| | How often do condoms really break? Page 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | I am amazed how often people explain an unintended pregnancy with something along the lines of, "we used a condom, but it broke."
Now, I know condoms aren't perfect. They do break occasionally. But I really don't think they break all that often. My understanding is the breakage rate of today's latex condoms is pretty darn low. Yet to hear people tell it, every third or forth unplanned pregnancy involves condom breakage.
Is all this condom breakage for real? Or is at least some of it embarrassment about not having used protection? | |

I don't bleive this is a defect in the condom. Some people just don't use them properly. For one some people don't know how to properly put on a condom. And some beople don't understand the concept of warming the woman up first. Woman aren't self lubricated all the time. Only when they are turned on so you have to warm them up first. Kind of like a car. The motor oil isn't circulating if the motor isn't running. Or some woman don't produc much lube even if there excited therefor you should use some personal lubricant. This is very important when it comes to prevent condoms from breaking. | |

LOL ..when i saw the Op I knew this was coming .... when I was a little boy I found some condoms ...I thought wow what really neat water balloons ... I filled them up with water ....you know them suckers will hold over 15 gallons of water and not burst .... mom was kinda shocked when she got home and found my new toys
I think if a condom breaks either you have bought some out of date ..or they have been exposed to heat or sunlight ..or you haven't been laid in a long time and carried it in your wallet for a couple years ..you cant carry them in your wallet or put them on the dash of your car ..or even under the seat in your car when it sets in the sun ...temperatures in a car get really high in the summer .... I never had one break in use but when I was a teenager I finally got lucky and opened one that I had had hid under the seat in my car ...It crumbled in my hand .. if one breaks because of your penis size you are an elephant | |

I've only ever had 1 Break on me !!! that was a long time ago though,
when I was doing doggy the condom came off, but didnt break it was not long before i got another 1 on though.
I saw in the paper today, about this 13 yr old who is going to be a Dad !!! I didnt think he would have it him to get a girl pregnant ?
Don't they have a sex Education Lessons any more ? especially in this day & age with unintended pregnancy , as Jeremy Kyle Puts it " Put Something On The End Of it Then !!! "

My G/F's daughter is a stickler for 100% correct condom use...
(I know this as her b/f told me all about it after he had to beg me for a ride to the store to buy them ) Last year she got pregnant and had to have an abortion...
My own G/F managed to get 2 STD's despite using condoms...
And her Ex got Aids, again despite condom use...
It seems to me that a lot of the hype about condoms is marketing. If it was all about safe sex, we'd see a lot more about testing for STD's etc... yet, it's all about the condoms... The condom lobby is a big part of the multi-billion dollar a year condom business... Safe sex ads are simply advertisments for condoms... the condom lobby sees to that... | |

Anyway, maybe it arises from the fact that majority of fellas these days don't want to wear condoms and therefore haven't had much experience of putting them on properly! If you want a job done girls, do it yourself, then we will minimise the risk of being called liars if the unexpected happens | |

Posted: 10/3/2009 7:43:08 AM | When I was married in the 1980s, and we used condoms plus another method (first a diaphragm and then oral contraceptives) for birth control, I experienced a fairly high rate of condom breakage. Then, about the only brand-name latex condoms available were Sheik and Trojan. I kept track of breakage rates and determined a half-life, the time of usage after which half of the condoms broke. The half-life for Sheiks were about 25 minutes and Trojans for 35 minutes.
This distressed me (the advent of HIV and my divorce and subsequent return made it even more distressing). I tried to find out information from people I mistakenly assumed would have access to and give accurate information. At that time, various CDC-trained people and groups were "educating" people about condoms and condom use. So I asked them about how to solve my problem, both in person and via mailing lists and received invective and insults to my intelligence. It is CDC policy to say that condoms, when properly used, do not break. This is based on a social decision that acknowledging that condoms break would induce people not to use them. This is the kind of logic that government officials find appealing. I analyzed this statement and realized that the word "policy" is not about matters of fact.
I have since learned and figured out a few things:
1) Condoms are only actually tested for 90 seconds of use. They're tested using a comically obscene reciprocating engine. I saw it on television. The guy was saying that 90 seconds was too short and "some men might have sex for as much as three minutes." There exists no appropriate emoticon.
2) A great deal is made of keeping condoms in air conditioning and not even keeping them on one's pocket for fear that body heat will cause them to degrade. I have never encountered a condom manufacturer who had the basic intelligence to realize that condoms are transported in unrefrigerated trailers, the internal temperature of wuich regularly exceeds 115 degrees, especially in the summer, especially in the South.
3) Yes, Virginia, size does matter. While condom educators frequently try to prove that condoms do not break by stretching them over their heads, I suggest that they also leave them there whilst rubbing their heads against a mucous membrane. Either the condom will break, or the miracle of suffocation will provide a valuable eugenic effect.
Fortunately, since then, a much wider variety of condoms have become available. I used to use the polyurethane EZ-On, with a 70mm flattened width. These were manufactured in the United States but not marketed here, though I could get them by mail order. (I was a very good customer, and once they even sent me an Official Condom Tester T-shirt free.) I found them snug but not strangulating, and I never broke one. Unfortunately, they are no longer made. I have switched to the Female condom with the retaining ring removed. I only broke one of these, and it was about 15 years ago. | |

Just in case I have a Faulty Condom ? you can never be Too sure, but thats "NOT" the Safest Way !!! to go about Having SAFE SEX !!! as if there is such a thing ??? as some of the people in this thread have had breakages with Condoms !!! etc
The safests way is not to have Sex at All !!! but there is No Fun In That is there ?

Posted: 10/3/2009 9:00:52 AM | Condom breakage: typical use: 17.4%. Perfect use: 2.0%. Posters have alluded to correct use. This includes:
- finding one that fits (get an erection, masturbate into the condom to see if that works for you).
- Check the expiry date.
- Some uncircumcized men like to pull back the foreskin.
- Leave room at the tip and squeeze out the air.
- Lube reduces friction, so if you go for a long time, re-lube or change condoms.
- Don't forget to hold on when you pull out.
Re: abortion - if it breaks, a woman needs to take Plan B as soon as possible, preferably in the first 24 hours.
Re: STIs: condoms are excellent protection for the parts that are covered.

Yes, they stretch a long ways so they will go on but the tighter they are, the thinner the barrier and the more easily they break. This is one of the reasons I am a believer in two methods of birth control. If a condom breaks and I get an STI, that's affecting me. If it breaks and I get pregnant, now that's affecting a possible child as well and that's where I am not ok with the risk. At 35 I have no STI's and no kids so I guess I am doing something ok. | |

Actually I heard about it from a friend of a friend, from another city, years ago. They never break during sex if you move very, very carefully, very slowly, avoiding pressure and pinch points, using tons of auxiliary lubricant and waiting a good five minutes before each reversal of direction. A common mistake people make when using a condom for oral sex is cutting eye holes. That will lead to breakage. | |
