When a three point turn - turns into a 9 point turn, is it time to think about changing your car or doing a driving course ???

If someone can't manoeuvre the vehicle, how the hell can it be safe for anyone, if you are behind the wheel ???

In particular, and I know I am generalising, Four Wheel Drive vehicles ... Can't drive one don't own one until you can !!!

^^Snuck in there caves.....
Personally I think 4WD vehicles should be used for just that....4WDing.

But they seem to have become the domain of silly middle aged women dropping their kids to and from school.....I guess its nice to think that if you have a crash due to your own driving ineptitude, the people you hit are gonna die instead of you in your tank.

And dont get me started on bullbars......these things are killers and should be banned in my opinion.....unless you are driving in the bush and likely to run smack into a bull.

Status symbol or buffer for your own lack of driving skills...im not sure which. Both I would imagine.

In Aus I would suggest that these are more for Roos that Bull.......
Ive only hit one (admittedly in the country) but the poor old Herts rental didnt fare too well......Skippy just bounced off into the dusk................

But there is always the odd dopey pedestrian that would look good mounted to them.

As to driving skills.........they get better the higher up on the road you are...apparently

I sat in the shopping centre car park and watched one woman try and get it out the carpark. It took her 9 movements to get the car out the spot, I muttered under my breath until my four year old girl asked "Who's an idiot Mummy ???".

I just shook my head ... grrrrrrr

how many 4x4's are hubby's/business tax write off.... ?.. or bought for the once a year holiday with the caravan/boat..

here you go love.. your new car... .. just what you always wanted....
a nice sedan wouldn't qualify... as a potential work truck.... for tax reasons..

I wonder if there should be an extra licence endorsement and testing for the drivers of the larger 4x4's... over a tonne, say ... to see if the intended users are capable of handling the monsters...

Good. Can I borrow it?

As Hilly said 4wd's are status symbol...but they're also fvckin' dangerous. Statistically, in a collision between a 4x4 and a normal car there is more chance that the 4x4 driver will be un-harmed and the other driver will be killed...when compared with collisions between 2 normal cars. Add that to the fact that most 4WD's are more difficult to maneuver and there's a recipe for increased road tolls

Actually in a collision, the 4WD is most likely to roll ... Problem is the driver doesn't know how to drive them. They are so different to other vehicles, in order to drive one, you have to learn about their handling. And know how to drive skillfully.

ok.....so i live in the city....and have been considering buying another 4x4 so i can go 4x4ing.......so because i live in the city...does that mean i shouldnt be able to buy one???? and yes my last two 4 wheel drives got used regularly as 4x4's.....but i had to drive them thru the city to be able to go 4x4ing.....no i dont agree with the mums using them just as a family vehicle.....if u want a vehicle that will carry more then by a van or people mover...but i do know of people who use their 4x4 every day during the week as a run around vehicle....but on the weekends use it out in the bush or on the beach as a 4x4?? do they cant have their 4x4 anymore to pursue their hobby???

dj .. all it means to me is, if they are going to own one, they should know how to manoeuvre it or becomes unsafe ... it is a different style of vehicle and those that aren't familiar with its' handling in all situations shouldn't be behind its' wheel.

There are courses to learn how to drive these things ..

I hate 4WDs too, they block your view. I couldn't move out of an intersection yesterday due to the 4WD next to me blocking my view of oncoming traffic.

I agree they're mostly status symbols. I see more women (young mums) driving them around suburbia than men.

So as I live in the city own a four wheel drive according to you people I am not allowed to drive it as my every day car, well guess what bad luck and tough unless you want to buy me a second car and pay for its upkeep then I will keep using it the way I do. Did you ever think it is a life choice, people buy them not just for the once a year holiday, they are used for weekends away, day trips off road, they get used a lot more than people realise. Go to double island point at some stage over summer on a weekend and have a look at the 4wds there.
Bullbars are dangerous............. bullshit the idiot driving the car is dangerous, until you have hit a roo or a wild pig you don't know what a godsend bull bars are. Having hit a pig at 100kms without a bullbar and nearly wiping myself out, and hitting a roo at the same speed with a bullbar, I know why I make sure I have a bullbar on.
Don't tar every 4wder the same way I have seen plenty of people who just can't drive. I agree if your gonna drive a 4wd make sure you know how to handle it and what it is capable of doing on you. They have a completely different centre of gravity and will tip easier than a normal car due to there height, but then so do vans.
Can't see around 4wds, geez how do you get on when there is a delivery van or truck next to you? They are the same height and length approx.
Rant Over.

notsticky needs to read the post again.

