| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/2/2009 1:44:07 PM | Hi Fellow Fishers ...
Just stumbled across this news article below regarding POF ... the story, found in the November, 2009 issue of the Western Investor newspaper, reports that the site is hitting big-time!
Plenty of Fish has most hookups
AVancouver non-franchise dating service - Plenty of Fish - is the world's most visited Internet site, according to Internet media metrics giant ComScore Inc. . According to ComScore, daters visited Plenty of Fish's website 76.8 million times in July. That's more than twice as many as the 33.4 million global visits that second-ranked Meetic attracted.
"We've grown [visits] about 80 per cent year-over-year worldwide," 30-year-old Plenty of Fish owner Markus Frind told Business in Vancouver.
"I don't want to talk about revenue, because then I'll just get a whole bunch more competitors."
Frind was more willing to discuss revenue last year when he told BIV that the venture he runs out of his 900-square-foot Coal Harbour apartment generated $10 million in advertising. He has almost no expenses.

He has almost no expenses.
As a veteran of the IT world, this statement is absolute nonsense.
|
| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/2/2009 4:12:48 PM | It's all relative, AE. Even if his total overhead were, say, $1M last year, that's only 10%. That, in private enterprise/entrepreneurial terms, equates to "almost no expenses". I read somewhere that he has no paid staff (Although I am certain he has a private secretary), so in other words, the IT stuff he has is probably contracted out ... that would account for the bulk of his overhead. | |

| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/2/2009 4:50:37 PM | And they want us to pay for that silly gold dot or star or whatever the heck it is?!?!?
Ummm.... ya... ok.... Let me get my credit card out...

4 staff and trust me, the cost to run this kind of infrastructure is monster (ASP, SQL).

Like I said... what... a million per year?
...bandwidth, hardware, software, staff, storage space...staff, taxes...well over that dude.
Why do you think they delete email every 30 days? Or run such a bare bones HTML interface? All of it to minimize costs. If the world of advertising supported dating sites was so lucrative, you'd see a line of folks trying to compete or more likely..someone lined up, cheque book in hand.
And..given the nature of humans, let me ask you something RBG. Wouldn't it strike you as unlikely that someone pulling in 9 million a year would live in a 900 sq foot condo in a rather "average" area of Vancouver?

Well, I don't know the dude, dude, so I can't speak for what his living preferences are, but do you know that his 900sf condo in Vancouver is his only residence? Like you said... given the nature of human beings... I doubt that's the only real estate he owns. The again, maybe Big Fish is a disciple of Harvey MacKay's, who would tell you that living in a 900sf condo in the downtown area of your city and not carrying a mortgage on it is a brilliant thing to do. I have no idea AE, just as I have no idea what the operating costs of a website such as this one are. That's why I asked. I also have no idea what your answers mean. I don't know what HTML is, or bandwidth, or bare bones facial tissue, or anything else that you are asking me about, in regards to this web site. So I don't know what the costs are.

| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/4/2009 10:26:02 AM | This is from a blog byKevin Burton:
Google Adsense millionaire Markus Frind, founder of PlentyofFish was a database and web developer who graduated from college in 1999 with a diploma in computer science. This was also the time of the dot-com meltdown. Jumping from job-to-job, Markus began developing a home-grown site to help himself learn ASP.net. Rather than buy a book, he learned by adding new functions and features to the site. He also started experimenting with search engine optimization (SEO) strategies and incorporating them into the site. Gradually, it morphed quite unintentionally into an online dating center. The site has continued growing astronomically ever since and is now the No. 1 free online dating site in the world, averaging 8 million unique visitors per month. His bank account has grown fatter as well thanks to the Google ads he runs on the site. He has also garnered international attention, including being featured in the Wall Street Journal and on the Today Show.
Markus indicated on this site he bought a couple new servers last year, his revenue is from the ads that you see on every page of the site, 3 years ago it was just under $ 1 000 000.00 a month, there are a lot more ads on the site now, and since there is an increase in membership, his earnings are no doubt proportionately increased.
Nothing wrong with the way he has made his niche in the dating world, most of us like the fact the site is 100% free to use and comment in, sometimes we even luck out and meet someone that stirs the embers and gets the fires going again.
Wish I had had his talent and perseverence 7 years ago!

| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/4/2009 2:49:50 PM | | I like how if you don't write a long enough post it wont get posted. I also like how I was banned from posting for a week because I used some periods to fill out my post. Then a photo was taken off my profile because it didn't have my face in it, even though it had my face clearly shown. Haha. Good for the fish. I think that it is great that he has made some cash. I just think he needs to pull in his moderators a bit. | |

Nice. I don't want you to know, but if I told you, you'd be VERY impressed.
Well, I know what I'm doing tonight.

That means nothing. The richest man in the world still lives in the same house he bought in the 50's......

Uhh surely you do know that it isnt the ads that are lucrative, it's the hits that are. Which this website has tons!
He isnt even hosting this website himself anymore, do a whois, tracert and what have you. So all those costs that you mentioned? Nahhh he doesnt, he pay those guys at Peer1 to host and do his work now for him.
A million? lol....probably even less than that. This isnt a MMO cluster farm or something like that.

According to Forbes, for this year it's Bill Gates. And so the above statement is actually false... But I hear ya. In keeping with what you said, yes, rich people (the ones who weren't handed the wealth without working hard for it) do tend to be rich for a reason - not spending money on a lot of unnecessary items.
|
| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/7/2009 10:49:17 AM | | Sen is talkinag about Warren Buffet. Yeah, he is deff a wealthy man. And yes he does live in the same small house he bought in the 50's. But he hasn't been the richest man in the US for quite some time. Tcpl is right too. The self made rich do tend to not spend money on unnecessary items. You don't hear about T. Boone Pickens buying a lambo and putting spinning rims on it. | |

LOL...what a kick ass idea for Pimp My Ride. T Boone, parked out from of Earls on 4th, hydraulics maxed out to Joe Budden's - Pump it Up.
Dudes on my Facebook, maybe I'll mail him. That's how ya get the kids into wind power.
|
| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/7/2009 11:16:59 AM | | Maybe even better would be to pimp out a west Texas windmill. I am thinking 3000 watts of power bumping 4 15 inch subs. I bet we could put 1000 LCDs on one of those bad boys. And the best part is that it could power itself. But seeing as how West Texas gets pretty hot in the summer, we might want to thing about a snowcone machine in the base. | |

| 76.8 Million Hits .... Posted: 11/7/2009 7:24:16 PM | The only reason Buffet isnt is because he gave a huge chunk of his fortune away. Heck the guy wouldnt even lend his own daughter money for her to buy herself a house. Apparently he also like burgers and fries more than caviar.
It's entirely possible that Markus is of the same mindset that he doesnt have to flaunt it to enjoy it.
