Just an insert from what was said

NEW ORLEANS – A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."
Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.
Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said."There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."
If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.
"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.
Bardwell estimates that he has refused to marry about four couples during his career, all in the past 2 1/2 years.
===========================================================

Now my thing is do you think he should still be allowed to be a Justice Of The Peace even though he is doing what he is oding. Because I see it like this and that his Job is to marry people NO MATTER THE RACE OF THE PEOPLE GETTING MARRIED. What would you have done if you was denied a marriage license and you was an interracial couple and am adding a twist here which will be Interracial Of Any Race and being denied ?

FYI:
I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE HIS LICENSE TAKING FROM HIM IF HE IS NOT GONNA DO WHAT HE IS GRANTED TO DO BY LAW

That is so sad. So his opinion on inter-racial marriages supercedes the law in LA? BTW, what is the law in LA regarding this matter? He should step down.

OP According to the copy right Rules can you provide a Link and the Author name who wrote the Article.

That's what I've been told you must do every time you copy and paste or reproduce someone Post, blog, thread, Or news paper or news articles.

this is the whining crap MSG I get when I copy or reproduce an article I just read from few posters.

Also while I'm not a stickler for rules, plagiarism is plagiarism and forum rules in order to keep the site from have legal issues is that anything used from a source needs to be cited.

His post was not from a thread...it was a blog...and not his.

He did not give credit to the author...it was copied and pasted.

Yes, you actually DO need to attribute credit. It is fine to use other's thoughts as a leaping off point, but only if you give them credit.

He says he's not a racist, he just doesn't believe in mixing the races?! I wonder what his definition of racist IS exactly?? I would laugh, but it's not funny. He ought to step down or people ought to take action to get him to step down - petitions, letters to your congressman/senator, get media coverage.

As best I can recall, a Justice of the Peace has the "Ability" to marry people. Under American Jurisprudence, ie the law of the land, the fact that someone has the ability to do something, like marry people, does not mean that the person can be compelled, or forced, to exercise such ability.

A similar situation would be that a doctor has the absolute right to decide who he/she will, or will not, treat, and what procedures he/she will, or will not perform.

While I don't agree with this JP's actions, I believe he has made valid points, and supports his positions.

As far as this man losing his job, he can be removed from office quite easily. He may be impeached, or people can simply refuse to re-elect him, when his term of office is over. Until then, he is a Magistrate (Judge), and may do just as he pleases within the confines of his court.

I would never live in the south.

Not only is racism prevalent, but the people there think it's a way of life.

I am originally from PA
I use to think this till i moved to NC.

The racisim that is down here is very in the open..and can be dealt with pretty clearly.

The racism that i saw back in PA was very behind closed doors and not so easily spotted.
Many people got the short end of it and never knew they got it. jobs memberships ect...

There are backwards people everywhere and they are dying out everyday...thankfully

Louisiana...does not surprise me that they allow this person to be in government office.
If there is a law then there needs to be a lawsuit and take it up to the supreme court till it gets overturned.
If there is no law then this person needs to be removed from this job and He should be tagged like cattle (big ear tag with a number) that way he can be spotted at his next interview.

I understand his thinking but clearly do not respect it.
It's so wrong from the children to these quote relationships not lasting long...

Do i think he's a racist...probably not.... as racist hates one race or another...
but one thing i have learned is you never know whats in a persons heart
what he is doing is placing his values of what he thinks is right on the public though a public job and frankly there is no place for that anywhere.
You are suppose to do your job as the law requires.

This thread saddens me...though it is a clear abuse of power so it should be fixable.

Inpune I agree with you. One secound with google gave me this link
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091015/ap_on_re_us/us_interracial_rebuff

One point I'd like to make is that they were not denined a marrage license. The JP said he wouldn't perform the _service_ and sent them to another JP in the parish who would.

Now I'd like to play devils advocate Does a priest have to marry whoever comes through the door without regard to religious conviction?

Personally I think the guy has his head up his rear.

People in a number of occupations may feel the same way but few are allowed to express it within the confines of their employment.

