| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 4:44:39 PM | Halloween falls on a scary Saturday, and so many sorrowful senior singles, sitting solo...sorry, I couldn't resist the opportunities for such alliteration...
I live out in the woods, so not much chance of trick-or-treaters, and no date, so...if you are in a similiar position, what would YOU do?
>Sit at home, and watch the third game of the World Series (like me)? >Go out solo (in costume) to a local bar that has a costume party, pretend to be someone you are not (as we all do here on POF regularly)? >Go out to some local bar that ISN'T having a costume party, and pretend to be someone you are not?
The question is really, what do you do on holidays, major holidays, or minor ones? Do you have family, to share them with, or like me, no family?
I have only one friend locally, actually a past relationship, who lives within a few miles, but she has family...daughter, daughter's BF, grandkids...and they will either have plans, or daughter will be working, and my friend will then be babysitting.
This is not a major thing, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc...it;s a fun holiday, supposedly.
How will you find some fun? Do you have a hot date? A party? Family fun? Stay home alone and make your own fun?
For me, it'll be some beer, some snacks, and watching the Phillies (hopefully) take the third game. And, I'll do it at home, since Halloween on a Saturday night...NO WAY I'll be on the road, not only because I'd like to have a few beers while watching the game, but too many other people will be doing that.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 4:47:30 PM | I'm going out karaoke .. in a witchie costume.
Join the Elks or Moose or VFW or other senior group and go to whatever party they are having. Else, if you like the exclusion of the woods enjoy it. Alone is not lonely. It is a choice. You can be lonely in a crowd and not the least bit lonely when alone.

I'm going out karaoke .. in a witchie costume.
Now that sounds great! Hope you have fun! I would consider something like that, but none within a safe driving distance...besides,,,
Karaoke...Phillies...Karaoke...Phillies...tough choice. Maybe a Karaoke bar that has the game on ! Yep!

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 4:55:36 PM | | Yep, I'm one of those that will be sitting at home tomorrow night as well...probably with a good book and a glass of wine......maybe 2 glasses......ok, 3 at the most! Pretty pathetic, huh? | |

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 4:56:52 PM | I've lived here for 23 years.
Every year I've done the whole "open house trick or treaters welcome".
Big sliding door right in the front - wide open - house all lit up - yadda yadda yadda.
Last year ONE ..... ONE kid. That was a baby with his young mom came to the door. I ate candy for a year and still have some left.
I am going to pass this year. Lights off and just ignore it.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 5:08:10 PM | I'd be watchin' the Phillies win, lol! But for me, Halloween isn't a holiday, and I already did ma duty many long years ago when I had a baby on the day. What does the Universe want from me anyways? Almost all other holidays I'm very fond of, though that doesn't necessarily mean going somewhere with or without someone. Sometimes, just an email with well wishes is enough (especially for the important ones like Arbor Day).
Another possibility is dressing up Snort, and taking pics. . . .

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 5:21:18 PM | No way , off to visit one of the most haunted places in America, the Charleston Dungeons. Leaving tomorrow morning 5 am, arriving sometime before midnight.
Probably going to stick around and play some golf too, but of course that's secondary to the Dungeons, booooohahaha

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 5:54:02 PM | i miss trick-or-treaters! i always loved seeing them looking so cute in their little costumes.
i came down with some horrid plague earlier this week. so i won't be going anywhere.
npr has some good programming planned for the weekend. so sitting home listening to the radio might provide plenty of thought-provoking material for the season. light a few candles, smolder some white sage, sip some warm cider and listen to some timely music. but, above all, stay warm and dry and don't let anyone breathe on you!

