| Some people really need to lay off the tanning beds! Posted: 10/18/2009 4:28:05 PM | I don't believe you get vitamin D from tanning beds, you just get cancer.
A friend of my mom's died from doing too many beds in a day. It cooked her insides!
Some guy was bragging about how great he looks for his age and what a great tan he has...geez, it is just sad. I guess they don't see their wrinkles because the light has blinded them?

Yeah, I heard the rumor about your mom's friend, it was running up and down the scare-emails, a while back.... Snopes and the Mythbusters say has not / can not happen.
Or was your mom's friend trying to get a tan in the microwave maybe???

I really think she had heat prostration which resulted in a heart attack. I guess technically she wasn't cooked on the inside, but it makes for a better story saying that she was cooked.
But melanoma is scary. Oh heck, I can get a sun burn in the dark. Sunscreen is a way of life with me.
EDIT TO BELOW: I seriously remember hearing on TV that UVA is turned up on tanning beds and that is what makes them an unsafe way to get D, that although you can get D, it isn't the same as from the sun.

| Some people really need to lay off the tanning beds! Posted: 10/18/2009 6:09:09 PM | The truth is that tanning beds have the same effect on the body as sun - regarding vitamin D. During the sunless months however, 10 minutes in a tanning bed, provide adequate supply for one week. Anything more than that is damaging.
To be cooked inside from a tanning bed, you will have to lay there for 36 hours continuously, and by then you will have probably no skin left...

The word preventable is only applicable if you try to PREVENT it from happening in the first place... sheesh

| Some people really need to lay off the tanning beds! Posted: 10/18/2009 9:19:24 PM | | Hurray for melanoma! There are easier ways to get vitamin D and other ways of getting a tan that don't actually hurt your skin. But like smoking, or anything else, it's got a few known consequences, and a few risks... so it's a personal choice. | |

LONDON - International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.
For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."
A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal. Story continues below ↓advertisement | your ad here
The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.
The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.
"People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."

msnbc.com Most lights used in tanning beds give off mainly ultraviolet radiation, which cause skin and eye cancer, according to the International Agency for Cancer Research.
The classification of tanning beds as carcinogenic was disputed by Kathy Banks, chief executive of The Sunbed Association, a European trade association of tanning bed makers and operators.
"The fact that is continuously ignored is that there is no proven link between the responsible use of sunbeds and skin cancer," Banks said in a statement. She said most users of tanning beds use them less than 20 times a year.
But as use of tanning beds has increased among people under 30, doctors have seen a parallel rise in the numbers of young people with skin cancer. In Britain, melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is now the leading cancer diagnosed in women in their 20s. Normally, skin cancer rates are highest in people over 75.
Previous studies found younger people who regularly use tanning beds are eight times more likely to get melanoma than people who have never used them. In the past, WHO warned people younger than 18 to stay away from tanning beds.
Cogliano cautioned that ultravoilet radiation is not healthy, whether it comes from a tanning bed or from the sun. The American Cancer Society advises people to try bronzing or self-tanning creams instead of tanning beds. I think I will go with yoga for relaxation/destressing. BP is 106/60. I think that it is working.

| Some people really need to lay off the tanning beds! Posted: 10/21/2009 10:04:24 PM | 1. I've never touched a cigarette in my life. 2. I drink a glass of wine with dinner every night. I have been drunk 4 times. 3. I've never touched a drug. This includes weed. I don't even drink coffee or pop. 4. I'm not overweight. My diet is the typical Mediterranean diet. 5. I exercise.
I'm not saying people who use tanning beds are bad people. I'm saying they're making stupid decisions. Are you saying they're making good decisions? It's one or the other.

| Some people really need to lay off the tanning beds! Posted: 10/21/2009 11:01:31 PM | Funny... although drinking, smoking etc are all bad for your health... people still choose to do them because well, they probably enjoy them and far enough, if you're happy with it and you know the risks, then all the power to you.
But ironically, generally those who tan do so to 'look better' right? But in the end, it will end up making them look worse. I think that's where this issue differs from others. It's contradictory. I can't say I don't enjoy laying out in the sun in the summer, but I put sunscreen on and try not to burn, but I enjoy the heat and the good relaxed mood it puts me in so for me it's worth a few wrinkles when I'm 40. Hell, it's the sun after all, there's nothing more unnatural about life than avoiding the sun. Except maybe not drinking water... lol

| Some people really need to lay off the tanning beds! Posted: 10/22/2009 7:48:35 AM | As I said, my bp last week was 106/60. I do yoga almost every day. I have naturally high cholesterol, so I have a choice, I can do drugs or watch my diet. Guess which I choose to do. Check out the thread on a man that questions dating a woman that smokes to see my opinion of smokers. And right now I have my pics hidden, but if ya want to see a pic of me, email and I will send ya one. I seem to get less crap from women and some men when my pics are hidden. I don't quite get it, but fine, right now I have them hidden.
Healthy body and mind are important to me. I am very blessed that I meet someone that feels similar.
15 minutes in the sun is all you need to get vitamin D. It is more difficult in the winter, but with the statistics, I think supplements are a better choice than melanoma prospects.
