British gas deal for people on income support.Page 1 of 1
Hello everyone

I was visited by a british gas sales man the other day and he told me they do special rates for people on benefits. I was not sure if he was having me on so i rang british gas and they told me that it was true. It works out that my £60 electricity bill could have cost me just over £40 if i had joined this scheme before my last bill. The customer service guy told me that british gas do not advertise this deal but if customers ask they will organise it for them.

My question is are there any special deals that companies do that we are unaware of and would you like to share them?

Thanks for you reply.

would you call them back and ask if they do deals for working single mum's on tax credits please.

I have had a spat with edf ...far to -long-a-story ..but the bottom line is ..they wouldnt take into consideratin when giving me an appoitment that I HAVE to do a school run twice a day ..on contacting the onbudsmen they made me privvy to the fact they CAN but FORGET to mention a two hour arrangement for situations like mine (can't sit in for 12 hours).

Not a deal as such , but certainly something worth knowing !!!

Funnily enough, I have just been comparing different companies, as I was/am not happy that the main suppliers are not dropping their prices in line with the drop in wholesale price

OVO Energy economy 7 has a very good deal, it is a fixed rate for 12 months and is expected to save me approximately £100 over the next year on a £500 per annum bill providing my consumption is similar. It has two rates, which are 0.08xx and 0.04xx, now compare those to EDF's economy 7, which has three rates, which are:

1) 1st 250kw per quarter = 0.1933

2) Remainder = 0.1185

3) Night rate (midnight-7am) = 0.0464

The "British Gas Web Saver 4" deal looks ok too...

Type your details into the following link and it should show what is best for you

I had a pre-payment meter installed, if I couldn't afford the fuel I couldn't buy it

I'm not surprised you couldn't afford it - pre-payment meters are the most expensive way to pay for fuel!

The government requires all utility providers (I think all, anyway) to provide socially-inclusive rates for vulnerable customers.

Read about it here:

British Gas:
http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/energy/our-products/essentials-programme.html?WT.seg_3=i100264

Southern Electric (as an example):
http://www.southern-electric.co.uk/Help/ForYourHome/PriorityPlan.aspx

or eon (who I notice give benefits checks as well!!! )
http://www.eonenergy.com/At-Home/Going-Green/Energy-Saving-Advice/Guidance-And-Caring-Energy.htm

BT:
http://www.btplc.com/inclusion/Needhelp/BTBasic/

Thames Water:
http://www.thameswater.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/corp/hs.xsl/639.htm

See, they all do it - and thank goodness they do otherwise the poorest people in society would be really suffering. Whether we subsidise them or not - caring for those unable to help themselves is part of what makes a civilised society, in my view.

Deal no longer applies to people on JSA or Income Support. BG have something called energy smart which anyone can sign up for, supposed to reduce bills.

southern electric have some good tariffs, and you get points for whatever you use put onto a card you can spend at argos in store.

i havent seen any changes for the worse, im paying less now for gas and electric (£25 a month on each) than i was in 1997! and im in a house now instead of a flat!

i dont know eh! you have to shop around, i found my deal on money saving expert its definitely worth a look to save a few £££'s!

I signed up for energy smart with British Gas, can only use it with my electricity as the gas meter I have isn't compatible. Instead of paying by fixed direct debit, I only pay for the electricity I use every month. This month it's 5 quid. I also have an electricity monitor which checks the amount I'm using daily and you can adjust your consumption based on the average usage for a single person, couple or family.

I think it's a good idea, certainly better than some energy providers who estimate all your bills and charge you more every month than you actually use in gas and electricity.

As i am on income support I am on their essentials plan. British gas took pity on income support people this year and gave us all £20 towards our winter bill. I didnt expect a thing and was surprised by the cheque in the post.

I moved to my current house one year ago and there was an EON pre payment meter, I was originally told I had to be here 12 months before they would remove the old tenents meter, when I rang back last month they told me it would cost me £50 to have it removed.. so I thought stuff this and rang British Gas, . not olnly did they change my suppy over within 2-3 weeks but they came straight out and removed the meter free of charge!!!

The rates seems pretty good too..

Yes would definatly like to know if they better rates for single working parents on tax credits.. it seems as though you have to be a mother sat on your backside to get anything these days... ie.. free school meals, housing benefits

Their essentials plan isn't available any longer, I asked about it a few weeks ago, they no longer do it for people on income support or JSA, I'm happy enough with the energy smart set up though.

I don't believe there are any suppliers doing cut price rates for people on benefits unless the person is over 70 and is on attendance allowance, as I said, BG no longer do the essentials tariff for people on JSA.

I'm on a deal with British Gas where the VAT is paid for the first year and was told that my rate was probably just as good if not better than the essentials tariff. At the moment I'm paying 23 quid a month for gas and elec compared to 59 with Npower so I'm happy enough.

Message 15 i still have the essentials plan written on my bills and it was on the letter that came with the cheque. I am not sure if it makes a difference where you live but i am still on the plan. I am glad you are on a good deal though as that was the point of this thread.

You probably got it before they changed it. Yeah I'm happy enough with the deal I'm on, particularly as I'm not earning just now, plus being in Scotland, there are times it's freezing up here when the rest of the country doesn't need to put the heat on as much.

Yeah, I'm quite impressed with British Gas so far.

No, as I said before, until 2 months ago I was paying 59 quid a month for gas and electricity with npower. I'm in a relatively small flat as well and I'm not a high user of either.

The energy smart with British Gas allows you to give in meter readings every month so that instead of them estimating what you will use and charging you accordingly, you submit meter readings every month and they charge you for your exact usage.

Which suits me fine, because on my limited income at the moment there is no point in me being grossly overestimated and getting a cheque back at the year end, I'd rather pay for what I use as I don't have a lot of spare cash. I'm also on no special rate because I'm not working.

Different suppliers also charge different rates for the power they supply.

Absolutely agree with everything put here.... My Water bill went from being 300 a year to being 140 pounds a year using the meter.....

most companies now encourage it.... what mine said was that if I didn't like it after a year I could change back..... but if you decide to then keep it, however if you move from the property then the next people moving in have to keep it on.....
