South Africa for World Cup 2010
Posted: 10/29/2009 12:05:45 AM
So as of now, myself, my mother, and 2 friends have booked 2 weeks in Johannesburg for the world cup. I know how dangerous it is down there, especially with Johannesburg being the worst. But....we scored tickets for the opening match and ceremonies, and 5 more games down there, so that is where we will be staying. My questions are...
Has anyone been there recently?
Do we need a personal bodyguard? Some people say yes, others say just don't walk around at night, and don't act like a complete tourist and we should be fine.
Places to go in JoBurg during the daytime?
Any hints/tips would be appreciated!

my best friend who is south african just got back. he says the following.
DO NOT wear any kind of exterior jewelry, watches, earrings, necklaces
DO NOT take money out of an atm at any location except a mall. where it is very populated and only durring daylight hours.
DO NOT flash your money, count it in a toilet stall or somthing. money = target.
DO NOT roam the streets at night.
LOCK all your hotel doors and get a safe if possible.
stay where the tourists and game activites are, do not go off trying to be a native south african, the differerance in demenor is obvious to the natives. You will get taken advantage of.
The new generation of south africans are more cultured but the older generation are not as forgiving. Just be aware and stay where you should be.
have fun you lucky duck!