He's ONLY a Justice of the Peace. No different than a clergy man who has received his "certification" online through Cracker Jacks.

It's his opinion and his perogative to express it, that is afterall what our country is built upon. Simply because you do not concur is no reason why he is wrong or you are right.
It's a point of view.
You disagree with his.
He disagrees with yours.
Should you lose your job because he thinks your opinion is wrong?

I'm certain the couple were able to obtain a marriage license elsewhere just not from this man.

I don't agree that he should have his license revoked.

Each business owner is entitled to deny a customer for a number of personal reasons that have nothing to do with being fair to all.

From the aspect of religion, I believe there are any number of couples who are denied the saying of vows because they have been divorced before, have "lived in sin" prior to the wedding, etc.,

Should those priests and pastors lose their jobs also?
Where do you feel the line is here?
And do you really want that to be an across the board application?
I doubt it.

I'd like to hear why you feel this way.

Do you feel that way about bartenders also? They should only be able to deny serving someone under age?

What about porn stores?

What about stores that refuse to sell spray paint to anyone under 18?
What about ID's to buy videos and video games?

How far to do you want to judiciate retail?

This situation is being muddied by individual's personal feelings and sentiment. It's a business. The man gets PAID. He has the right to refuse service for ANY reason he wishes. It was his choice to state the reasons why....

I lived in the heart of the French Quarter for nearly 7 years. It is the most back-assward city and extreme blatant political corruption. After Hurricane Katrina when they re-elected Nagin (who by the way lives in Texas) I started my process of moving out. There is no way this Judge is going to get punished, he isnt going to even get a slap on the wrist.

Thank you for the Link,,SIXSEAS,,,, I wouldn't be such a beatche about it, but if it goes for me it goes for all others rules are rules, Right Margo!

Well this is utter nonsense, what the Foque is next segregation, no lets bring back the Spanish Inquisition.

To deny anybody marriage due to interracial is like handing out speeding tickets at the Daytona 500 International Speedway! NASCAR will love that. Hold on Mr Dale, going a little to fast around the second turn I'll have to write you up a citation.

It goes to show that racist and ignorance is alive and doing well in America

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way,"

Racist attitude and outrageous comment. In my mind he is a racist.

"I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

"Them" (they) being the key word. Me and them.

He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said."There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

He's playing God. So he's going to single handedly do a kindness for unborn children to what he concludes is a problem in today's society. It wouldn't surprise me if this benevolent citizen isn't wearing a sheet on the weekends and burning crosses.

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said. "I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Everyone is equal. What a racist ass. He's way off base here. Sickening.

Lose his job? How the hell did he get it in the first place??? That's what I'd like to know.

At least the black one didn't get lynched That is progress.

PS: Race issue comes up normally when people have "napoleon complex" and the only way to elevate their status is to assume some kind of inborn superiority. It works in the head but not in the real world. In the real world you are what you put out, in the long run.

I spent time in Savannah, Georgia when I was in the Army....

I tend to think being black and living in the south would be hell on earth.

When people talk about the South, they're not exaggerating.

It really is racist...........and blatant.

Oh, give me a break. New Orleans is something like 80% black. Hard to be "hell on earth" when you're the majority.

Raphael, I believe you are correct about the population demographic but it is still a racial attitude in many people in power there, no matter their color. It is a power play using their own personal values (or lack of them) as their standards. Being in Louisiana and especially in a place like "Tanga Be a Ho" as it is refered to as, allows this to happen because noone will really refute him let alone want to take his place or find someone to take his place.

The man gets PAID. He has the right to refuse service for ANY reason he wishes. It was his choice to state the reasons why....

Yes except that it is NOT his business. He gets PAID by the STATE which unfortunately for him includes the "interracial people". What a load of crap. I can't believe anybody will even support his reasons or actions.
Even if he doesnt get paid by the STATE, he sought a license to serve ALL and not a select few who believes in his warped ideas! This is akin to the case in St Paul/Minneapolis where Airport Taxis with muslim drivers were refusing to carry passengers who had ALCOHOL in their Duty free luggage because it was against their religion! Once you acquire a TAXI license you should abide by the regulations governing it.
