| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 10:02:54 AM | With the football season over,my TV viewing has dropped of dramatically! Aside from the news, theres really not that much thats worth watching, its all reality crap. It doesnt seem that long ago that Don Burke had his gardening show but, other than that,TV networks spent their money making comedy and drama shows. Ive got no idea why anyone would bother going to NIDA now when you need no acting ability at all to appear on TV. Its not as though great TV is impossible now,'The Sopranos' would have to be one of the greatest TV shows ever made, but it was made by a cable channel willing to take a risk on something challenging. And not just drama, where is the modern day 'Seinfeld'?
And not just TV,what was the last classic and timeless album released? When will the next one be? In the computer age of downloading songs, are we headed towards a time where people download the singles they hear on the radio and not bother buying the album?
Movies too. Will Ferrel and Adam Sandler are no Robert de Niro or Al Pacino, yet theyre 2 of the most bankable stars for movie companies. Their movies remind me of the old Police Academy movies, kinda amusing, but ultimately disposable.
I guess thats my question,is modern culture an 'entertain me now' culture or are we just in a temporary drought of timeless art?

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 3:44:21 PM | Gee I'm glad you brought up Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler.....................I'm in one of those moods...............here goes.
They would have to be two of the worst so called actors and they're not even very funny comedians..............they are both pretty boring and their humour is sick alot of the time. I happened to catch Will Ferrell at the end of Wedding Crashers and the character he was playing was just pathetic. SO no I don't want to be flooded with stupid movies with terrible actors every other week. Oh and then there's Vince Vaugh and that annoying Owen Wilson................arrrgggghhhhh!!!!
Back on topic - I agree. There is absolute crap on tv at the moment and it's about to get a whole lot worse as summer arrives.
Blockbuster here I come........................LOL.
BTW for those that can't cope try giving the GO 99 channel a go..................it has Seinfeld, Fraser and other shows that are worth taking a look at.

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 5:02:22 PM | Sounds like you need to broaden your entertainment genres mate. I know something you may like. You know dungeons and dragons, now don't laugh, and I am talking the one with the dice and not computer games (though they're good too). Well there's one called BloodBowl where you get all the creatures from Dungeons and Dragons, elves, halflings and demons and dragons and you put them on two grid iron teams and have at it. Think: Lord of the Rings only they're arguing over a ball and not rings. It's actually pretty good but alcohol and other recreational drug use is mandatory for best enjoyment. It has a little following like those Warhammer tournaments you see in that GamesWorkshop store in supermarkets. Some of the classic games have been between a team of 24-ft tall StormGiants and 3-ft halflings. The Storm Giants won that one, basically one giant picked up the ball at the start of the match, held it over his head and proceeded to trample the enemy team to death. Not called Blood Bowl for no reason.
What you have is a set of points for each team, and you get to spend them any way you want on players. Tougher players cost more money. You can have an elven wizard on your team, which is really handy because at the start of the game he just Fireballs the enemy team and casts a Wall of Force in front of them, then casually walks over to place the ball on the goal posts. But of course the enemy team might've spent their points on a demon who isn't really bothered by fire and is immune to most magic. And then you can use tactics like ambushing the enemy team as they arrive at the venue on their bus, spend of few of your team points and you can hire assassins to thin their numbers before they even get to the field. You get the picture.
No idea what this Will Ferrel crap for.

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 5:45:11 PM | Tele sucks, but at least having cable TV, if there is absolutely nothing on you can always pay for a bit of porn and while away an hour or two. | |

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 9:41:48 PM | I recommend a show like "Rock of Love".....there is an abundance of silicone, stupidity, and a 40+ year old washed up rockstar pretending to want to find a partner when in fact all he wants is to nail every girl in the show. Watch that one for a few weeks and you will find yourself racing back to the Adam Sandler/Will Ferrel movies in no time! | |
|
| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 10:56:46 PM | | There are 3 great inventions that have been available for a few years now , they are digital TV , a DVD player and a Video store . | |
|
| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 11:17:49 PM | ^^^^^^Have all of those Mr Smartypants but DVDs can be costly and I'm not about to hire one every night plus weekends plus the ones the kids want on the weekends.....................any other brilliant suggestions???
BTW robfish I watched "Rock of Love" out of sheer boredom one night and I actually thought it was a comedy show.............the one I saw there was a redhead who decided she would make everyone else look bad compared to her so she could have him all to her little greedy self..................it's a scary program. And he makes me want to puke!!!
I would recommend watching it for a good laugh!

