continuous nourishment, and your liver and muscles have stores of many hours of glycogen.

Eating before a workout would have to be "fast" carbs, and is probably unnecessary. Fast carbs are usually low quality, processed carbs, aka sugar.

To lose that last 25 pounds, eat less.

ok since you want to shed fat i would stick to 20-30 grams of complex carbs before the workout so your not on empty. that will help with the energy for weights and cardio. you can have oatmeal, whole wheat bread or my favorite wheat germ with splenda. wheat germ has really high amounts of vitamin e and folic acid and many other important vitamins and minerals. then have 20 grams of protein in the form of a whey protein shake or chicken, tuna, or turkey. you want protein because it burns more calories and helps you get toned. carbs would just make you retain water if you ate it by themselves. i would also recommend drinking a gallon of water a day to flush out toxins, keep yourself hydrated and make your skin tighter. now postworkout you can get away with cheating on a diet because your body mainly utilizes this food for muscles to repair what you just put your body through. so i would have 30 grams of whey protein powder in water or fat free milk. then have 20 grams of carbs of either gummy bears and other simple carbs or just complex stuff. the simple carbs will spike insulin and transport amino acids to your muscles faster. insulin also is a very anabolic hormone and helps repair your muscles just like testosterone hence why pro bodybuilders take it. and the complex carbs will also help repair and shed fat but they digest slower. for more gh release probably eat no carbs post workout. you should also look into pre workout supplements. like fat burners and n.o. boosters. those really help you get your body to where you want it and are good if you have the money. other than that, diet wise low carb diets are huge because they work. you can stick to just protein and fats. because carbs arent essential for your body. proteins and fats are. its too long to explain but if you want to know anymore just let me know

I think it really depends. Like for me if I workout an hour after I eat or an hour after I tend to get sick. The only advice I have is if you do have carbs that you eat a protein for every carb you eat. It kind of zeros out the carbs that you eat.

I think there are general rules that you can follow but that what works the best for you will be more tailored to your lifestyle, the foods you are eating and the type and intensity of your exercises. You may want to keep a journal of when you are eating, what you are eating, how much you are eating as compared to when you are exercising. Track the results and you will have your answer.

Over the years I have found that what works best for me is contrary to conventual thought.

It's a confusing world and everyone does something different. Timing is everything, but it depends on your goals. Reading books is how I did it. Start simple, and I recommend Body-for-LIFE by Bill Phillips. It will give you a basic understanding in the food chapter of how and when to eat, and what's good and what is bad, what protein/carbs to combine etc. If you need any help or have any questions, feel free to contact me. I have success coached in the past and have helped many people transform their lives.

The basics are you will need to eat 6 small meals every 2.5 -3 hours a day containing a portion of carbs and a portion of protein per meal (your protein requirements are not as much as a man so it shouldn't be too difficult). I always train on an empty stomach right when I wake up in the morning, but in your case you will have wanted to have eaten a meal 2-3 hours before the workout. After a weight training workout, consume a meal or MRP (meal replacement shake) immediately after training. After cardio, which you should learn about HIIT training so you only need to do it 20 minutes for 3x a week - I'm not kidding - you wait ONE hour after cardio then consume a meal or MRP.

I have before and after photos as well, I was a competitor in the 2000 Body-for-LIFE challenge.

Loaded question. It is different for everyone and you will get 20 different opinions from 20 different people. What I did was chose a low carb lifestyle; some bash me for it here but hey; for me it worked and continues to work; I did lose a lot of weight in the first month and a half, (55 pounds) however I was and still am VERY strict, I work out 5 or 6 days a week and I eat every 3 hours. It means a lot of food preparation and to plan ahead. I also feel 110% better than ever, and I eat 20 or 30 carbs a day, from vegetables (green ones) max. Some say too much to fast is not healthy; however it was not the case for me. So, really, what you may want to do is find out a few life styles you are willing to change to, and take it from there. I have learned there are positive and negative things to any "diet" I just picked the one that made my cholesterol go way DOWN, fat gone and I have energy. Now I am pursuing BodyBuilding and am able to function JUST fine on how and what I eat. Again, I have made it my lifestyle. I am not at all deprived and I eat foods I love. I cut out a lot but hey, gotta give up something to gain something...:)

One fine hot mess, In regards to your low carb diet...be weary more and more evidence is piling against these sorts of diets. I much prefer the 40 carb 30/30 protein and fat zone diet I am on right now. In fact I will post the link, I think I've posted it before but heck a second time don't hurt.
It is a PDF file just so you know.

