Former Celtics star Antoine Walker is broke and in debt

In 12 years, Antoine Walker(notes) made more than $110 million playing professional basketball moderately well. Take away taxes, throw in some adidas endorsement money and a "NBA Live 99" cover, and he's left with, what, $60-to-65 million?

Whatever the details, it was a big chunk of change, which, amazingly, wasn't enough.

That's right, during the last several months, the once multi-millionaire athlete has been pursued by multiple financial institutions for unpaid debts.

In fact, according to The Boston Globe, "Employee No. 8" owes more than $4 million to his creditors and is facing felony check fraud charges in Las Vegas. All of this at the age of 33. Wild.

Now I know what you're thinking: How in the world does somebody — not named Montgomery Brewster — even begin to blow through that amount of money?

The answer: fairly easily.

"[Walker] liked to move in an outsized entourage; his mother estimates that, during his playing days, he was supporting 70 friends and family members in one way or another. And speaking of his mother, he built her a mansion in the Chicago suburbs, complete with an indoor pool, 10 bathrooms, and a full-size basketball court. [...]

Living at the Bishops Forest condominium complex in Waltham during the Celtics season, Walker turned the pavement surrounding his home into a virtual luxury car lot — two Bentleys, two Mercedes, a Range Rover, a Cadillac Escalade, a bright red Hummer. Often, the vehicles were tricked out with custom paint jobs, rims, and sound systems at considerable added expense. He also collected top-line watches — Rolexes and diamond-encrusted Cartiers."

Condos, luxury cars, watches ... I guess that'll eventually force you into bankruptcy. Especially when you're not investing any money or collecting $200 with every fifth or sixth roll of the die.

But Walker's lavish lifestyle wasn't all "me-me-me." He was also a generous friend and teammate who had custom suits made for coaches, routinely picked up giant team dinner tabs and, when there were funds to spare, gave to underprivileged youngsters. He was basically spending money like it was going out of style.

And it did.

I guess Biggie was right after all: mo' money, mo' problems.

That's the reason why. Coming up craps and picking losers.

You know this is a sad issue facing sports and no one really wants to talk about it. When Shaq was going to court for divorce, his living expenses were detailed and they are crazy. Maybe he will be broke next. Sprewell was working in a soup kitchen. The problem is these athletes have no life skills to manage money and they emulate the Rappers. Very sad.

LOL just think though i mean if he just sat 2 million dollars aside in a savings account at a bank with a 5% anual interest rate return each year, he would have 100,000 dollars alone in the money that he would have collected off the interest each year that he could have lived off of alone without ever needing to touching his 2 million dollars in that savings account. I mean, this is basic savings and interest 101, which is something soo simple to do and the easiet form to living off of interest and yet he couldn't even mange or didn't even care (take your pick) to do something as simple as that. Sad very sad.....

Looks like to me it was someone who was not mature enough to handle that much cash.

I'm not all that surprised to see so many big name athletes having such financial problems. Whether it's $110, $110,000 or $110,000,000 you still need to know how to manage money. A lot of Walker's expenses seem to be on pretty noble things (ie supporting family, friends, charity, kids, etc).

The big problem seems to be that these guys are never taught how to manage money. In many cases these basketball players come from relatively poor backgrounds. Suddenly they are thrown into a world where there isn't anything they can't buy. They are surrounded by people who just want to get a piece of them. How many of their accountants have just been counting their money instead of teaching them how to invest, spend, alott it? Of course these athletes need to take responsibility for their actions.

^^^That's a lot of generalizing there. Athletes do get financial counseling when they enter professional sports. It just fell on deaf ears in Walker's case.

College sports players should be required to take a course in Business Math so that this type of stuff doesn't happen if or when they become pro athletes.

A lot of people want to be rich so they will never have to worry about money again.
The problem is..... when you get to be rich, all you worry about is money.

People like Spree and Walker dont know the value of a dollar and dont live in reality. When Spree was offered 9 million contract his response was "9 million?, I have to feed my kids!"...no value at all.

I also have heard many stories of athletes with a lot of "homeboys" who like to spong off there money.
