When you download, always save the file to your desktop if you are not certain of the source (instead of opening or running the file). Then you can open the file location (in Vista) if you want to look at (explore) what was loaded.
My QuickTime Player download, for example, included a bunch of other Apple software that I did not want.
To get rid of any unwanted files you will have to do one of two things (and I do both)- 1. Open to file location in computer - c drive - explore - (file name)-open file location- highlight and delete files. 2. Go into Programs and Features (vista - options might not be the same in XP but it's easy enough to find - it's a list of programs installed on your computer). delete the files. To permanently delete, empty the trash bin, but I'd wait for a few days - hold them there till you're sure -EXCEPT FOR VIRUS FILES-
Some programs have more than one file, so it can get complicated. Depending on what you have, you may want to go into the actual software to look for deletion options there. But remember, it's easier to get rid of files that are not installed. So don't install (run) your downloads till you're sure you want them.
Also, make sure you uninstall programs only when really needed, and you know for certain what they are. IT IS VERY EASY TO ACCIDENTALLY UNINSTALL SOMETHING IMPORTANT SO GET HELP. Also, Incomplete uninstalls can leave fragmented files. I always defrag and do a disk clean up after uninstalling progams.
THIS IS FOR A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT ONLY. If you are not knowledgeable of the control panel in Windows you need to find a friend who is and get help.
CRITICAL TO REMEMBER. IF YOU BELIEVE A FILE MAY BE A VIRUS -DO NOT OPEN THE FILE.
HIGHLIGHT, RIGHT CLICK, DELETE, AND THEN EMPTY YOUR TRASH BIN IMMEDIATELY.
I hope this helps...but like I said "don't try this at home" unless you have knowledge and experience at some level with your operating system.

Yes it is possible. An ActiveX control is a nice method of downloading files to a users PC without them knowing about it. An ActiveX control is a powerful tool whether you mean it for good or bad.
There are other ways of course, depends on where your getting your downloads from.
Oh and dont download to the desktop there is a folder to download files to C:\Users\$user$\AppData\Local\Temp
Where $user$ is the user name he uses to logon with

| Download problem. Posted: 10/28/2009 9:35:55 PM | They could be partial/incomplete downloads of the music he requested.
Packet-Injection is also possible, it's always good practice to verify the download with the checksum.
Filesharing is very risky, it's one of the best places to get a rootkit/trojan.

| Download problem. Posted: 10/30/2009 12:51:02 AM | | Yes you can, and if you uninstall any program you will need to remove it from your firewall because that is the one thing that is'nt automaticly removed during uninstalling; for example, after uninstalling "google Earth" you will find this in your firewall> "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\googleearth.exe" that leaves holes in your gateway to the internet and you need to remove ie because the program will put them there but will not remove them for you in Windows XP where files can sneak in through an unused empty TCP/UDP open port/s and snuggle in your system and you wonder where it came from? and how it got there? hmmm... | |
