| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove "Liberal Bias" Posted: 10/22/2009 7:55:45 AM | I thought this might be from The Onion, that satirical newspaper out of San Francisco but no, this is for real. At least one prominent conservative thinks the Bible is too liberal and wants to remove what he considers "liberal bias" from it.
Andy Schlafly, son of Phyllis Schlafly, the founder of the conservative Eagle Forum and spearhead of the anti-ERA movement, has launched a Conservative Bible Project to eliminate what he calls a "liberal bias" in the Bible. This rewriting of the Bible is not a new translation by biblical scholars returning to original sources. Instead, this project takes the King James version of the Bible and substitutes "conservative words" for "liberal words." In addition, some sections will be removed. For instance, Jesus' words on the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do," will be removed. In addition, the story of the woman taken in adultery ("Let he who is without sin cast the first stone") will also be removed.
Schlafly is founder and owner of Conservapedia, his answer to Wikipedia, which he considers as having a liberal bias. Below are links to his article on the Conservative Bible Project and also another article in Conservapedia describing exactly what are "conservative" and "liberal" words.
Could anyone possibly take this guy seriously?

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 8:37:29 AM | | Dude...this stuff ain't new at all. Look at the Jehovah Witnesses and the Mormons. I'm not sure of the time table behind the Jehovahs, but I know the mormons are less than 200 years old and were started right here in America. Everytime some guy or gal decides they don't like anything about their religion, they change it to suit their thought proccess. Why do think there are so many relgions out there? | |

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 9:09:42 AM | Personally I have always felt the New Testament at least has a very liberal , almost radically liberal / leftist slant to it at its heart, and I think that's a natural part of it (that is , if the man whose life they're talking about therein is not a complete fabrication -- and I don't believe that to be the case). So I think it's impossible (if not to say flat-out laughable) to try to recast Jesus as some sort of prototype of a modern-day American evangelical Right-winger for example, if that's anything like what they actually have in mind. But anyway, like the other poster said, I guess it's not a new phenomenon for people to pick and choose what they like or don't like from their holy writ, more or less.
I say this in regards to the "debate" about Islam and whether it's inherently "peaceful" or not as well; the religion, or the God if you will, only winds up resembling the individual men (or group of men) worshiping Him (or It). So therefore, if you have stern, ultra-conservative, even perhaps mentally unstable and /or potentially violent men, then you see accentuated much more so those particular ancient qualities of the fierce and vengeful intolerant aspects of God. Where you see people who are generally kinder, more even-tempered, less aggressive, or perhaps just saner in some cases, then you see likewise more so the merciful, compassionate aspects of that God or faith being emphasized.

In any event, the Bible was composed arbitrarily by men, who left out lots of books and letters and events, does that bother you? Or does it only bother you that a so-called 'prominent conservative' is going to re-write it?
checks OP religious preference, sees non religious, get's answer that OP only wishes to bash so-called 'prominent conservatives'

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 9:57:25 AM | I've heard of the guy but I don't know for what.
I think it's sad that we have come down to this... when tenets of basic human compassion, understanding, forgiveness etc is broken down into Liberal versus Conservative. It really does expose how our political and social belief systems have degraded into a severe mental sickness.

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 11:17:18 AM | | What this guy is doing is foolishness, but it is my belief that the current version of the Bible has about as much similarity to the original as the Harry Potter series. | |

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 12:46:26 PM | The problem with the Christian fundamentalists is they aren't fundamentalist enough.
Oh..... they like the parts they agree with. Those parts which go along with their own little fantasy.
But, they hate those parts they don't agree with . Those parts which don't agree with their fantasy.
Is the Bible the truth ? Of course it's the truth. They just don't understand exactly how true it really is.

I agree. I wonder who decides what belongs to what side? How they pick what belongs to what side? And individuals from either side are "thrown out" or "traitors" for agreeing/thinking that something from the other side makes sense.
I believe that a well devided population is easier to control. I read a little about this guy (the one re-writing the bbile to suit his needs/goals) and I've come to the conclusion that he is short of a full set of dishes. This makes him scary...they are usually the kind that come up with some of the more radical ideas.

