so, one of the attorneys i work with will have a baby in november. we're holding a shower for her next monday, and i'd love to make pink cookies. she's having a girl and the baby's middle name will be 'rose.' i'd love to make a shortbread cookie and add rose petals, but does anyone know of any other way to make the cookies pink? i don't want to add food coloring. i do have rose water, but it's clear, not pink.

Hey Juniper? You just took away my idea with the food coloring...but? What about Cranberry juice? Just enough to "tint" the dough? Tis a thought. I bet our rustygetsit would have an answer for you as she is always baking things....oh Rusty? Where are youooooo???

How about the liquid from boiled rhubarb skins ?
Or highly reduced port or black cherry juice.

VVV
The red in marichinos comes from red food coloring #3 or whatever one that's said to cause disease in rats. But then I don't think the OP is going to be serving them to rats, only lawyers.
Sorry lady godiva couldn't resist.

The juice from red Marashcino cherries could be used to replace some part of the liquid in the mix. I'm sure the red colour would come out pink in the dough.

Grenadine syrup.

Liquor stores usually have either fifths or larger and a specialty cooking stores might have it in the pint or liter bottle. It doesn't take much to get a bright red in dough, so a little would go a long way. Not much time to experiment, but for a batch of dough about 1 pound, maybe a shot glass SHOULD give a rose color.

It is very lightly alcoholic, but the amount needed would be so small per cookie, it wouldn't have any effect on those eating it.

I like the cranberry juice or strawberry puree suggestions, but then I drink a lot of cranberry juice and love strawberry and other fruit purees.

Why not get edible, as in not sprayed with anything, pink roses from the florist and chop them up and add to shortbread. I have done it many times. Also do use the rose water for flavor. You get pink bits, which actually looks nicer, I think.

If I were just dying for a natural way to color them pink, I would definitely use a little beet juice. It will be so little that you will not get the flavor of beets and it would take less of it than pomegranate or cranberry, plus, those would leave a flavor. The pomegrante wouldn't be a bad flavor at all though, with or without the rose water.

i already planned to do that. i have some really nice dried food grade rose petals in a mixture of red and pink. i've done it before and it does look nice.

i like the cranberry juice idea because the cranberry flavor should complement that of the roses.

thanks, everyone, for your suggestions.

Looking in my fridge I have two of the Naked brand antioxidant fruit juice drinks, one is Pomagranate Acai, the other is Cherry Pomegranate Power.

They both are very strongly colored with natural fruit, but the Cherry Pomegranate one is especially dark and strong red, a lot more so than cranberry juice, and the flavor is not as astringent as cranberry juice but it is still tart, just a bit sweeter. My bet would be on the Naked drink vs. the cranberry juice..

Offhand I would rate the cranberry juice 10-15% of red food coloring in it's ability to color, where I would rate the Naked drink 85-90%.

beet juice would likely work exceptionally well and in such a small amount it wouldn't affect the color.

Freeze dried strawberries are easily made into a powder so they'd color and not be affecting the liquid/solid ratio of the cookies.

You can also though buy organic natural food colorings from some health food stores.

Freeze dried strawberry powder....What a great idea Girly!

Wishing, I use the POM and BomDia brands of Pomegranate and Pomegranate Acai which would never work to color pink any any small amount because of their darkness. Where I live, I have never seen the Naked Band, it sounds organic, but I am definitely going to look for it. I have discovered a couple of really good health food stores within 30 minutes of me that would probably get anything I ask for. Have you ever tried the Acai/Cacao blend? It is really excellent.

thanks, though I did mean to say beet juice would be needed in such a small amount it wouldn't affect the taste It's a common colorant in foods. But yes, freeze dried strawberries are sooooo delicious...

I know girly. I use beet juice all of the time....I guess we DO need to specify plain cooked and not pickled LOL

I think people are afraid the beet flavor will come out, but it doesn't.

i like the idea of cranberry because i'll actually use the leftover portion. i love it with vanilla vodka

i also tossed around the idea of bergamot petals, which i can get pretty easily.

Hi Juniper, mmmm I love bergamont. I have only ever had it in dried form, which isn't pink, so I do not know.

The main reason for me to say not cranberry as opposed to beet is because thre really isn't any liquid in shortbread cookies. To get enough cranberries juices in there to color the dough pink would be a lot and not work for the recipe, but beet juice would require so little juice that you could adjust only the smallest amount and not compromise the recipe.

I hope it all works out well for you and your friends new delivery

cranberry juice (at least the kind i've gotten) has an intense, deep crimson color. so i think a drop or two will work nicely.

fresh bergamot (monarda didyma) tastes like candy. the variety known as scarlet bee balm has the sweetest flavor. the hummingbirds love it too!

MMMMMMMMMm I am going to have to look for that!! I wonder how I have missed that all of these years.

I also thought of another intensely bright red floral sure to color anything when steeped in water, or just powdered dried buds...Jamaica flower, or Red Hibiscus. That would dye anything.

i love hibiscus!

maybe i'll do sugar cookies instead of shortbread. i do love shortbread, though.

but, attorneys will eat just about anything. and i care more about how it looks than how it tastes. and i think it would be easier to make sugar cookies pink.

Too funny,, I'm having a cup of hibiscus tea now, as I check out the latest posts on my favorite forums. The color is great, isn't it? What I'm drinking is such a deep red, it almost looks purple. I think it would be a great choice to shade the cookies a pretty pink..
