Any chance of the option 'single, but not looking'?
Posted: 11/3/2009 10:22:23 AM
Several of my site buddies have mentioned the restrictions on the 'relationship' status, and the lack of this particular option receives more 'complaints' than anything.

It is quite possible to be both 'single' and 'not looking' for anything at the present time, or indeed, ever! Some of us wait until 'romance' falls from the sky, and consider that actively 'looking' for 'romance' smacks of desperation. but the site only allows those people to state that they are 'not single', which implies that the reason that they're not looking for 'romance' is because they already have one.

So, is there any chance of the site allowing us to have the option "single, but not looking" ?

It would be a good idea, and I'll say this over and over:

A profile has two fields:

  1. your current Marital status

  2. what you are seeking from this site

Pretty simple , no?

Hence I fail to understand why one field has to be used as double duty - it's simply bad programming standards.

All this can be easily fixed to cover the people who are here ONLY for the forums and any other permutation.

Make the NOT LOOKING option as part of the Seeking selections.
Make the NOT SINGLE on its own, as a choice under Marital Status

Then, if you want participate in the forums , you can still do so under the guise of looking for whatever you want, or simply not looking.

This of course would entail, changing the matching and searching logic – obviously a place where a programming nightmare may ensue due to taking the easy way out when not single not looking was first introduced.

If someone is labeled SINGLE and NOT LOOKING, then clicking their profile is a waste of time isn't it? I think if we did have that option, it should automatically put your profile into hidden mode since 99% of the people who come to this site are NOT looking for single people who are NOT looking.

Not at all!

As it says both in the OP and on my profile, I'm not 'looking' for romance, as I prefer it to just 'happen', and many of my friends feel the same way. True, the 'single' status' might be accurate, but it implies that we are 'on the market', so to speak, and willing to accept approaches from those who ARE actively looking for romance.

Besides, do you really expect to find a profile containing your ideal woman each time you click on a pic? We 'waste' thousands of clicks each week.

Those of us who are single and not wishing to embark on a relationship at the moment are not being catered for by the site options.

99% of the people who come to this site are NOT looking for single people who are NOT looking.

So, why not let the remaining 1% have their option, and leave the rest of you to it? After all, this is a dating and chat site, which given the absence of a 'chat-room', obviously refers to the PMs which some of us send to our friends.

@ Trappy.

Excellent thoughts there.....do I email Markus, or do you?

It is quite possible to be both 'single' and 'not looking' for anything at the present time, or indeed, ever!

The "Right Slash" in "Not Single/Not Looking" means: 'Either' or 'Both', without giving any further Information.

One Setting for both Items as they function the same Way in Terms of the Searches, and that is why they are combined. You can add further Explanation to the "About Me" Form Field of your Profile.

If you are "Not Looking", then you are out of the Searches.

And then in the "I Am Looking for" Field of your Profile, select either "Talk/E-Mail" or "Friends".

In this Fashion you pretty much affect the same Thing in Terms of the various Site Search Features.

You can always reset these Settings should decide to change your Mind. It's not cast in Stone.

I'm not 'looking' for romance, as I prefer it to just 'happen',

That would be considered "Dating" without qualifying any Timeframes, and would be a good Way of making that "Happen". This Type of Info does not need to be added as a Search Parameter, it's "About Me" Data.

Ah !

Not one person I've discussed this with guessed that to be so. We all took it to mean "I am not single and therefore I am not looking for a serious relationship with anyone else at present", which is why so many of us have the 'friends' search option.

The trouble is, although the site might have intended its meaning, how many site members thought the same as what we did? After all, some of us have noticed the number of enquiries from strangers rising after changing to that status. Clearly, it has caused confusion.

Yes, taking out friends of the opposing gender IS an excellent way of encouraging a romance to happen, but I don't consider it to be 'dating' until that ( or 'exclusivity' ) occurs. I take several of my female friends out, but none of them have have indicated that they consider that we are 'dating', and I certainly don't.

I take your points, though, and thanks for taking the trouble.

We learned that in Grade 7. Takes but a Minute to consult various Online Dictionaries. If you don't know what something means, then look it up.

Also called "Forward Slash":an oblique stroke (/) in print or writing, used between alternatives (e.g., and/or), in fractions (e.g., 3/4), in ratios (e.g., miles/day), or between separate elements of a text.

I don't consider it to be 'dating' until that ( or 'exclusivity' ) occurs.

Yes, but we cannot create endless Search Qualifications catering to Thousands of different individual Dating Preferences when they would function the same Way as the existing ones do.
