Wasn't that kind of the purpose of the whole World Baseball Classic thing? I mean I know it was technically more like a tournament of all star games, but it was still designed to basically see who was best on a global scale.

Unfortunately, most people didn't really seem to care about it. I'm a bit surprised they did it again.

The World Series is a name, not a descriptor.
It dates from a time before peculiar cultural affinities allowed baseball to take root in Japan, Venezuela, Taiwan, etc.
Like the Super Bowl. Doesn't mean every game is super. Or the Olympics. It hasn't been held at Olympia for millenia.

Since MLB has by far the largest and most varied international representation of the 4 US major sports, you could argue that it already is a world series. Almost 30% of players in the bigs and 50% of minor leaguers were born outside the US.

Have a World qualification tournament.
Where domestic or national teams who play the game have to qaulify to participate.
Like the football world cup or Champions League.

Cheers

I am talking about individual city teams from around the world being involved in this.

it would be a great thing to see, but it would extend an already long baseball season!....after playing 164 games plus playoffs, most of the players would not have the energy to start another tournament.........but it would be a great thing to see the MLB (WS) champs playing other Baseball league Champs from other countries in a World tournament...but the problem is that most of the World's best baseball players are all playing in MLB teams!

It would never happen. like sum1reel said the baseball season is already long enough plus the travel cost alone for teams would be a lot of money to fly to country to country around the world to the point where a lot of cities couldn't afford it. Not to mention the enormous jet-lag toll it would take on the players flying across the globe like that ontop of trying to play a game.

The closest thing we have to an actual World Series around the world right now is the Summer Olympics.

There is NOTHING more exciting than watching the Yankees win what Americans call the World Series...it just happened an hour ago and I'm still totally psyched and can't wait for the Canyon of Heroes Parade on Friday. I see where you're coming from, but the Japanese play baseball slightly differently and actually, with players from Japan, Panama, etc. many American teams are international. There is no way the fans would be happy with changing an American institution that is so deeply emotionally embedded in our hearts.

Now if there were another Series that included other countries, well, maybe. Sounds like you're envisioning something like the World Cup Soccer Games. But we don't have a National Team, we have regional teams which speaks to the very heart of what Americans are about.....different parts of the country with their own fans.

The World Series is like mom, apple pie, Da Bronx, the House that Ruth Built...it's a purely American mythology and I wouldn't change it for anything.

I'm not a baseball fan, but that would be cool. It would have an Olympic style pride thing going on. I know you're referring to cities playing cities, but if only one city from each country entered your dream tournament, then it would turn into nation v. nation by default. America would only root for one team regardless of what team it is. It would be easy for us non-fans to just jump on whatever bandwagon is representing the country.

I think Red Sox fans would cheer for any foreign team if it were the Yankees representing America just to be able to say the Yankees let down America.
