Music that does not fit in the boxes and still is good

Jasper James has a new video out called rocket. I listened to her when a friend of mine had her on and I could not place a style for her music. It made me think how do people who do not fit in any of the terms we use for music market their music? I can't describe her music but as soon as I listened I liked it.

Has this ever happened to you?
If you have heard her music how do you think is the best way to describe it?

Yeah It is better than when Celine Dion came out and I though Barbra Streisand came out with a new album. Or how you can switch heads of Britney Christina and most top 40 pop bands.

How do you categorize Flight of the Conchords? Folk? Rock? Performance art?

What genre does Everlast go into? Folk? Rap? Rock?

Beck?
G. Love?

I could go on all day...

Some bands I have heard are so hard to classify, they become their own genre. Like there name is the genre. Simular to comparing a band to another.

Good questions iconoclast...I don't think you can file any of thse three artists into just one category, unless you make one up...lol

Everlast - Forack
Beck - Acoustida Punk
G Love - Jazzahoprock

You're over complicating things

Everlast = rap rock, alternative rap
Beck = Alternative Pop/Rock, Alternative Dance, Experimental Rock
G Love = Alternative Rap, Alternative Pop/Rock

Most of what you hear on the radio is some combination of pop and rock/dance/rap/alternative.

Actually you could put Everlast, Beck and G. Love in the folk bin, too. That is the thread that connects the three.

I'm glad you guys answered my question so thoroughly. I love the music forum.

Gorillaz... their sound is like no other. They are in their own musical category. A mix of Rap, Rock, pop with a distinctive Japanese anime flare. Pure musical genius IMO.

can we say Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca - who people say is avant garde. what is NIN - I've seen the industrialists say he's not theirs, but he's too heavy to be electronic as a genre??

These are the truly talented ones who push the limits and rebound. I saw a photo on lastfm of a guitar branca was playing that was a double body with the neck in the middle (above and below). What?

I will the first to admit that I don't understand most of what is going on here...but give me some Thurston Moore

I did look up "symbolic", and don't really see anything of interest or relevant to me, but I appreciate it and do follow up on all suggestions. It is lovely of you to take the time. thank you.

"Most of what you hear on the radio is some combination of pop and rock/dance/rap/alternative."

Yeah, but to repeat a sentiment I've seen posted before....somewhere, i't's gotten to the point that so much stuff is "alternative'" that alternative is now mainstream.

What about the Breeders? I'd say post punk???

I thought alternative was more edgy like AC/DC, Nickelback-ish ? Isn't it a huge range?

Well, Alternative has never meant an "alternative to mainstream" in fact I'd argue it's a mainstream term. It's a catch-all for the pop'ier post-punk bands of the 80s and 90s such as The Breeders, The Cure, REM, Beastie Boys, Husker Du, and The Smiths. Not so much an alternative to mainstream, but an alternative to the predominant classic-rock, hard-rock, soft rock, R&B, pop, and adult contemporary of the time.

Electronica is the same situation. Electronica is catch-all that came from the mainstream looking down at the variety of poppier electronic influenced artists coming up.

I loved with K.D. Lang came on to the scene and said she was a country singer. No traditional country singer would ever accept her into their genre.

However, I am a big Lang fan, she has the voice of an angel IMHO.
