| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 11:05:51 AM | Recently, I was reading about the second wave of swine flu and a possible danger of infection especially for seniors / elderly people.
Do you think it would be prudent to wear a mask when you go to a public place such as a shopping mall or a restaurant to meet someone on a first date? Would you go for the N95 type of mask or would a simple surgical mask be acceptable in such a setting?
|
| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 11:51:30 AM | | Why bother with a boring ol' surgical mask when you could have so much fun with halloween just around the corner. Cripes...use your imagination... | |

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 12:04:08 PM | I am so paranoid that I go out in a full military haz mat suit with rebreather even to do my grocery shopping

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 12:29:22 PM | OP Just this afternoon, outside of my local supermarket, I saw a man over 65, with a light blue mask on his face. It blended quite nicely with his denim shirt.
No problem with the masks, just coordinate the colors carefully with your outfit. And white goes almost with everything.
|
| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 1:43:37 PM | I thought this was funny. See, here in Canada they are thinking that anyone who is over 50 will probably have been exposed to swine flu the first time around in the 1960s, and will probably have pretty good immunity. They are more worried about the younger ones.
Besides, what's the big deal? I don't see anything to get hysterical about. The flu comes around every winter. People get sick every time. Some of us get the flu shot and don't worry about things. This isn't any different.

No self-respecting fashionista would be caught dead (excuse the pun) with a 'white' mask on after Labor Day. That is just too gauche. Now you could make due with a nice cream or taupe color. But I still prefer to match my mask with my shoes and handbag. One can never go wrong if your accessories complement each other.

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 2:09:53 PM | | I read somewhere, or imagined I could read it somewhere, that if a man performs oral sex on a woman it coats his nasal region with a naturally occurring flu inhibitor, greatly reducing his susceptibility to the virus. The prophylactic treatment needs to be repeated every 24 hours to remain effective. Side effects include blurred vision from broken glasses and lost contact lenses. If I can find the link I'll post it, but don't hold your breath, unless to practice. | |

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 2:35:36 PM | First on a serious note: PeggyI: We really ought to be careful what information we are sharing - "Health Canada has indicated that: Adults 19 to 64 years of age: As compared to adults over 65, this group has an increased rate of infection and a higher risk of severe outcomes."
On a lighter note: Tis the season to begin to think of that special Christmas gift - how about checking out some crafter (to be found at craft sales across the country) who is ready to make custom masks for all your loved ones. You could get them custom fit and in a variety of colors to match all your wardrobes. Don't forget to get them embroidered with your name or initials to add that extra special touch, and also ensure there is not sharing.

I'm so scared I hide in my bathroom with the exhaust fan on, and the door taped closed..
Do you know how dangerous that is? You're pushing all the air out...you're going to suffocate.
I haven't seen significant numbers of healthy people falling from this. Probably nor more or less than other strains.
I'm thinking about trying to catch me some...any takers?

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 3:31:38 PM | | It wouldn't help anyhow wearing a mask as they are only partially effective for a few hours. Also, the virus can be spread just by sneezing into hands and then the hands touching surfaces etc. Good handwashing practices are far more effective. | |

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 3:46:11 PM | I find it 'ironic' that Michael Jackson was ridiculed for that face mask.......and here we are wearing face masks in public! Seen any recent video of crowds in China, Japan etc? | |
|
| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 3:50:07 PM | | After all these years we're now being taught how to wash our hands, not cough and touch things that other's touch. And as far as Canada goes, have you heard that people who had the flu shot last year are twice as likely to become sick this year. Seems to me a bit of overreaction also. Just eat, sleep and take care of yourselves. | |
|
| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 4:48:40 PM | | I hope I am fortunate enough to get the vaccine. Good handwashing is essential. Under no circumstances touch your face unless your hands have just been washed while in public. I try to stand 4 feet away from people as well. The flu virus is classified as an airborne illness. Droplets are far heavier than spores and will fall to the ground fairly quickly. keep your paws away from your face | |
|
| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 4:53:14 PM | | I have a friend who is a grocery store manager in Houston, TX and when the swine flu first came on the scene, he mated a bunch of pig snouts with the masks for people to wear around. Hilarity ensued. | |

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 4:54:17 PM | I'm takin all the precautions I can.. But if I do get sick... I want Ms abby156 nursing me back to health... ---SoldierByte--- | |

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 4:55:17 PM | | The H1N1 vaccine is to be given at no cost to every citizen of Canada who wants it - compliments of the Canadian government. I will be in the first batch of people to receive it because I qualify as a high risk individual due to my compromised immune system. I will also be in line for the regular flu vaccine for the same reason. While I have never been one to get these vaccines, it has now become imperative that I take every precaution that is available to me to ensure and maintain good health. | |

| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 5:06:19 PM | Flues and masks......
Only came in here cause I thought we'd be talking about the 'other' precaustionary measures.
|
| Precautionary measures Posted: 10/3/2009 6:00:26 PM | 1st year I worked in a hospital (1982), I caught a flu ... off 3 weeks! thot I'd die!
2nd year I worked at that hospital, I caught a flu ... missed 1 day! no biggie!
worked in hospitals until 1993 ... and haven't caught a flu since ... I think, working in a hospital or similar environment, you're exposed to so MUCH and so MANY varieties ... that your immune system just kicks into overdrive and does its job the way it was designed to work!
I plan to combat the flu by ignoring the media announcments that "flu season is here!" and by eating right, staying hydrated, getting enuf sleep ... laffing a lot ... and thinking positive!

but ... if I HAD a mask ... I'd for SURE want rhinestones ... preferably ones to match each outfit! so ... lots of blues and greens ... maybe some black!
