H1N1 vaccine. Are you getting a shot?
Posted: 10/29/2009 9:55:07 AM
Hi Folks,

Is it just me or does it seem like there's just too much hype about this shot?

The numbers I've seen don't seem to support the amount of urgency placed upon getting everyone vaccinated, although I've heard that health officials are saying that the virus spread is no where near its' expected peak yet.

What do you think? Are you getting the shot?

Nope.

It is only suggested if you are in the high risk grouping. Just be vigilant in your health care and take your vitamins kids!

Yes, absolutely, there's no reason not to.

So far there's been 12 H1n1 deaths in BC. http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/alert-alerte/h1n1/surveillance-eng.php

There's a wave of H1N1 sweeping across the nation right now so why not get vaccinated?

What's a H1N1,,,,a new computer game????? As far as a I know reading all the advice etc from the "experts" I've already had it,,,and feeling like a peach today. I wonder how many people died from the "regular" flu since the countdown started with the 12 BC deaths???? Anybody know or are they even counting those ones right now because of this H1N1 thingy.

And no,,,I won't get that vaccine just as I haven't gotten anything injected into to me since I was old enough to legally decide for myself. Surprisingly,,,I'm still here.

No. Never yet had any "flu shot", at all.
Have never had any flu in my adult life, unless I did-- not knowing it perhaps
was disguised as a "cold". ??
Although I am curious to see next week if I will be forced (severely urged?)
to be vaccinated as I am in health care.

I've never ever had a flu shot. I don't plan on getting one either.

I previously worked for places that had a lot of people who came to work sick anyway, if I was going to get sick I was going to get sick because employers don't tell their sick employees to not come to work. For retail this even worse since sick employees spread it to customers and other people who work in the building.

It's not a matter of if you are going to get sick, but when. I find that flu symptoms are no worse than food allergies for me, and would rather just get sick from the flu if by chance it happens.

Because I fall into one of the "high risk" categories and also because of the angioplasty surgery that I am having, I got the shot on Tuesday from my Dr.
The LAST thing I want is to get sick while I am trying to recover.

This is not just the "regular" flu. It knocks you on your azz for at least a week. I always say no when my Dr. offers me the yearly flu shot, but for H1N1 I am going to say yes. FOR ME, I think it would be wise. Although, I know some people feel they do not need it, and that is their choice.

It seems to me that more folks die from the everyday flu than the H1N1. I guess if folks want the shot, then let them have it. However, it definetely is overhyped. H1N1 has been around since 1977. It's nothing new. I guess the birdflu scare the news drummed up didn't pan out so they are working us over with the swine flu scare. (I already had H1N1, so I guess I am covered. It was a bitch for a few days, but with meds and the normal rest, I made it.

As I stated in "Falling through the cracks with boosters"
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts10518503.aspx

I got my flu shots on Oct. 28th, two days ago.

Actually I got 3 vaccinations; the H1N1, the seasonal flu and much to my surprise, one for Pneumococcal bacteria.

I am in one of the groups of people with underlying health risks and have been previously advised by my doctor that as my year of birth is only three years prior to 1957, that I should get it. The earlier you were born prior to 1957 the higher the probability you have already been exposed to a cousin of the H1N1 and would be already immune to the virus.

So on the 28th I called my doctor's office to inquire about booking an appointment. The receptionist advised me to go the recreation complex where vaccinations were being administered.

I found a registration table and I did not have to line up. After advising them of my age and the health risk and a short bit of paper work I waited in a chair for my turn with the public health nurse. Within 15 minutes later she was proceeding with the task. After the vaccinations I had to wait in another room for 15 minutes to see if I developed any severe reactions. I feel fine and so pedaled myself home.

Learning from the newscasts how many people in other communities have stood in line for hours to get a vaccination, or maybe not even get one at all, I consider myself fortunate that I got my vaccination without any significant delay.