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 2:45:37 PM | | The same article about the Republicans rewriting the Bible appeared in my local regular newspaper. I wondered how long it would take before the Republicans did this. Scholars of the Gospels know that Jesus definitely did not promote the Republican party line. | |

If you were about 20 years older, you'd recognize the name. His mother spearheaded the anti-ERA movement and is still well known in conservative circles.
You jump to some mighty conclusions about my religious orientation and my wishes. I choose "non-religious" on my profile for a variety of reasons. As for "bashing," please point out where I've bashed anyone. This guy is real and comes from a prominent family who has been a pillar of the conservative movement. One of my friends, who is attending a prestigious religious college, called Schlafly's project "the height of hubris." I find his project bizarre and troubling. It is one thing for people to interpret the Bible differently, quite another to rewrite it to suit your own agenda. Whether one is religious or not, the Bible is a significant influence in our culture, for better or worse, and Schlafly, in my humble opinion, falls on the side of "worse." This is, if anything, a warning of the kind of mentality that seems to be gaining ground these days. I find it alarming.

You are correct in this statement. In fact they neither Christian nor fundamental. People should stop calling these right wing radicals Christians and Conservatives. There are neither. Call them what they are - Republicans.

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/22/2009 8:19:28 PM | Is this one of two threads on this same topic ~ ??
or have they hacked the old one down?
I did some research of this guy ~ Andrew ~ His the 5th of five children to a bible thumper, right wingers family. ~ His mother busted the ERA and the women's lib movement. She encouraged women to stay home and be good mothers ~ but she herself never did. ~
Got a gay brother, ~ bet that was a turd in their punch bowl. ~ They don't talk about it.
Home schooling or on-line schooling is their gig. ~ Born into money and all the trapping of a good life. ~ Their purpose in life seems to be directing everyone else how to live their lives.
I'll go back and count the posting numbers.
No , I checked the numbers ~ so this must be the second thread of this guy.
earthpuppy started the first, if memory serves.

Well gosh and golly gee, you're right. Didn't do a thread search because it never occurred to me to check on this one. I'll have to go look at the other thread. Thanks.

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/23/2009 4:32:13 PM | No ~ I don't think so ~ this is different. ~ One would need to understand the background and family unit this "Andrew" came from. ~ More a hard liner neo-Christian bunch of folks.
A few notches up the ladder from the Jerry Farwell crowd. ~ and would like to consider themselves bedrock GOP. ( like that means something today) .
I was wondering if they were writing out all the gender bias that the bible contains as well, ~ the answer , ? Hell No! Man is woman master ! ~ They enjoy life the old fashion way ~ where a woman rules only by proxy. ~ "traditional " stepping back in time 40 years ~ Cut the old man off ! quit cooking and grip a lot until they get their way! LOL!
I've learn to deal with the ladies however they want to play it ~ but it's mighty confusing for a young man and young woman. Like Andrew, you need to be born and raised in it and find a mate that has been as well and just maybe you'll have a "functional" family.
However I question how functional it might be, ~ many of the people I know from this kind of setup seems to always have a fairy in the closet. My ex in-laws, Chaney's casa, Reagan's household. ~ etc ~ I might be over reaching, but it doesn't stop me from noticing such things.
Some kind of gender identity issues ~ Mom is the one with the balls in the house and the old man won't put her in line, she's left to rant and rave. ~ This behavior is misunderstood by children.

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/23/2009 5:18:32 PM | | It's the devil's business to distort the Word of God. It has been done in the past by folks on both sides of the political spectrum. The devil knows there is a ditch located at both sides of the road, and on any question of truth, he is just as happy for a person to veer too far to the left as he is for a person to veer too far to the right. As long as he gets you in one of them, he does not care which ditch you end up in. In Jesus day the main conservative bunch were the pharisees and the main liberal bunch were the sadducees. Although they profoundly disagreed with each other, in the end they both joined forces to crucify Him, howbeit for opposite reasons. | |

| Conservative Rewrites Bible to Remove Liberal Bias Posted: 10/23/2009 5:47:26 PM | | In a society like this what difference does it make...nobody cares about any virtues spoken of in the Bible except those that can be defined as a free ride...for whatever a man/woman sows that shall his neighbor through excessive taxation also reap...who cares about work or repsonsability just pay my bills for me,who cares about marriage or fidelity just pay for everything when it falls apart...who cares about anything in the bible just pay the consequences for me so i don't have to.....and so i can live the same life i would have lived had any of these things ever mattered to me to begin with. | |

Hahaha, isn't that the ideology behind Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. Look, not everyone is looking for a free ride. You're making a huge generalization with that post you made.

Historians have proven that Jesus actually existed. It's all the stuff he is said to have done that is left to debate.

Where is the scientific proof to all of this?
To me, the bible is a fairytale that was written in a time when people still believed the world was flat. Depending what country you live in, you are told a different fairytale.
The same type of fairytale goes way back before the fairytale about jesus when people used to make stories about the sun and stars. The funny thing is that the stories about the sun and stars hold strong similarity.
