Posted: 10/15/2009 5:38:10 PM | Well, I figured that I should probably write one of these. If you're someone who is still looking...hang in there. It's worth the wait. :)
I'm 24 years old, and lived in Dawson Creek, BC. I had recently left an 8 year relationship when I felt that the man I was with didn't have the same goals as me, didn't want the same things out of life that I did, and didn't treat me the way that I (or any other woman) deserves to be treated. It took me a long time to realize that I needed out, and I needed out quickly. The ex tried to commit suicide in an attempt to keep me with him, which only reassured me that I was with a crazy and had made the RIGHT decision to leave. It was not easy, and I did lose a lot of friends over the whole thing...but when it comes to your life, you can't take chances. I never wanted to be one of those abused women who says "oh, he didn't mean it." or "he'll never do it again". So I left.
My next relationship was with a younger guy...who left me for a 16 year old guy...who incidentally looked like a girl. Fun, hey? lol
Self esteem at a low...I signed on to POF... "just to see what's out there".
Let me first say that i'm not a perfect 10...and have never had much luck with guys. In an online world where your photo attracts people to you, I thought the result would be disappointing. Boy, was I wrong. I went on a LOT of dates. I dated more in 4 months, than I had in my entire life. Seriously. It was crazy. lol
I met a lot of new people, and clicked with a few...but for one reason or another, things just didn't work out. Disappointed...I headed back to POF.
Someone messaged me, asking me out on a date and wanting to get to know me more. Obsessing over his profile like crazy, looking for any signs that he was a psycho...I decided not to date him due to his age. He was 12 years older than me. I had put my age cap at people 30 years old and younger, willing to deviate slightly, but 6 years past 30 was not "slightly" in my mind. I told him politely that I was not interested, and we moved on. A month later, out of the blue, he found me still on POF. He convinced me to go on ONE date with him, and I gave in. We've been together ever since.
This December will be our one year anniversary. I moved to Fort St. John where we shared his small aparfment for 6 months before moving to an acerage where we could have our multitude of pets. His 15 year old daughter decided to live with us as well, and it makes for a busy household with a teenager, 4 cats, a dog, and 4 horses...plus fish.
I am happier than I ever thought possible. I've been in plenty of relationships...and I can honestly say that even when I thought I was happy...it didn't compare to this. I'd have to say it's like going to the optometrist who says "holy crow...legally, you shouldn't even be able to drive without glasses. You need glasses now! How have you managed like this for so long?" and you reply with "I don't know...I never knew I couldn't see well, until you told me I couldn't..."
Good luck to those of you still waiting to find someone. POF opened up the dating field for me. I can honestly say that I never would have met Mike, if not for POF. We lived an hour away from eachother, and neither one of us are super social. lol We tend to spend time at home with the horses, watching tv, going to the movies or out for dinner, and just enjoying eachother's company.
Who knew a year ago...that I would be where I am now, and crediting POF for my finding that special someone to share my life with? :) It amazes me every day.