The bad news is that when I woke yesterday morning I could barely crawl out of bed. I ached all over and was very uncomfortable. I had a mild headache too. I was forced to cancel my appointments and I stayed home all day, mostly resting in my recliner.

I have had the seasonal flu shot for several consecutive years now and have never had a reaction at all, so this was a bit of a surprise. By evening I was starting to feel better.

So if you get the H1N1 shot be prepared for the possibility/option of getting all three shots and also you might not be able to work the next day.

Hopefully none of my fishie and forum friends will be stricken with the H1N1, and if they do get it will not experience any severe symptoms.

I am pleased to report that today I feel fine.

I got a flu about 14 years ago, only one ever. I don't get flu shots, but i dunno. I don't really see the need for it. But I'll call my doc, get her advice.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Balled Eagle: That's interesting that they gave you all those vaccines at once. I've read on the Health Ministry's website that there has been some concern with an increased number of people who've already had the traditional flu shot, who then contract the H1N1 flu, so many doctors are doing the H1N1 shot a week or so before the regular flu shot this year.

I'm still undecided, but the "herd immunity" factor may lead me to set my concerns about the vaccine aside and just get it. For those that don't know what "herd immunity" is... the more people who are immunized, the more likely the virus can be stopped in it's tracks which is much better than having the virus spread like wild and potentially mutate into new strains.

Cheers!

Between 400 and 800 people die in B.C. from the seasonal flu or pneumonia each year.
The swine flu has killed 12 people in BC since the pandemic started.
That's right folks 12

"Oh but this one has the potential of being so much worse."
Don't they all?

What's with the scare? Could it be the pharmaceutical companies deliberate scare in order to cash in? Lets face it, when was the last major issue that the pharmaceutical companies cashed in on? Maybe its time for a new scare and the H1N1 is it.

It knocks SOME,,,,not all. Just like any other flu. I'm sure there are people here who can tell ya how long they have been knocked on their bums with the so called "regular flu".

Just like some people have to take a week off of work for a hang nail,,,there will be some that will carry on with the bug just like they have a slight cold. Then there will be people with the sniffles that will be asking for a month off,,,because they KNOW they have this pig bug. I believe the "worry" is the so called "transferring" of the bug to those that are weak.

OP

I have been following in the news the announced plans with respect to the timing of the seasonal flu vaccination relative to H1N1 vaccination. At first they (Public Health?) were going to delay the seasonal until January, but evidently have changed their minds.

Perhaps it makes better sense from a logistics perspective to give all the shots at the same time because it requires very little extra effort administer them both, or as in my case, all three, when implementing a nation-wide program.

Each individual vaccination takes perhaps only a minute, which is a minor component of the whole process of arranging facilities, nurses, supplies, advertising the details of where and when, support staff at the registration desks, etc.

******

I'm not getting it purely because I'm terrified of needles.

While the subsequent effects were decidedly unpleasant, those needles are so fine and sharp I didn't even feel any discomfort whatsoever from those injections. I suspect getting a tattoo would be far more uncomfortable.

There is nasal spray flu vaccine , for H1N1. But you would have to phone your local health unit, to see if it is available.
And so what if ss does not like needles nor do I hate the dam alcohol wipes and then they prick you . And I have Tats .

My tattoos hurt like hell; the outlines anyway. But those are different needles than an injection.

My fear focuses around syringes. Tattoo needles are quite different. Phobias are.. by definition, irrational so I can't even begin to say that the difference MAKES sense, it just is. *shrug*

<<< has had the swine flu, it is nasty, lasted two weeks with pneumonia at the end. The shots are too late for a lot of us

I just wished they could have got them out a little sooner, I think they missed the ball on this one by quite a bit.

Coming back to this place feels like entering a haunted house after being in the land of the living for so long...

...or maybe a graveyard may be more accurate...

Either way, it was in the 'real world' that I got sick, got bored, and decided to take a peak in this door once again, funny how that is...maybe the swine flu has made me delirious