I said learn to drive it if you can't handle it. If it takes a nine point turn to do something that takes a normal vehicle three points, you can't handle it and need tuition.

Otherwise drive whatever you like. I don't care. Just don't get in it without knowing how to control it.

Agreed...and I often see wild pigs roaming the city streets.

Still I imagine it stops pedestrian carcasses denting your paintwork!

notsticky : do you live in mossman'sydney

the highest ownership of 4wd's in the country is mossman..not many pigs or roos there..
if you got a half ass'd reason for owning one, sure by all means.
but if you own one just to drop of the kids at soccer when the car-park gets muddy or plan to go offroad in your twilight years well then your a tosser and adding to the problem.

most 4wd's I see, have never seen a bloody gravel road.
stand at the corner of any busy city and count em

I lived in North America for a few years and had one of those big kick-a$$ pick-up trucks. Where I was, they were a necessity for going through 3 feet of snow on the roads in winter. They drive much differently to a car - the centre of gravity is higher and they roll around. They take a while to get used to and anyone that thinks they can just get in one and drive it is kidding themselves.

But they sure do give you a feeling of security. I almost feel vulnerable in a small car...

ummm..... are you referrring to someone backing out of a parking space? a 3 point turn is for turning 180 degrees - to end up driving the other way up the street basically.

totally agree that driving skills are essential, but i see people in all sorts of vehicles, who id really rather not be sharing the road with, its probably just the same horse different jockey thing, i live in a town where practically everyone has a 4x4, but some of the tourists coming through and doing the hairiest things in the snow etc, in their nice sedans would stand your hair on end!!

I own a 4x4 and i live in suburbia but mine goes bush at least once a week, bull bar houses the winch gets used for everything from snigging post to skinning cows, but i will agree that people who just own a 4x4 for the staus symbol and take it out one every 5 yrs to splash a bit of mud up the side of it should take a closer look at themselves.

What pishes me off tho is the knob heads who cant read the tyre plackard inside the door of their vehicles and fitting illegal tyres to their car voiding their insurance (those that have it) leaving the poor people that they hit in debt or worse.

You can have your soap box back now........

I know what a three point turn is for. But in getting out of a space, it took 9 wheel and vehicle adjustments for her to manoeuvre .. that is way too much by anyone's standards ...

not by the standards of Driving Instructors!!! Seems the "three point turn" is now defunct as a pass......... as long as u dont hit the gutter or stationary vehicles u can take as many manoeuvres as u need to get the turn completed successfully.. its a pass if its 3,6,9 or more!!!! (only know this cos my daughter got her licence about 18 months ago and I don't have to chaffeur her anymore )

getting a license is a whole lot harder than it used to be.... probably due to upping the "quality" and wanting new drivers to have the skills a lot of long term drivers have forgotten ..... 3 point (or more) turns aren't a problem.. I havent needed to do one for ages.. its the ones who dont know how to give way on a roundabout thats more disconcerting!!!!!

what one needs to go through these days sheesh.. just glad I got mine back in the day where all u had to do was bat ur eyelashes and wear a short skirt to get a pass

I'm one of the "have one" and "use one " category of 4WD'ers .... actually I have two - a wagon and a truck . I go bush often ... not to splash mud around or play in puddles with them but to be able to negotiate difficult terrain properly and safely. I do agree that people should do some sort of extra training in driving 4WD's if only to make them more aware of their vehicle's vulnerabilities and abilities. I really dont think anyone is safer in a 4WD in a prang either - our human fragility is the same whether we are in a mini or a sherman tank . Also, 4WD's are bigger, heavier and not as forgiving as normal cars when you make a minor mistake .... not only do they tip easier, they also slip and slide about more and are harder to pull up than the average sedan. What I dont understand is how do people financially justify driving a big 4WD around town as the family taxi ??
I'll just shut up now .......

You left out the people who can't do a reverse-park, who amongst us has never been stuck in a line of traffic created by somebody who just has no clue how to do one?