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/19/2009 11:45:46 PM | ^^^Oh yes, the devillish lil redhead called Lacey.....reasonably entertaining when there's nothing else to watch. You're lucky you haven't seen the new season of that show, the last two weeks have involved silicone mudball, the truckstop pole dancing competition and last but not least a mental breakdown on a speed bump!
What can I say, my dvd player isn't working, I don't have digital tv, and the majority of video stores don't have VHS anymore so i'm stuck watching trashy entertaining shows along with Adam Sandler and Will Ferrel movies....the footy may be over but cricket season is about to begin so all hope is not lost!

I guess thats my question,is modern culture an 'entertain me now' culture or are we just in a temporary drought of timeless art? I guess time will tell Mikey.I have heard some really great music coming through lately..and some of it may even prove to be timeless but,it seems to get lost in the barrage of "marketable product" type music being fed at an alarming rate to,and helping to create as you say, an "entertain me now" audience via such mediums as radio and video hits programmes.I guess it has always been that the younger generation provides the biggest target audience...it just seems that hit singles are being pumped out by the thousands and so readily available that the audience is becoming more fickle...in today..out tomorrow...more bent on instant gratification than an appreciation of music as an artform.I know it's not just music...but I am a musician and it's what I notice most in reference to your post.

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/20/2009 11:06:01 AM | Photoman is pulling your leg acorn,'57 channels and nothin' on' is the title of a Springsteen song.
As for the music? Im wondering where todays 'Highway 61 Revisited' is going to come from. That album always used to rate really highly in the polls of the greatest albums of all time so I bought a copy in the early 90s....if memory serves me correctly,it was originally released in 1966,but it blew me away the first time I heard it!
I reckon 'The Sopranos' will be regarded as great TV in 30 years time....but 'Aussie Ladette to Lady'?....'The Apprentice Australia'?....'Big Brother'?....'Border Security'?....'Getaway'?....'Backyard Blitz'? Id run out of puter ink if I listem them all! lol

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/20/2009 5:52:17 PM | The tennis is coming.................yeah!!
Actually robfish there's a new one I think you'll love (again I stumbled upon it by accident flipping channels this week). It's called "Momma's Boys". It's kind of like The Bachelor except there are 3 guys and a whole group of girls and they can choose whomever them like and as long as one guy likes someone they won't get eliminated. The catch is that their mothers stay in the house with all the girls and then try and influence their sons on who they prefer!!! It's a classic..............

Photoman is pulling your leg acorn,'57 channels and nothin' on' is the title of a Springsteen song. D'oh.Now that's not nice Photoman.Didn't your mother tell you yo play nice with the other kids?...this raises the age old question.."why cant people from the east and the west just get along??
Thanks for clearing that up Mikey. Not being a huge follower of Springsteen I didn't know that...Now...pardon my ignorance once again, but if you get SBS????,check out a show called Skins. It's a nuts and bolts soapie about teenagers doing what they do and set in England.Pure gold!!
|
| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/21/2009 4:03:57 AM | Death by reality TV show!!!
Is it really a ratings grabber, or are people so easily entertained. Get home, switch brain off, switch on and tune in to zombievision.........
Dancing with the biggest loser in the stars with a secret millionaire, and become a rockstar, all while whipping up a pheasant an chocolate gateau .......OH for the human tragedy, trials and tribulations and when all is done we can feel assured that WE picked the winner!!!........For the measly sum of 55C (plus your std mobile charges) you can "have your say" cast your vote and be part of the action.......
But what else would people talk about at work the next day?????

| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/21/2009 4:05:54 AM | | Sorry Acorn, I did attempt to send you a message with the gag but alas. We presently get around 9 or 10 free to air channels with ABC2, SBS2, SBS News, OneHD etc. They tell us that will grow to around 15 channels as most of the others (7,9, 10 etc) double up with a second stream. Even with all of that I remember last Saturday that there was sport on EVERY one of them. Too bad if you're nor a sport fan. | |

|
| 57 channels and nothin' on Posted: 10/25/2009 6:43:27 AM | Well there was certainly something interesting on last night...................yep a repeat of the famous Hey Hey It's Saturday episode that caused a stir however minus the stir!!!
That's right folks Harry Connick Junior sitting in as a guest but no Michael Jackson lookalikes. I thought perhaps I was watching another new episode as it was getting late and I was getting tired but I remembered after Harry sings and Daryl calls him over he mentions the inappropriateness of "that" skit and Daryl apologized and all was forgiven and they carried on with the show.
Last night it had been edited right out along with the actual skit...................
Shame on you Channel 9 - trying to pass off a repeat minus the controversy. Do you really think viewers are that stupid?