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 6:28:44 PM | | Holidays are mostly like any other days. A couple weeks after my husband died, one of my neighbors asked me over for Thanksgiving, then a couple years later I went to a big casino buffet for Thanksgiving with some friends. My family and close friends are far, far away - I'm geographically between everyone. So I make phone calls, send emails, listen to a book, cruise the net. Even if I wanted to go out, there's no place here to go. In some ways, it's a relief, in other ways, it can be lonely if I let it be. | |

OT: I will be handing out treats to the lil neighbourhood kiddies. They are adorable! Then after that? Hmmm.. me thinks some wine and who knows what the devil may bring? OP hun, I hope whatever you do, you have yourself a good time.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 6:38:24 PM | Saturday I will be helping split and stack wood for some friends who need firewood for the winter and then late afternoon will help harvest some vegetables for some folks who are low on food. Last Saturday there was a harvest festival at some friends home where they had a massive BBQ, western band and old fashioned games we did in the 50's as kids. LOVE the fall!!!
And here in the Sierras we don't get tricker treaters like the suburbs near cities. So Saturday night I will probably watch the World Series, and work on some sewing I have as well as see about doing some beeswax candles. I live a simple old fashioned wild mountain lifestyle (laughing).
When it comes to holiday my friends and family tend to live like they did decades ago when it was all about getting together to enjoy good food and good times. And doing simple outdoor activities like walks, hikes, and even picnics in the snow. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because its all about giving thanks.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 6:43:13 PM | Wow, great responses! I really expected this thread to either get deleted, or ignored.
So, us singles can cope with it, spooks and all!
Miss Wooby...I thought about dressing Snort as "Diego", my buddy's fiance's teacup chihuahua, but I can't find a costume to turn a 100 pound bulldog into a chihauhua.
Seriously..I thank you all for your responses...but I guess I was thinking deeper than I was writing.
Back in 1971....to early '80s, I used to look forward to holidays...all of them. Halloween, I'd put an old ugly warthog head that I got at a yard sale, and rig it on a sawhorse to rush at the door when the kids came calling. Cruel, I know, some parents complained...the same parents who painted their kids as vampires with blood drooling out of their mouths.
I guess my big question is to those who have been in a family-type relationship...how different is it now...no family? Living alone?
Do you do Thanksgiving alone? Christmas, or other religious holidays? How about New Year's Eve? I can't remember the last time I was awake at midnight! My band does not play NYE anymore, so...it's just another night.
And you? | |

hmmmm....maybe I'll put on my Alien costume and peek through your windows...scare the crap outta ya while you're watching the game.
For you, Miss Free... I'll leave the lights on and the door unlocked. Forget about peeking thru windows... C'mon in!!! (I'd still be skeered tho, but for different reasons).

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 6:50:44 PM | I'm going to a POF wedding reception which is being held at a POF Halloween party. LOL!

OP hun, I hope whatever you do, you have yourself a good time.
Oh, Miss Moonchild, I will. But the wine an a little influence from the devil himself, as you plan, sounds like a really good plan. Where'd you say you live? I may just come knocking on your door, too..."trick or drink!"

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 7:13:20 PM | ...Well I was all set to go to a "Monster Bash" but.....I somehow got talked into babysitting for my neice. My fault, I hesitated "too long" about not being sure if I wanted to go out tomorrow or not ( still fighting that damn bug) She went in for the kill.......so I guess I'll be handing out candy in my bestest "wicked witch" costume....hee, hee

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/30/2009 7:19:31 PM | Moving in a couple weeks. So, I'll be doing more packing tomorrow, Halloween. Cleaning, sorting, packing. And slowly going crazy 'cos I'm tackling all this basically alone. Guess one is allowed to be crazy on Halloween, so I'm right on track. Come to think of it, it's beginning to look 'spooky' in here. Woooo. Shades of haunted house because I've been covering furniture with sheets after I wash 'em down. (no sense in letting them get all dusty in the couple weeks I've left here) I had a friend ask a couple weeks ago, "why are you beginning cleaning/packing now? you don't move for 4 weeks". Are you kidding??? I'm doing it all from a wheelchair, for goodness sake.
I'd have a light on if there were kids that come around.. but they don't in this area. Good thing too, because I'd probably put them to work. LOL
