i have an intel Q6600 quad core processor on an msi p45 platinum motherboard. For the last 8 months i've had it running at 333 x 9 , a nice 3 Ghz . Tonight i decided to push it a little further and upped it to 400 x 8 which is 3.2 Ghz and an fsb of 1600. The thing is ive never upped the voltage on the processor and its now running at 3.2 Ghz 1600 fsb and the idle temperature is only 15 degrees C. i ran a stress test on all cores and it passed without any errors, the maximum temperature the cores reached under 10 threads full stress was 31 degrees C on air cooling!

Surely this cant be right? is my msi monitoring software reporting incorrect temperatures? does anyone know of a more reliable and accurate software for reading the cpu temperature please? i dont want to burn my cpu out because of faulty software

Check the Bios and see what the temps are saying in there. Make sure SpeedStep is turned off so that the processor can run at full speed when you are checking the temps in the Bios. I don't trust software temp apps because they have been known to be inaccurate and in some cases highly inaccurate.

I don't think you can damage your cpu if you do not increase core voltage. IF it gets too hot then it will shut off but that cpu can take more oc than that.

sounds cold.... idle at 15C.???

what is your ambient room temp there?.... surely a chip will run hotter than ambient temp at a minimum?..

just looking at my pc temps.... E7200/G31.... stock settings in bios...

idling closer to 40C... at 26C room temp... which seems a bit warm, but norma-lish... ie cpu cooling fins only warm to touch..

I'd be concerned with too low a figure and too hot a figure....

have you tried CPUID HW monitor?...

thanks for the advice, the bios reported both the cpu temp and the system temp at 20 degrees C. i'm more confident now to keep the overclock as it is

(edit) thanks also, i'll get cpuid now and check. yes i know they seem really low but they are the actual temperatures. ive heard of golden sample cpu's before. maybe ive just got lucky and have bought one . i do have a zalman tunnel flower cpu cooler though

(edit 2) cpuid shows core speed 3213.3 MHz, multiplier x 8, bus speed 401.7, fsb 1606.6 MHz. no indication of temp though

I would raise RAM voltage and north bridge a few points before upping the cpu volts, if need be.... ( if the stock V was an unstable OC)

your rig seems to be OCing ok without V adjustments... and stable... so the board/hware is going ok.. and isn't looking for more juice...

more V will heat the cpu up more...

my chip is using 1.12v atm.... the box says 1.25V is their max... I'm sure some have driven more V into them...

That temp is unlikely.

Get syssoft Sandra and recheck the temps.

That level of OC on that chip isnt that great, but that OC with that temp is...
Of course it all depends on your cooler.
