| New Feature : Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 12:34:40 PM | There's a new way to message members now directly from their Profile.
Right next to their photo, and separating the often annoying ads of rotting teeth and flabby bellies. I like it ! No emoticons available, but it's great to send a quick short note while the profile is right in front of you. Hope Admin keeps it.

| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 12:57:51 PM | | Seems like this would cut into the site's financial model, so I'm surprised he did it. Now instead of 3 page views to send a first contact email (profile page, email page, sent page), it's 2 page views (profile page, sent page). I mean, it's good for us (though not that particularly helpful necessarily -- how much effort did it take to click 3 buttons instead of 2?), but I can't see how it would help the site out. It's not very likely to lead to more first contact messages sent. | |
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 1:56:31 PM | yes, i noticed the new quick message feature. there's also now a quick reply box when you open a message.
i'll concede the utility of the quick message - one can compose a message while looking at the profile. but, i fear it will promote only more of those short notes some of us receive ("hey, beautiful", "wanna chat?", and the like). on the other hand, those who are inclined to send those notes already exist, so, perhaps, it will make no real difference.
i really don't see the utility of the quick reply - it only saves you one click.
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 4:02:17 PM | Another redundant feature - what's the point? One Click less? Could have accomplished the same thing by moving the Contact User Button.
More importantly though - it's only available to people with pictures
I guess this is supposed to promote showing a picture? - that'll teach 'em to hide I guess ?

| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 5:13:29 PM | I've just (purely experimentally, you understand) sent a friend a 'quick message'.
Interestingly enough, once I'd sent it, I had a message at the top of my screen telling me that POF strongly suggests that I contact the following users. Guess who the 'following users' were?
Trapped Ticket & some other geezer!
You sure this isn't just an extra advertising feature for you mods?!?!
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 5:45:04 PM | ^^^ Now thats VERY strange as almost all the gals that show up that POF strongly suggests I contact are really gorgeous! And you got trapped and ticket???
I AM JUST KIDDING!

You sure this isn't just an extra advertising feature for you mods?!?!
A lot of these goofy features are skewed when you're a forum poster , as whatever criteria these “hokey” features work on, are also based on a user's site movement with the assumption that one primarily looks and contacts local profiles etc etc.
As forum users, our online site movement, includes looking at tons of profiles and contacting people that have nothing to do with our actual mission. Consequently, these features start piling up useless data on which to base these unfounded assertions.
That’s the long and short of it ....
I had a message at the top of my screen telling me that POF strongly suggests that I contact the following users. I’ve yet to see this wording on any of my pages ...

... I just tested it and all I got was some BS scam ad showing some badly photo chopped dude, telling me how I can get ripped in 4 weeks – hell, I can do it in one night with a good bottle of Stoli ...

| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 7:34:42 PM | So in all the messages I have replied to there is no way to attach gifts now either that I saw. So no more buying shots of tequila for replies?
Oh well.

|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 7:45:39 PM | If you click the blue text link "Reply" you can send gifts, smileys and attach a rose.
If you click the "Send quick reply" button you are not offered any of those extras.
Perhaps admin is making the streamlined version the default in order to reduce network traffic and bandwidth required for sending those graphics?

| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 7:52:18 PM | To MSG #3
If you have a minimum word requirement for messages it works for these "quick messages" too.
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/28/2009 8:27:12 PM | | I've just used this function, and though it works well, I think converting it to an IM in some way, would be more beneficial. Just my two cents worth. | |
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/29/2009 8:24:45 AM | 'Quick reply' may encourage women who get many messages a day to send off a message when they may not have otherwise bothered, thereby reducing the number of threads started complaining about being 'read/deleted'?
Personally, I prefer to reply the old-fashioned way, with the use of a handy list of emoticoms at my convenient disposal. How else can I get across the point that "one look at your pic made me feel like and your profile drove me to "?
And quite frankly, my enormous wit is enhanced by the use of to show just how goddam hilarious I am.
See? | |
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/29/2009 9:44:24 PM | OK ... the Quick Reply Box also appears when clicking on a message WE sent to others. What's the purpose of that?? To send ourselves a reply?? | |
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/30/2009 10:01:31 AM | | The quick message system shouldn't be available if you are unable to message someone by their requirements. Other than that a neat feature. | |
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/30/2009 11:03:23 AM | ^^^ True With the normal system, as soon as you try open a message window it tells you that you cannot message this member due to whatever restrictions. With the Quick message...you don't find that out until you have composed & tried to send. Not sure how hard it would be for Admin to implement, but it will be annoying to some. Particularity to those that never get past the pretty pictures before they message.
It would be useful on all the profiles if the Quick message window, or the Message userXXX buttons didn't even show if their filters don't allow the viewing member to message them.
I have mainly found it to be useful with members that I have already connected with. I can send a Quick note, without scrolling through their entire profile for the umpteenth time.

| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/30/2009 12:13:48 PM | I now see what you mean, Trapped. I was regularly on this site for over 2 years before I made any posts and up until that point, the match features always gave me women that very much fell in line with my standard search functions. But I've noticed lately, I'm starting to get very random matches, including women who are many miles from me, which never happened until I started posting in the forums. On the plus side, I'm seeing tons of new faces. On the downside, most of them are like 6 feet tall, so that's not really doing me a lot of good. So I don't know about this NEW feature, but that OLD matching feature sure creates a lot more site traffic once you venture into the forums.
And thanks for telling us about that flaw, Mizz Demeanor. Nothing sucks more than spending over ten minutes on an email, hitting send and having it evaporate because of some quirk in the system (or in that case, because you didn't match the person's criteria and didn't realize this beforehand). I mean, I usually copy my messages before hitting send, but every now and then I forget, and usually at the worst time...
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/30/2009 6:48:53 PM | One annoying aspect about this Quick Message feature is it does not fetch from my mail settings my default subject line.
After having to endure this feature for a couple of days I would prefer to have the option to disable it, for I would do exactly that.
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/31/2009 12:48:04 AM | I'd like to be able to disable it, too. The regular reply button shown the profile or mesage you are replying to already.

| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/31/2009 11:11:32 AM | | I don't like it -- more messages, less decent content ...I vote for a way to disable it on my profile -- PLEASE? | |
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/31/2009 11:48:34 AM | I stand corrected. If people are complaining of more messages, then maybe it is helping the financial model (though I still have to believe this is canceled out by the "one less click" per message overall).
It takes some getting used to. I still found myself opening a new tab so I could view the profile and write my message at the same time -- which obviously isn't necessary anymore (at least until it is disabled).
|
| Send Quick Message Posted: 10/31/2009 12:25:46 PM | this feature is completely redundant. I dont understand what all the fuss is about. Its alot like those paper towel dispensers that detect the motion of your hand in front of them and spit out a towel. Useless. It actually takes LONGER to get the paper towel than it would if you just grabbed it from the beginning....because now you have to wait for the paper towel to dispense, and STILL grab it anyway! But people love it, and restaurants and airports pay extra cash for this type of thing. And we think its better because we are told its better. Same idea here. Nothing has really changed.
If the site wants to actually make a real change around here, figure out a way to get the IM's back, and stop hiding behind the "third party" excuse. (there are alot of other "third parties" out there...its just a matter of putting in the effort).

| Send Quick Message Posted: 11/3/2009 8:10:29 AM | | Why do the the emails have to have a subject line? That is something I don't understand. I write letters, no subject line, I send emails, no subject line, I make phone calls, no subject line. Subject lines are a waste of programming. | |

Providing a subject that is relevant to the topic of the message is both appropriate and polite. Moreover, as far as I am concerned formatting your missives with a subject line is a way of you showing respect to your correspondent.
Some people receive adequate numbers of messages, both on POF and regular email, exchanging multiple messages with individuals, and if they wish to go back to the message it makes it easier to find.

| Send Quick Message Posted: 11/3/2009 8:55:05 AM | | Geez, this isn't a business, this is a social site. I can't imagine things being that serious. When I was dating and got a zillion emails a day, I didn't read the subject lines. It was what was written in the email that was important. Most people use a default subject on here, thus the subject is meaningless in an email. There is a difference between the business world and a social site... | |

Geez, this isn't a business, this is a social site. Consider the people you are writing to may feel differently than you in this matter. You have the choice to show respect in all your forms of correspondence. Best wishes.
With respect to the subject line on POF, yes, I have a default subject line, and will often replace is when appropriate., as determined by the message.