Yeah, I get all the comments that is why I stated I am doing well on it. Some people can do them, some cannot. I happen to be fine on it. Lab work done all the time, you name it. My body just happens to be fine with this lifestyle. There is evidence on all diets, it boils down to finding what works as long as it does not affect health. I did the "add carbs" thing and bloated me up...so...I do what works. But thanks...:)

I am awake and aware. What you are saying is not, I repeat, is not the truth. At least not in full. That sort of blind devotion breeds ignorance. Does selling half truths over the internet with grotesque language to fright people into following your life path make you awake? If so I must be missing something entirely. Maybe breeding fear so people follow my life decisions is what I will replace logical deduction and rational doubt with.

about 45 minutes before your workout, eat an apple with some peanut butter. That will help fuel your workout. Try not to drink much water within an hour of working out. It usually leads to cramps, and if you workout like I do, feeling sick. LOL
Also, snack on plain almonds throughout the day. Plenty of protien and fiber right there ;)

I would highly recommend the book Nutrient Timing. I'm attaching the Google books link...it's not the complete book but it will probably give you an idea of what's best for you.

dannng! ZARATHUSTRAOO! Dude i seen u in big time muscle fitness Mags and to see u here talking like an average Joe is kinda weird. Cool man!

Now to the thread... heh heh:
I am no expert but u definitely dont wanna hit those weights or workout on an empty 'energy tank' and when i say TANK i dont mean ur stomach. How soon and how much do you eat after that 'pawnage workout'? Depends on u but u definitely dont wanna fill urself to the brim. no!

I have come to KNOW and UNDERSTAND my own body to know how to use the GENERAL and definitely useful info out there to help me shred.

Always pay attention, first and foremost, to your body and what it tells u. From there u would know what to do with the information u've gathered.

Vegan diets are great for sports training so you get a fast turnaround. When to eat as a Vegan has much more flexibility than other diet regimes. Ones training schedule can go down to 2 hr intervals, instead of 4 hr intervals.

OP, I've been trying to figure this out, too! I never realized just how complex the body really is, and how unique each one is. This kind of info seems like trying to find a needle in a haystack, huh?

After a weight training workout, consume a meal or MRP (meal replacement shake) immediately after training. After cardio, which you should learn about HIIT training so you only need to do it 20 minutes for 3x a week - I'm not kidding - you wait ONE hour after cardio then consume a meal or MRP.

What about when you do both cardio and weight training in the same session? Would the person consume the carbs/protein right after or wait an hour?

If you're hungry, yes, eat dinner after your workout, but a meal that is sensible to your weight-loss goals. I find it's better to eat a larger meal at least one hour BEFORE a workout and then a light snack (if I'm hungry) after.

Best way to drop weight is to skip dinner altogether after a workout (as long as your blood sugar levels are not dangerously low), then eat breakfast next morning (when for sure you'll be good and hungry).

Eat all damn day long. I mean, snack. Snack on healthy things if possible. Grapes, nuts, etc... A little ziplock bag, in your pocket will do wonders. Try to stay away from salted snacks though, because of the sodium, etc.

There's a lot of people whom are under the impression that to lose weight, don't eat. I frown upon that, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

You want to kick out those last few pounds? Cool!
The reason why I suggest that you eat, snack, etc... You want to keep your metabolism running. As long as it's runnin', you're burnin those calories, (which is a good thing)... Why do you think people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Because it kick starts your metabolism!

30-60 minutes before your workout, have a banana and an orange and a glass of water.

Drink water liberally during your workout. (And throughout the day, of course.)

Immediately after your workout, have some type of nutrition bar that has a balance of carbs and protein. Have a moderate dinner (lean protein, lots of fibrous veggies) about 60-90 minutes after your workout.

If you start feeling a little hungry close to bedtime, have an apple and a glass of water.

This is assuming you normally have a solid breakfast and lunch, or (ideally) 3-4 small balanced meals during the day.

Boosting metabolism and energy: focus on high-intensity exercise, whether that means a hill program on a cardio machine, or doing complexes or tabata in the weightroom (generally, do compound rather than isolation exercises).

If you REALLY want to lose weight quickly, do cardio twice a day...a high intensity interval workout in the morning on an empty stomach, and a gentle workout in the evening (like a 30 minute walk).

Eating after a workout is the best time, but also important to eat before as well, have a half protein drink or anything slow release about two hours before. Even half a banana before the workout is fine.
