Christmas Dinner

Now I love my Christmas Dinner, sit down eat till you cant move, when you can move again eat some more, I fast Boxing Day just so I can proper pig out.
But my god I cant stand Turkey its not even a pleasent meat IMO, Id much rather have a gorgeous piece of Lamb or Beef, Im happy to have Duck but please dont let my step mom cook a Turkey again (last year she left the Giblets in, the Giblets were inside a plastic wrapper!).

Does anybody look forward to the yearly Turkey or after years of the same do wish for something different for Christmas Dinner, what would you choose if Turkey became inexplicably exctint?

Call yourself a cook?

Granted turkey may not rank with other cuts of meat, but a decent meal can be crafted with a little care.

Mind you, I always have lamb or goose.

If I had been cooking the Giblets would of been in the stock long before that Turkey saw an oven

I agree, turkey isn't the most exciting meat you can have.

But... what makes it are all the trimmings. The sausages wrapped in bacon, cranberry sauce, home made stuffing and lashings of my mum's lovely gravy.

Yum.... I could eat it now!

I don't like turkey much either, it doesn't taste of much and its pretty dry meat. Duck is nice but much prefer to get a chicken from the butchers already stuffed with their homemade stuffing. I did that last year and it was absolutely gorgeous.

I really don't like spending the majority of Christmas Day in the kitchen, I'd much rather be spending that time with my children, trying to extricate small fiddly plastic toys from sharp plastic packaging

Duck and lamb are my favourites ATM....... but as another poster mentioned, if someone else is dishing up you can make it enjoyable with other tasty tit-bits like pigs-in-blankets, roast potatoes and a good splodge of Chop sauce!!

Just turkey is indeed not very exciting, but I love it at Christmas because it is traditional and always feel somewhat cheated if it is not on the menu!

I love it with all the trimmings, and so many that you basically burst when you've finished eating!

I like all meats, as long as it comes with lots of trimmings.

Turkey is fantastic if it is done right, it doesn't have to be dry and tasteless. I love a traditional Christmas dinner, turkey, roasties, kilted sausages, veg (no sprouts eeeeew) stuffing and lashings of thick gravy mmmmmm can't wait. Best of all every year my Grandad takes us all out to a restaurant so there is no cooking and no dishes, ahhhh bliss. Best Christmas pressie ever.

I will be getting up at 5.30 am tomorrow to put the turkey in the oven and force feeding it to distant relatives until the end of Jan 2010. Thereby ensuring peace from uninvited guests until christmas 2011 and free reheeling in turkey skin for all my stilletoes for the duration.

Hi Gily bring on the meat, but can I swop the sherry for a nice cup of coffee (Irish) could we sell sprouts as a military deterrant............. or is that just for first dates?

I have settled for steak and chips for me and my lad this year. We usually land on some unsuspecting family for din dins on Christmas day. I used to cook it every year up until five years ago. This year we've decided to go bah and hum bug and stay at home, slob out and watch movies all day with an easy meal in front of us!

Having been one of those vegetarian folk since I was 14 (1977), and a vegan for 5 years, I only vaguely remember the cardboard like quality of the aforementioned Turkey. And not even decent cardboard at that, a dry flavourless bland brown piece of cardboard, that has been left out in the back yard for a good 6 months, and been sat on by next door neighbours cat.
Last year I had a gorgeous Lentil and Spinach curry, with all the trimmings, nan bread, pakoras, onion bhajiis, vegetable rice, poppadoms, and a rather fruity little tamarind dip.
And not a bloody Brussel Sprout to be seen. Satan's food!

Oh Chopper - don't know why but I thought you were a chef or a cook or something! Your dinner sounds horrible!! I tend to have an easier time at Xmas now and buy more stuff in ready prepared!! I was soooo against it at one time, but it is so easy now - and I use all foil containers for my roasties etc & so hardly any washing up! Roll on Xmas!!

Having not eaten meat since '84 and not had to pretend I enjoyed cooking a Christmas dinner for 'him indoors' since '98 I love NOT doing Christmas dinner

I fill the fridge with goodies and champagne, exchange and don the Christmas pyjamas with my daughter on Christmas Eve, lock the door and we graze until the day after Boxing Day We eat what we want , when we want and if we want, and never answer the door
