| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/3/2009 9:19:00 PM | My compter won't turn on. At all. It's dead.
It did come on randomly a couple of times since it died for no reason I could see.
The light on the back where the power source is does not come on. I unplugged the power source from all the internal components and it still did not come on, the power source. I then unplugged the power source from the CPU and it came on!
Then I turned it off and tried to turn it back on and it was again dead. Plugged it back into the CPU and it was still dead this time.
Any suggestions on what this might be?

| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/5/2009 7:23:33 AM | | incorrect. with no ram a system would power up..but the bios would beep at you letting you know theres a problem. the same goes for most vitals except cpu...which the bios needs to run. it sounds like a failed power supply...if not that, its a motherboard issue...maybe something is shorted and throwing the thing in to protection mode | |

| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/5/2009 10:25:02 AM | A guy at Best Buy Geek Squad looked at the motherboard and said that is what it was.
The little things that stick up, little round cylinders on the motherboard were all corroded on top and were sort of enlarged--they look like miniature batteries on end and the top ends were swollen and all corroded. He said from that he could tell it was a bad CPU.
I took out the hard drive and now have to find a case for it so I can plug it into my new Windows 7 machine and hope to retrieve all programs and photos, itunes, etc. off of it.

| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/5/2009 11:53:17 AM | | What you describe is bad capacitors on the motherboard. Repairing it is not cost effective. The CPU itself is probably still good but sounds like you've already bought a new PC. I hope you didn't throw out the old PC. Everything except the motherboard is still usable. | |

| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/5/2009 2:34:02 PM | | That's the first thing i check is the power supply going out and then if it still doesn't work i check the motherboard. More times then not if your pc doesnt' turn on the most common cause is a power supply issues followed by a motherboard issue. Many namebrand pc companies throw in cheap power supplies and those are normally the first thing to go on a pc in a couple of years of use. | |

OP...this wouldn't happen to be an old Dell system would it? Perhaps even a GX series specifically?

| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/9/2009 12:20:46 PM | | capictator plague. these things are somewhat like miniature batteries. they maintain a bit of charge so the line theyre attached to maintains voltage. computers are noisy places..these things help filter out the noise when they go bad your system stability drops since the voltage to cpu and other sections is no longer stable and can drop below operating voltage. while most of these things have been erradicated...many still exist. there was no way to fix that motherboard..its trashed. | |

| HELP! Computer won't turn on at all.... Posted: 11/9/2009 6:14:15 PM | There are power supply testers. $5-15 or so. Office Depot.
I had a similar experience with yours.
Either the power supply died or cpu.

Make sure your RAM card/s are pluged in all the way... no ram no computer.
That's not entirely true. With an unseated RAM card the computer will still power on and off. You'll hear some beeping coming from within the case and the monitor won't "light up" - but again you'll hear the fans kicking on and the power supply "coming to life."
